Friend not accepting she’s NOT doing 28,000 steps per day

Just can’t convince her! Showed her that her app is picking up arm movement ..got her to move her arm whilst seated 😳 but she still insists she’s nearly up to 30,000 every day!

Just read on here that someone is doing 10,000 steps per day but this is really hard to achieve!

How do people squeeze it in alongside work/parenting/household stuff? I manage 5,000 steps in an active role ..nowhere near the recommended 🤨

5000 is very low for an active role?

lunaswand · 16/05/2025 16:00

I do 5000 a day in a very sedentary role but 28,000 is a lot

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 16/05/2025 16:03

The weird thing is that the other day I did a 5km run and a 2km walk to cool down and the same watch that recorded both of those things told me I had taken zero steps that day.

They're clearly very inaccurate.

tealandteal · 16/05/2025 16:03

Maybe you both have inaccuracies? I usually do 10,000 and my work is quite sedentary. By the time I have run around after he kids and done a couple of very gentle dogs walks I do 10,000. 28,000 would be an on your feet all day type of number. Does her job involves walking around all day? Or is she running for an hour or two after work?

myrtleWilson · 16/05/2025 16:04

I liked the day my app said I'd taken one step - I would have imagined I'd notice if I stood up out of bed, took a step and didn't move for the rest of the day - but hey ho!

Dunnocantthinkofone · 16/05/2025 16:04

10,000 really isn’t all that hard if you are moderately active.
An hours dog walk plus everyday activities works for me.

28,000 however would not imo be possible without several hours exercise a day…..although my watch doesn’t pick up and count random arm movements 🤷‍♀️

Oilofeveningprimrose · 16/05/2025 16:05

It roughly takes about 1.5 hours of brisk walking to do 10k steps.

Lots are very accurate. My pals and I sometimes compare ours after we’ve done a long hike and they are often almost exactly the same and the readings also tie in with the route length if we are using a walking app.

Dreichweather · 16/05/2025 16:06

I do between 15 and 21k but I don’t work. School run is 3k so that can easily be 9k a day for me. By the time it gets to 5 pm I have normally only sat down for 30 mins.

Nursemumma92 · 16/05/2025 16:07

I do about 18000 steps in a 12 hour shift at work some days- 28000 sounds far too many!

Funnyduck60 · 16/05/2025 16:09

I do 14000 steps a day as a carer in a large care home during an 11 hour shift.

Bodonka · 16/05/2025 16:09

I used to regularly get 15-18k a day in a active role, now I’m WFH I get 12k but I do the school run at least once a day and will pull out the walking pad in the evening if I haven’t hit it. I’ll only reach 25k+ if I’m travelling/big day out somewhere.

This made me chuckle! 🤣

I do a sit down job but I still manage to average 5000 a day, just with kids, cleaning up etc.

CyclingAddict · 16/05/2025 16:09

She’s on her feet most of the day but in a smallish space
has a nap when she gets home
no running half marathons or anything

my active role is a three hour shift (I do other (sedentary work))

10,000 is hard! I walk most evenings for about 45 mins and probably only clock up 2,000 or so

I sometimes do 28000 but am knackered at the end of the day!

I usually do 15,000 though without much effort (a dog walk and a walk to the gym and back), so 5,000 seems very low to me.

FLOWER19833 · 16/05/2025 16:10

If she has a job that requires her to walk a lot its possible, i do roughly 20-24k but that is a few hours walking every day, my legs hurt every evening

picturegardengift · 16/05/2025 16:10

In an 8 hour shift i can do 26k steps, samsung estimates that as about 12miles. I work in a warehouse constantly walking and a steady pace. Thats not including what i do around the house ect as i rarely have my phone in the pocket, so 28k isnt impossible but you would spend a big portion of your day walking.

intrepidpanda · 16/05/2025 16:10

What does it matter? Surely movement is movement whether it is your arms or legs. Are you saying wheelchair sports people are inactive because it's not an actual step?

You seem a bit overinvested in what she does or doesn't do.

MagentaRocks · 16/05/2025 16:11

I regularly do over 10k steps a day but a normal day with no gym or long dog walk can be as low as 6.5k. Even on the days when I go to the gym and do a very long dog walk I don’t get past 20k steps

PandaCwtch · 16/05/2025 16:11

I average 18000 to 25000 a day. I get 6-10k in the morning either running or walking the dogs, and another 6-10k walking them in the evening (this is about 5-8km of walking). The rest is from walking around the house, standing/shuffling at my desk. You'd really know about it you were managing 28k every day.

JohnofWessex · 16/05/2025 16:11

28000 steps, I assume she's some sort of Navvy who only uses a pick and shovel

Fimofriend · 16/05/2025 16:13

My Fitbit doesn't record all my steps. It doesn't record if I move about in a small space like a toilet or a small kitchen. It doesn't record the steps I did whilst dancing.

OutragedAardvark · 16/05/2025 16:13

I average 10k at work and a further 5k walking to work and back. I view myself as quite lazy and otherwise avoid exercise. I can imagine it wouldn't be too hard to get to mid 20s if I enjoyed the gym and an evening stroll too. Perhaps not, if you've already caught out her pedometer though... What's her day like?

I think you are under-recording, unless you walk very slowly. I'd expect to walk 1km in 10-15 min. Unless you have incredibly long legs, you won't cover 1m per stride, so you'd expect to be more than 1000 steps per km. A very easy 45 min walk should be 3000+ steps.

EndlesslyDecluttering · 16/05/2025 16:16

Does she crochet or knit? I discovered that I was clocking up a huge amount of steps sitting on the sofa crocheting.

For me 5000 is a day when I don't do much other than go to (sedentary) work in the car or potter around the shops. 10000 is more usual. Wouldn't hit 28k unless it was walking most of the day.
