Friend not accepting she’s NOT doing 28,000 steps per day

Just can’t convince her! Showed her that her app is picking up arm movement ..got her to move her arm whilst seated 😳 but she still insists she’s nearly up to 30,000 every day!

Just read on here that someone is doing 10,000 steps per day but this is really hard to achieve!

How do people squeeze it in alongside work/parenting/household stuff? I manage 5,000 steps in an active role ..nowhere near the recommended 🤨

I do about 7,000 in a daily walk of about 1hr 20mins then the rest of the day just takes me up to 9 or 10 thousand. If I don't do that concentrated walk, I don't get there.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 16/05/2025 16:40

5,000 steps is not very active at all…I’ll do almost that just pottering round the house and garden! I work on the basis that 10 minutes brisk walking is around 1,000 steps, which is 6,000 steps an hour. I’m usually at between 12,000 and 14,000 steps a day because I try do an hour and a half’s walking a day which, with the pottering around, gets me to those numbers!

28,000 steps would be a day when I’ve done a 4 hour walk on top of the potterimg. That’s not very frequently…though I did do that one day last weekend!! I agree with a PP; 45 minutes walking should be way more than 2,000 steps - double it I reckon.

mrshedgesparrow · 16/05/2025 16:41

I get 4000 a day working from home and doing housework, with a quick walk at lunch. 10,000 isn’t hard at all, it’s 3 laps of our dog field.

What does it matter? Surely movement is movement whether it is your arms or legs. Are you saying wheelchair sports people are inactive because it's not an actual step?

You seem a bit overinvested in what she does or doesn't do.

if it’s picking up your arms waving around as you talk (Italian style) then no its not the same as actual movement.

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 16/05/2025 16:44

A postie on a six hour shift will generally do 24,000.

She’s on her feet most of the day but in a smallish space
has a nap when she gets home
no running half marathons or anything

my active role is a three hour shift (I do other (sedentary work))

10,000 is hard! I walk most evenings for about 45 mins and probably only clock up 2,000 or so

Your watch isn't accurate

ThatCyanCat · 16/05/2025 16:45

Just using this as an opportunity to share a story I love about a woman whose abusive husband was checking her pedometer (remember those?) every day as a control strategy, so she attached it to the dog as she made preparations to leave him.

godmum56 · 16/05/2025 16:45

why do you care?

Yep you’re the issue here. I work in relatively active role, if I clear 15000 steps that’s a low movement day.

But also why do you care?

5,000 btw is practically stationery for the day.

Digdongdoo · 16/05/2025 16:47

I average nearly 20k. But I walk a lot. Miles and miles some days. If I have a day at home without the kids, I can easily do less than 3k. 10k a day should be achievable with a half hour or so walk.
28k would be hours and hours of activity. She'd know if she was that active.

2000 steps is about a mile. So either your evening walk is incredibly slow or you are undercounting significantly.

Missywelliot · 16/05/2025 16:47

I do at least 14k a day. I walk to work and the supermarket.
A 5k run gives me about 6k steps. Bigger strides on that though.
I've only hit over 25k steps on a day out in london. It's accurate to about 3% as I've mentally counted my steps many times and compared them to my watch. It's always almost spot on.

This didn’t sound right. I do over 2000 steps in about 20 minutes so 45 minutes would be closer to 5,000 steps. I’m not a particularly fast walker.

I used to do 10K steps daily when I lived in London. It was mainly the 15-20 minutes walk each way to the train station, all the walking involved transferring in the connecting stations, and then some walking when I’d go to various schools via bus. And then even more if I’d go meet a friend after work for dinner or whatever.

Teateaandmoretea · 16/05/2025 16:49

Or maybe your legs are 10 feet long OP? 😂

beardediris · 16/05/2025 16:49

Most people seem to consider me a big walker I average 15k. Much to my surprise I’ve had friends to stay who regularly go the gym and attend hideously strenuous classes they struggle to do15k a day. On a very busy day at work and dog walking before and after work I can hit 24 k but that is basically rarely if ever sitting down in 13 hours you’d have to be exceedingly active to achieve 28k not living an average life ie walking the Camino or the equivalent and I’d think you’d know if she was this active.

AnonWho23 · 16/05/2025 16:49

In my normal day I do 8000 ish. I do the school run 3 times there and back. If I do the walk up to the high road 15 minutes, go to the shops, and walk back I do 10,000.

WoolerOwl · 16/05/2025 16:52

I think you must be under recording, or walking very slowly. I do about 1,100 steps for every 10 mins I walk. And I don’t think I walk quickly.

Newbutoldfather · 16/05/2025 16:53

I did a 15 mile sponsored walk last weekend and another 4 miles that day. My step count was 39,000. Normally I do about 5,000 steps unless I go out for a walk (I don’t run with my phone).

28,000 steps would be about 10-15 miles depending on stride length, which is a lot!

On the other hand, why do you want to convince your friend if she wants to believe it?

A 45 minute walk clocks up between 5000-6000 steps for me on both my phone or my Apple Watch. The average person walks at a speed of 900-1000 steps in 10 minutes at a brisk pace. I’ve had a goal of 15000 steps a day this year, 5000 is in a day I’m ill and barely move and don’t leave the house.

Jetsettermum · 16/05/2025 16:54

I only did 21000 on a full day at Disney land. I have adhd and don’t sit down all day and i average 12000 a day. No way is she doing 28k a day unless she’s running daily marathons

bluedelphiniums · 16/05/2025 16:54

When I do a week-long walk every summer, averaging between 15-18 miles a day, my step count is around the 30,000 -35,000 mark. There's no way she's walking 28,000 just by going about her daily life.

ninjahamster · 16/05/2025 16:54

When I worked in a warehouse, I easily did 15000 a day. Then add in a dog walk, and general movement I regularly did 20000 no bother.

Do you walk really slowly? 10,000 isn’t that hard to get, I do an office job but will get 10k if I walk at lunchtime, to the bus and do an evening walk as well as the usual walking around in the day.

zenas · 16/05/2025 16:55

I only take note of the distance walked in a day. That would be me leaving the house and walking for about 45 minutes or a little more. Every day except Sunday. I don't take note of ordinary stuff like walking around the house and "non deliberate" walking.

That's me sorted at 68 now! I do more than the recommended 150 minutes a week and it's at a reasonable clip for my age. I'm happy with that.

There's far too much competitive "step comparison/boasting" going on. It's the same with chugging down litres of water. The steps don't always mean good cardiac activity and the water is not needed in such volumes most of the time either.
