“"A lack of faith is often tragically accompanied by the loss of meaning in life, the neglect of mercy, appalling violations of human dignity, the crisis of the family and so many other wounds that afflict our society,"

I don’t know why I expected anything different. Maybe because he likes Wordle?

If you are secure in your atheism you shouldn't care what other people, including the pope, think or say about religion. Maybe you need to think more about why this bothers you enough to post about it.

How do you not understand why people worldwide care about what the leader of the Catholic church says regardless of their religion.

I hoped he would not do the boring “atheists have no moral compass and have a God shaped hole at their core” routine. Very many religious people
don’t do that. And I hoped he wouldn’t suggest that that atheists have no mercy and commit appalling violations of human dignity.very many religious people don’t do that either.

Well, religious people have to endure atheists' constant accusations that we are violent, backwarded, hateful, stupid, blinded, etc. It's about time someone points out that atheists aren't innocent in all that is bad and wrong in this world.

Also, as an atheist, why do you actually care about the pope at all, or anything he has to say? Why do you need his validation?

BlondiePortz · 10/05/2025 00:21

So a Catholic pope needs to think of the atheists?

Gnomegarden32 · 10/05/2025 00:24

TheSeventh · 09/05/2025 23:30

This man should visit Ireland and ask who has inflicted more wounds on society, atheists, or the Catholic church?

Exactly - his words are absurd. I know what 'appalling violations of human dignity' makes me think of.

LaurelAvenue · 10/05/2025 00:27

Well that didn't take long for the Richard Dawkins fanclub to mobilise and start bashing religion.🙄

Iamthequeenoftheworld · 10/05/2025 00:28

Forget this!!!!

im more concerned about this pope covering up/ignoring/mishandling child sexual abuse

Who cares about all this other stuff?????

why are more people not talking about this???? Especially on this mother forum??????

I know right. How good would it have been if he said 'sorry about turning a blind eye to child abuse cases earlier in my career. I'm going to make it my mission to root out and expel from the church any abusers from whatever poor, vulnerable community we've shunted them off to'.

Probably for the same reason I am not concerned what the Dalai Lama says...

We're all humans.

Humans can be violent, backward, stupid etc.

Atheism is not a way of life that teaches morals and how to be good. It's just a lack of belief in God. That's all. Other than that, atheists are just humans with all their flaws.

I find it hypocritical that there are ' people who claim to be religious and to follow religious morals but who when you look at their actions, really don't follow them.

If you are going to say you have faith, then surely you should try and follow the beliefs and teaching of that faith,

LaurelAvenue · 10/05/2025 00:43

When did he do that?

Huh? The power and influence the two organisations have are hardly comparable.

LaurelAvenue · 10/05/2025 00:50

@InWalksBarberalla It seems he was exonerated

"The Vatican’s press office did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the statements from Snap and SCSA. It has generally maintained that Prevost is free of any wrongdoing or followed canonical norms in the clergy abuse cases he has confronted"

Readytohealnow · 10/05/2025 00:53

I think if you are looking for supporters of your pro atheist views, the Pope is probably not a likely candidate 🤣

The Vatican has generally maintained he is free of any wrongdoing 'or followed canonical norms'. So in other words covered them up as was the norm. In fairness there are likely no candidates for the position that hasn't done the same.

LaurelAvenue · 10/05/2025 01:06

Let's not forget that the worst cases of child sex abuse in this country were carried out by non-Catholics

And your proof for that statement is?

Compared to the Grooming Gangs Scandal I think you have your priorities a bit skewed

Didn’t see a single bit of this in what you quoted but sure what a terrible bastard?

Maybe start here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Church_sexual_abuse_cases_by_country

The grooming gangs scandal is appalling but it hardly compares in scale.

The Pope is dope
He gives us hope
He never mopes
Or wastes some soap
He’s like a rope
That helps us cope
The Pope is dope

What a pathetic comparison. Do you see mosques trying to protect abusers? No. Don’t use other religion to deflect from the abuse by priests.

Were they? I don't know how or why we gauge that but it also doesn't matter, no organisation should be covering up child abuse. Especially one that claims to be a moral authority!
