Friend not accepting she’s NOT doing 28,000 steps per day

Just can’t convince her! Showed her that her app is picking up arm movement ..got her to move her arm whilst seated 😳 but she still insists she’s nearly up to 30,000 every day!

Just read on here that someone is doing 10,000 steps per day but this is really hard to achieve!

How do people squeeze it in alongside work/parenting/household stuff? I manage 5,000 steps in an active role ..nowhere near the recommended 🤨

I work 12 hour shifts as a nurse, and walk to work. My average is 15000

Jaderebecca · 16/05/2025 17:07

I average 25,000 a day! 2 long walks and running around after a 2 year old. I’m on my feet all day.

What does it matter? Surely movement is movement whether it is your arms or legs. Are you saying wheelchair sports people are inactive because it's not an actual step?

You seem a bit overinvested in what she does or doesn't do.

Moving your forearm up and down is obviously not the same in terms of physical effort as moving your entire body one step forward.

johnd2 · 16/05/2025 17:10

You don't need to convince her, just agree to disagree!

TheCurious0range · 16/05/2025 17:11

I just walked home from work 1.1 miles took just over 20 minutes (I was on the phone for some of it) and my fit bit says that was 2478 steps so if you find 10000 a day hard, I don't think you're as active as you think.

ETA I've walked 7876 steps so far today, I walked to work and back again and have spent most of the day sitting at my desk. I need to go to collect a parcel in a bit and that will probably push me over the 10000 for today and it's what I'd consider a fairly sedentary one

IAmNeverThePerson · 16/05/2025 17:11

I walk 10km a day and am reasonably active 30,000 would be a stretch for me. 24,000 more standard.

justkeepswimingswiming · 16/05/2025 17:11

10,000 steps isn’t hard to achieve I can do that doing the school run & pottering around the house/garden! I do around 11k a day.

BorntoDillyDally · 16/05/2025 17:12

My friend is the same, she regularly puts on her IG feed that she's completed 30k steps that day. One day even did 50k. However, she's a hairdresser, I've tried telling her that her device is picking up her arm movements, no convincing her though.

I walk my dog across fields 2-3 times a day and don't get anywhere near that many steps per day.

FroggyJBS · 16/05/2025 17:13

I was always amazed when my step counter told me I'd done 5000 steps before I left the house in the morning - then I realised it picked up arm movements, expecially when I was ironing!

justasking111 · 16/05/2025 17:14

Sons summer job big restaurant, bar with outside seating averaged 16k on an 8 hour shift. Last year went to Porto with partner one day did a lot of sightseeing it's very hilly. They did 26k but took it easy the next day.

Husband 73 years likes to do 15k a day but gardening, fishing lowers it.

FiveBarGate · 16/05/2025 17:15

That's 12 miles a day.

I've done a seven mile walk today and that's 18000. I have a three mile walk to do later and I've done some gardening.

I won't get anywhere near 30,000. And I've been off. Its a good few hours of walking which would be a lot to fit around work.

andtheworldrollson · 16/05/2025 17:15

It’s about an hour solid walking per 5000 steps for me

No mixing pancake batter isn't the same as walking.

Ladyoats · 16/05/2025 17:19

And yeah I doubt your friend is doing 28,000 steps walking around a small space at work and then being mostly sedentary at home, unless she works as a dance instructor or something.

I was always on my feet as a teacher but I didn’t get up to 10K steps from moving around the classroom alone let alone 28,000 steps. I think doing waitressing sometimes I may have had around 10K steps in a shift though.

The times I think I’ve achieved 25K + step counts is like when I was in Thailand walking around in the early afternoon for hours between temples . I’d walk then take pics and walk some more. I lost half a stone in 2 weeks!

Or during the pandemic I went out to what I think was Elizabeth park or some other very large park and we spent about 6 hours there moving from place to place in the park every now and again. I clocked up over 20K steps that day - that also includes walking to and from my local train station and connections.

Um no. Waving your arm around isn’t the same level of activity as walking

EveryOtherNameTaken · 16/05/2025 17:22

I know what you mean. I was with somebody who was convinced we'd walked 8.miles that day. We did 4. She insisted her app told her so she believed it. I think part of it was the tube wobble was picked up.

I walk every day and know distances very well. Didn't want to piss on her parade but suggested her app was oversensitive.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 16/05/2025 17:23

The last time I did 28000 steps in a day was at a music festival and my feet felt like they'd been ground to a pulp after all that walking. There's no way she's doing 28k steps a day.

Happilyobtuse · 16/05/2025 17:27

I do 12K average a day. I take two walks and that is around 4 miles, rest is from walking around at home and some exercise. I try to do star jumps when I have time and usually do around 150 a day. Rest of the day I am at my desk as I WFH. 28K steps is highly unlikely unless she is a professional athlete and is working out all day!

Yeah good point, if someone really is doing 28K a day I hope they’ve got great supportive footwear because they may end up with plantar fasciitis.

I ended up getting PF due to working in retail/waitressing/teaching which involved me standing up all day, wearing outdoor footwear with too thin soles and going barefoot a lot at home.

I wouldn’t let myself go above 15K on a regular basis nowadays and I wear slippers, insoles and more comfortable and supportive footwear.

HashtagShitShop · 16/05/2025 17:28

My postie used to clock about 28-30K a day steps Monday to Saturday and his route was looooooooooong and he'd stop for a chat and a drink because of it on really hot days. We got to know him quite well because of it.

Before him we'd had a postie a month for a long time as the sorting office wouldn't learn and break the round up. People would do it for up to a month and then give it up because of how big it was.

She'd have to be constantly walking for several hours a day for 28K!

Asuitablecat · 16/05/2025 17:31

I stand all day and stomp up and down corridors. I do 5500 a day. I apparently did lesswhen I had my old watch.

A 10k run gets me another 6 or 7000 steps.

Recently sightseeing trip had me at 22,000. And I was on my feet on and off for 16 hours.

Is she very short? I'm tall and never seem to do as many steps as shorter people.

bluesinthenight · 16/05/2025 17:33

And you're bothered by this because...?

notacooldad · 16/05/2025 17:36

Does it really matter what she thinks?
You've said what you think and I'm tending to agree with you but if she wants to think that, it's fine, it doesn't affect you in any way.
Just nod and smile and don't care.

Caroparo52 · 16/05/2025 17:40

Why are you so bothered? Just ignore it

Doggymummar · 16/05/2025 17:42

Wow I was at an all day exhibition earlier in the week was on the go from 7 to 7 and did less than 5 thousand. In a normal day WFH it's less than 2000. 28000 is about how many miles ? 10 I think
