Friend not accepting she’s NOT doing 28,000 steps per day

Just can’t convince her! Showed her that her app is picking up arm movement ..got her to move her arm whilst seated 😳 but she still insists she’s nearly up to 30,000 every day!

Just read on here that someone is doing 10,000 steps per day but this is really hard to achieve!

How do people squeeze it in alongside work/parenting/household stuff? I manage 5,000 steps in an active role ..nowhere near the recommended 🤨

I gave up on my Fitbit when on a coach journey it racked up 16k.

Superhansrantowindsor · 17/05/2025 18:16

I’ve had a walk around the garden centre and pottered in the garden for two hours. I’ve done 45mins on my walking pad and my phone says I’ve done 6k. I think 28k just with a short walk and pottering is nonsense.

Widgetsmum · 17/05/2025 18:18

Different watches have different sensitivities. A garmin wont pick up much movement from day clapping or knitting but my old Fitbit did. I can’t register steps pushing a buggy or trolley unless 1 handed with my Garmin. They also need setting to stride length. I’m a dog walker and get approx 2000 steps per mile. When running it can be a few more if I’ve shortened my stride. Wearing it loose may also have an effect esp on ones for lifestyle rather than sports.

Pickingmyselfup · 17/05/2025 18:29

On a workday especially if I've walked the kids to school instead of driving some of the way I easily do 20,000. A mile each way to school is 4 miles total and then I'm on my feet walking up and down from 9.15-2.45.

Then add in the pottering around the house, walk to the shop if I need to, extra steps when I go for a run.

Last Friday I finished the day on 46,000 but that was made up of the school run, work, general pottering then a 21.8km run. Tomorrow I doubt I'll hit 5,000, I'm not running, not walking anywhere particularly far and have no intention of going on a mad cleaning spree which can add some steps in.

My Garmin does seem pretty accurate for steps and the fact mine are either insanely high or insanely low does tie in with my lifestyle but I don't think general pottering around will hit 28,000 on a daily basis.

OhMyMirror · 17/05/2025 18:43

I averaged 26k a day when I was at Disneyland. That's running about after 3 kids in the parks for about 10 hours

Dogsbreath7 · 17/05/2025 18:55

i can do 5000 steps just walking between office and kitchen (I have tea in my veins).

Ilovelowry · 17/05/2025 17:52

But if you are not the same height as your husband, your strides will be different.

We are the same height 👍🏻

Dogsbreath7 · 17/05/2025 18:58

If I do a10k walk plus pottering I am usually 18k steps (Apple Watch/ phone)

TessTackle · 17/05/2025 19:24

To be fair I average 30,000 but I do workout for an hour before work and I teach too.

If I teach all day, up and down floors and do duty, then do a 5k run, I can possibly get to 12k in a day.

My final total for today: 6,609.
1 hour in gym. But I guess high knees and burpees won't count. Nor weights.
In and out of supermarket.
Walk to the ice cream van.
Pottering in the garden.
Watering the garden.
All I intend doing now is kitchen and back.

In all fairness, I wear mine on my ankle which the kids find hilarious (secondary) and I’m a PE teacher so V active

I am on 33,000 steps at the moment BUT I have done a 20km run-walk, walked another kilometre up the hill home and spent the afternoon pottering in the garden. There is no way your friend is doing 28,000 steps without significant exertion!

My daily average this year is 13,715 - which takes significant effort for me to achieve with a desk job. I do a 3-4km walk most lunch breaks in the week, run around 5-6k twice a week after work, and do another longer run at the weekend. On the days I don’t run after work I tend to only hit 8,000 or 9,000 steps.

DinoLil · 17/05/2025 20:19

A friend of mine and her friend both got fitbits at the same time and got really competitive with steps. Both of them would open and shut a drawer or wave their arm backwards and forwards if their 'steps' were on the low side 😆

Ladyingreen999 · 17/05/2025 20:34

Tell her to go for a walk and compare with the number of steps on her phone. They're more accurate (but you have to have your phone in your bag or pocket).

NevaMama · 17/05/2025 20:46

Love that!!

Puddingpiper · 17/05/2025 20:47

Tell her to put it on her ankle or laces then it will record actual steps

Changednamesorry · 17/05/2025 22:50

I average about 55000 steps a week and I don't do much walking at weekends. But mon-Friday I do the school run usually on foot which is about 3 miles in total and I walk a lot in my line of work as don't know how to drive.

So 28000 a day sounds pretty unlikely.

The ‘recommended’ 10,000 steps a day isn’t necessary. It was a marketing campaign to sell a pedometer.

Yes. But equally if you do 10000 steps a day you’re more active than someone who does 2000 steps a day, and being active is a good thing. So it’s a fairly decent target to aim for, if you can.

Sadworld23 · 18/05/2025 00:00

Imo accuracy is irrelevant. You know if you've had a tough day's activity and if stepcounter reads X then you compare it with days when it reads X- today. So X is your target, and
If you get more than X fab, and less than X, we'll maybe you could try a bit harder,. The actual numbers mean nothing.

mathanxiety · 18/05/2025 01:39

intrepidpanda · 16/05/2025 16:10

What does it matter? Surely movement is movement whether it is your arms or legs. Are you saying wheelchair sports people are inactive because it's not an actual step?

You seem a bit overinvested in what she does or doesn't do.

Agree

Agree to an extent. Until people start comparing. The people who reckon they do 5k while still in bed and 10k pottering round the house are likely to be seriously overestimating their activity levels. But within a reasonable range it doesn’t matter that much.

Doesn’t matter how many steps you do- keep active and have exercise that makes you out of breath. We easily manage 10 to 12k without trying. Just look at bedtime out of curiosity. .

Rumbley · 18/05/2025 08:03

i just can’t imagine getting together with a friend and actively trying to prove them wrong about something like their step count.

Sorbetto · 18/05/2025 09:28

ChoppyChoppy · 16/05/2025 16:06

Lots are very accurate. My pals and I sometimes compare ours after we’ve done a long hike and they are often almost exactly the same and the readings also tie in with the route length if we are using a walking app.

What do you and your friends use I’m interested in getting one but accuracy is such a big factor
