I'm a classic 'don't eat fish unless it's in batter' type, I'm afraid.

Not as bad as me. I’m a tin of tuna girl and even then it’s rare!

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2025 18:44

Post gallbladder me can't eat tuna. That was my only other fish!

I love that idea. I am the only mussel consumer in my house. Very partial to a pot of cockles or a bit of Cromer crab too.

Same here, the others only eat the fish in batter type but one of dgd's is partial to mussels & prawns we sometimes go out for lunch just us & merrily scoff aforementioned delights.

Fish fingers, cod in batter, smoked salmon and tinned tuna for me, no other fish and definitely no seafood. DH likes most fish and seafood, but we rarely cook it at home as I don’t like the smell either.

My late father had been a chef in the officers mess when he did his National Service and loved all kinds of fish, including things like cod roe and anchovies.

DuncinToffee · 19/05/2025 19:14

I love fresh fish and seafood. We had seabass with a caper and lemon dressing last night 👌

I need to be more adventurous with fish. We had some in Umbria that was like a Facehugger from Alien. That was a bit too adventurous for me….

countrygirl99 · 19/05/2025 19:28

All this talk of fish is reminding me I haven't had mussels for a few weeks. I usually cook them in cider with chilli and ginger. I've got some salmon and sea bass in the freezer so might have teriyaki salmon or sea bass ceviche next week.

BIossomtoes · 19/05/2025 19:42

I see Lord Frost is ranting again.

We should have realised what was going on last Saturday night – when the Austrians won Eurovision with “Wasted Love”. This country will pay the price for it.

😂

countrygirl99 · 19/05/2025 19:48

Has he been drinking?

Presumably they felt similarly over Boris Johnson's deal. There is no change to current access to fish for coastal communities.

Does not Scotland not produce any oysters, scallops, clams etc?
Will they not benefit from the changes to rules?

Yes they will. The export market in fish is far greater than our own domestic market. This export market was near collapse given the delays on SPS standards which have now been permanently liberalised. It’s good for fishermen and agrifood exports imo. The UK’s food production will see the benefits.

Good result.

Well if Brits ate more fish they'd have a better business model. I used to work in a fishmonger and it's largely immigrants that are the big customers. British consumers, in general, will only buy a very limited range and then only rarely.

I know, offered some friends, who travel a lot and who i thought would at least try it, some Whiting, wouldn't touch it.

Funny thing is, i bet they buy Merlan when shopping in Carrefour!

There are some posters very deliberately ignoring this - its a vast improvement for those exporting British foods.

Fabulous, now I know Lord Frost's Mumsnet user name! I mean, surely there can't be two people who think that Eurovision and the EU are in any way connected?

bombastix · 19/05/2025 20:27

its the usual suspects moaning. This is a good deal for UK food production

BestIsWest · 19/05/2025 20:29

I had family in the seafood business (sadly no longer here) so it’s close to my heart. I think this will be good news as most of their produce was exported to Europe. Mussels would be my Saturday Kitchen food heaven.

littledrummergirls · 19/05/2025 20:30

Vegetarian here so no fish. Have been winkle picking for dm though.

It looks like a good thing to me.

I haven't seen whiting in the shops since it was about £1.40 /lb in Tesco at the end of the 80s. Perfect for a cheap student feast.

countrygirl99 · 19/05/2025 20:52

I used to feed DC whiting fillets. They are child sized.

Finally seen the world eat itself ...

When finally pressed about a Brexit benefit, I have seen a poster come up with "Freedom to do deals", when pointed out to them that it was exactly that freedom which allowed the UK to make this deal ...

"But not that sort of deal ...."

Oh do fuck off dear.

The real message that needs to be relentlessly pushed here is that Brexiteers will never be happy and so can safely be ignored. Which I have found is always the best way to deal with these sort of children people.

That’s the crux of it.

Brexit was sold as the unicorn dream. Everyone has different dreams.

There was no if we leave then x …… other than the NHS lie.

So because everyone who voted to leave did so on their own version of Brexit - Brexit can never be right.

cakeorwine · 19/05/2025 21:44

People voted to leave the EU.
I don't remember anymore questions about what leaving should look like and what kind of relationship we should have with the EU once we left.

Some Brexiteers.

I think that it's a good thing. I didn't like the right wing bollocks and want a grown up, proper trade agreement that works for everyone.

grannycake · 20/05/2025 06:34

Good news for me is that pet passports are to be reintroduced. The old pet passport cost around £50 and lasted 5 yrs. Since Brexit we have needed an animal health certificate - we have been charged around £275 for this. BY my reckoning (2 trips per year) thats an extra £2250 in charges that I will save.

MsJinks · 20/05/2025 06:51

I said on a different thread that I learned how damaging the animal/vet difficulties were - a baby black hippo I saw was likely unable to go to it’s natural habitat, as planned, due to Brexit. I never even knew things like that would be impacted - though I was sure it would be all round disastrous.
I’m really not sure what objections can be had to stuff like this - it’s natural alignment with neighbours to progress mutually agreeable aims. Criminality sharing should be one for the Brexiteers too, as it is often on migrants - but no - it’s ’the EU’
We behave like we are in the position of South Korea with France particularly and the rest somewhat being North Korea.
I’m not really sure what Brexiteers want - to move our islands to be closer to the US? To return to the days of Empire? Though if either happened it would be those shouting loudest for it that would be most disaffected imo - apart from the few very, very rich with different reasons for wanting such a hard Brexit and money to cushion the difficulties most plebs just have to endure.

bombastix · 20/05/2025 07:02

My view is a lot of them want a Tardis to go back in time. Since they can’t have that, they want laws and opinions to be those of many many years ago. And to acknowledge today or actually reality is to betray what is a nostalgic idea. There never are any practical suggestions from Brexit supporters.

The way that this has been sequenced by the UK is pretty clever, India, US and EU. I don’t think we are finished on this. I like what has happened- it’s a proper acknowledgement of what world we are in now, and plans accordingly.

Not a witless nostalgia fest.
