HMRC data shows we've lost 152,000 PAYE jobs since the general election, 33,000 in April alone. 😳

This is shocking. I was just reading the latest ONS figures:-

The unemployment rate in the UK has risen to its highest level in almost 4 years. The ONS said the rate was 4.5% in the first three months of this year, up 0.2% on previous quarter and the highest reading since summer 2021.

The number of vacancies in the economy was down 5.3% in the three months to the end of April. There were 761,000 job vacancies in that period, a 131,000 drop on a year ago, with the construction sector experiencing the biggest decline'.

Pay growth also down from 5.9% to 5.6%.

The Learning and Work Institute said; 'the largest employment falls seen in retail and hospitality. These were also the sectors where pay growth has been fastest as the minimum wage rise comes in'.

Good morning. This weeks Yougov/Sky poll:

Reform 28
Labour 23
Cons 18
LD 16
GR 9

I heard Robert Jenrick on Sky this morning. He is supportive of Starmers 'island of strangers' comment yesterday. I'm sure Starmer and his supporters will thrilled to have Robert Jenrick on their team.

Oh, that's interesting. Just had a look and the survey was done on the 11-12 May. I wish they were time stamped - such are Labour's own goals now that whether this was concluded before Starmer's speech would be the most useful bit of info.

There's nothing good there, is there?

Good point. It does show both labour and cons up 1% each, and reform down 1%, so it could be the speech yesterday. Next week's figures will be a better reflection of impact I think.

No, nothing good from the ONS figures.

I was done with them when the hand outs for overpriced glasses and clothes thing came up - intergrity? What’s that. They’ve all proven spectacularly talentless.

EasternStandard · 13/05/2025 10:37

Is it that fast? I’m not sure it’s be included on those dates.

TheNuthatch · 13/05/2025 11:22

Thanks.
That's the article I was quoting from, but too lazy to link.

MN really cracks me up sometimes. Starmer has a shiny new set of principles.

We are now allowed to discuss immigration without being labelled racist, fascist, right wing bandwagon wagon jumping, dog whistling nazis! Hooray. 😂

It’s ridiculous isn’t it how the reprogramming is that fast. Starmer to supporters in a hot minute.

Suddenly ‘everyone is talking about it and that’s good’. GTF quite frankly!

Until he finds a newer shinier set 😆

I feel legitimised and vindicated by Starmer himself. The new Starmer is more right wing than I am 😂. It's hilarious.

Sir Flip Flop, I salute you.

You know, here we were thinking Starmer was a charmless, nasal whistling, wet blanket of a robot but, fuck me, he's like fcatnip to Labour supporters as he leads them like the Pied Piper to the reform mountains never to be seen again.

That's the second thing I didn't see coming this week - 🤷🏼‍♀️

I always appreciate these descriptions 😬

TheNuthatch · 13/05/2025 17:03

Do we even have a Labour party anymore? Under Starmer it has totally morphed into something I don't recognise.

I think it's extremely telling that there has been no violence over the winter fuel cuts nor the latest boat people speech and so on.
Had the tories said and done any of this there would have been riots. Massive trouble.

I also saw a headline this morning, Ed milliband wife is being a nimby.
Unfortunately it was behind a pay wall so I couldn't read more but I'm not sure I would want too.

Agree with your first paragraph.

Here's a free version of the Mrs M nimby story. She says its 'too tall, too bulky and too dense' ( I think she means the building rather than Ed).

Edited

Not too sure she didn't mean Ed.

The bacon sandwich incident had more impact on the general public at the time than any of his political campaigning, and I'm not entirely sure his image has ever recovered.

Some Labour are very loyal. You can see it with posters on here.

Don't be so daft. The Tories did a lot of nasty stuff, much worse than taking £200/£300 a year from pensioners (which I think was a bad move) or saying bad things about immigrants (I don't like what Starmer said). No riots ensued.

Politics is so depressing and angry all the time now. I know Boris was a knob, but he is interesting, and he made me laugh with his oratory. He was always positive, I miss that. Humph.

Has anyone got any positive news stories to share? I've had enough doom and gloom for today. Asteroids? Escaped kangaroo?

Same. Sorry I only had the tissue story and even The Telegraph app isn’t throwing up much that is amusing.

Upstartled · 14/05/2025 06:27

Okay, I have some good news. Or I think it's good news at least. It's controversial, so it's risky and may set the cat among the pigeons. But, on Monday, ministers had the good sense not to progress proposals by the Law Commission which pushed for relaxations in the law around surrogacy in this country and putting it on a par with assisted conception. It's aim was to untether surrogacy from the understanding that it is a highly unethical problematic practice that should remain highly regulated.

This was the proposal which, just quietly, has been shelved.

Not yesterday, on the 8th. Honestly, I shouldn't post this early on a morning.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 14/05/2025 06:46

I’ve been enjoying Milliband’s wife’s NIMBY row.

Too many noisy heat pumps, too dense development, not in keeping with the character of the area apparently, while the rest of us are all expected to rejoice at yet another
flats behemoth.
