Friend not accepting she’s NOT doing 28,000 steps per day

Just can’t convince her! Showed her that her app is picking up arm movement ..got her to move her arm whilst seated 😳 but she still insists she’s nearly up to 30,000 every day!

Just read on here that someone is doing 10,000 steps per day but this is really hard to achieve!

How do people squeeze it in alongside work/parenting/household stuff? I manage 5,000 steps in an active role ..nowhere near the recommended 🤨

She’s on her feet most of the day but in a smallish space
has a nap when she gets home
no running half marathons or anything

my active role is a three hour shift (I do other (sedentary work))

10,000 is hard! I walk most evenings for about 45 mins and probably only clock up 2,000 or so

I used to do 28k on a really busy day with royal mail back in lockdown. Constant walking from 8am til 3/4pm
And i mean constant.
2k in 45 mins walking doesn't sound right either though

I’ve sat at my desk nearly all day today, did about 30 mins house work this morning but haven’t been out anywhere and I’ve done 5379. I have an oura and it’s v accurate.

You must fly around the house to do 5k steps in half an hour! That's how many steps I do in a 30min run!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 16/05/2025 17:45

10,000 is absolutely not hard! you do that in one hour.

IdiottoGoa · 16/05/2025 17:45

I’m sure this post has been done before, almost word for word

Worldwide2 · 16/05/2025 17:47

But honestly why does it matter anyway? It doesn't affect your life wether she doss 5000 steps or 50 billion?

Rumbley · 16/05/2025 17:49

What a lovely friend you sound OP

Desperately trying to prove your friend she’s wrong

PyongyangKipperbang · 16/05/2025 17:50

I can do up to 30,000 a day if I am at work and its a hot day. We have a very large garden (hospitality) and if I am in and out all day then 30,000 is doable but I am EXHAUSTED at the end of that. Had similar today, about 20,000 and feel like I can barely walk.

She would need to be constantly on her feet all day (as I am!) to hit that level. Its quite easy to fool those things. We have a joke at work that when anyone hits a high step count, they must have had two wanks that day!

@Mylegishangingoff Ha! It’s also a days worth of trips up and down three flights of stairs to make tea, lunch, more tea etc!

You're going wrong somewhere! I do 2,000 steps in 20 minutes. How slow are you walking?

treesandsun · 16/05/2025 17:56

I used to do 10,000 steps before midday when I walked t work which wasn't all that far and then having to go round the building and up and down some stairs.

10k is not hard but I don't believe your friend is doing anywhere near 28k if she's not doing a lot of exercise. I run 3/4 times a week (between 4miles and 7miles a time (slowly building to a half marathon). I have a desk job so not active at work. Walk to and from school so thats nearly 40mins walk 5 days a week. I don't bother tracking my steps I'm not that obsessive I just wear my sports watch for running and take it off after. I've just checked my watch so 4.5mile run is nearly 9k steps. So if you are walking 45 mins you should be getting way more steps that 2000! It should be more like 6000 that with school runs and general moving around 10k is quite easy to hit. I think your watch is broken!

faerietales · 16/05/2025 17:57

Double post.

MaggieBsBoat · 16/05/2025 17:58

My last marathon was about that. So it’s basically impossible if she’s just doing general activity I reckon on a daily basis.

faerietales · 16/05/2025 17:59

I do about 20-25k steps a day as a dog walker - that’s over approximately 4/5 hours of walking but not an especially fast pace as it’s a lot of stopping and starting, taking photos, waiting for sniffing etc.

Loub1987 · 16/05/2025 18:03

I once did about 29000, I did a walking half marathon that day.

I don’t suppose it matters if she thinks she’s doing that many though. Leave her to it.

5,000 is VERY low for an active role. I get over 10k a day in an office job (and it is not capturing arm movements).

The days when I work from home and don’t go to the gym I do about 5k per day (I try and do a lunchtime walk.)

KvotheTheBloodless · 16/05/2025 18:08

I average about 25,000 in a sedentary role but run a lot, at least 70km per week. There's no way your friend does 28,000 unless she's on her feet all day and either runs or walks long distances too.

MatildaMovesMountains · 16/05/2025 18:09

If I chew my fish and chips extra hard, I can get up to 600 steps in on a Friday 😅

CyclingAddict · 16/05/2025 18:12

I only gently mentioned it once to my friend and she sort of realised what was happening but then went back to telling me every time I see her that she’s doing 28,000 steps a day 😅 I just smile/nod

she uses it as a green light to eat lots of unhealthy food and has worrying health issues

there’s lots of disparities on here between different types of apps/watches and peoples’ beliefs which of course doesn’t matter as long as we’re all fit and happy

The only time I've ever done around that (30k) was after a whole day at Disneyland Paris!!

leave her alone

you feel a bit sheepish about your paltry step count and trying to prove your friend WRONG is not going to change that

HornungTheHelpful · 16/05/2025 18:15

I have a desk job but will hit 10,000 if I walk the dogs a couple of times. The lady who runs the livery yard where I keep my horse - so on her feet all day when not on a horse averages about 23,000. She’ll walk her dogs twice too. So unless she is exercise mad/has a very active job inaccuracy seems probable

LurcherMumma · 16/05/2025 18:18

I manage 10 - 15 k on most active days. However I do most of my walking and running with my toddler in the running buggy and only recently found out that it doesn't record all my steps with my arm on the buggy 😭

EatingHealthy · 16/05/2025 18:19

You're either walking very slowly or your device is not counting all your steps. If I'm deliberately going out for a walk I can do 10,000 steps in under an hour and a half. So 2000 in 45mins is very low.

On an average day in the office I get to over 10,000 steps quite easily (half an hour walk each way to the station and back, plus all the other normal day's walking like going out for a sandwich, walking between meetings, walking around the house etc).

That said you're right 28,000 is high, though it's also high just from arm movements so she must in some way be moving around quite a lot to rack it up whether it's steps or cleaning etc

Golidlocksandthethreeswears · 16/05/2025 18:19

The most I've done in a day is 82,000 steps (and 75,000 the day before). I was literally walking for 24* hours. Whilst 28,000 isn't out of the realm of possibility, it's unlikely unless she's very active. I suspect that's about what my dog walker does in a day, literally walking for 6+ hours daily.

*official chip time 23 hours and 50 minutes 😁
