Salmon Scotland: "We congratulate the UK gov't on securing this deal with the EU, which will slash red tape and speed up the delivery of our premium salmon to market."

I can't get my head around it. The people who are complaining about having to pay VAT on their children's school fees are suddenly outraged about what they say is the lack of Erasmus opportunity for working class kids.

Yeah, right.

Starmer has actually negotiated something good, but they can't bear to acknowledge it.

Euramus is part of EU Youth Program - and there is much more to it than Uni study. Under EU Youth there are 100s' of opportunities open to 18-30 year olds for voluntary schemes to take part in with travel funded across the EU.

DS did 12 months of this as he has EU passport and he loved it and he acquired a huge amount of confidence and skills. He's just back from Italy and Vienna meeting up with some friends he made on the program.

Well if Brits ate more fish they'd have a better business model. I used to work in a fishmonger and it's largely immigrants that are the big customers. British consumers, in general, will only buy a very limited range and then only rarely.

I would imagine that it's too expensive for a lot of families.

You're allowed to forage for mussels on a public beach @Notonthestairs I've done it, south Wales, and a fantastic meal it was. All four of us survived.

I love that idea. I am the only mussel consumer in my house. Very partial to a pot of cockles or a bit of Cromer crab too.

I don’t know the ins and outs of deals. It’s the lack of respect for people who work in manual jobs. I voted against Brexit but I still have respect for views that are opposite to my own.

I worked 12 hour shifts, a year in night shifts in care homes. I've volunteered to help parents with SEN children the desired outcome they wanted - loved doing that. Have been a town councillor and loved cross party collaborations to help and enrich the local community.

Don't please question if I've not done anything worthy in my life.

Karistyleaftea · 19/05/2025 16:56

@derxa I 'm not sure if it always comes across from you
that "you still have respect for views that are opposite to your own."
In my opinion.
I have been on the receiving end of some of your comments previously when I kept re iterating that I was a strong supporter of Sir Keir Starmer.

I would love if Brits ate more fish then we might have access to a more interesting range. Cod is so overrated.

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2025 17:00

I'm a classic 'don't eat fish unless it's in batter' type, I'm afraid.

Salmon Scotland: "We congratulate the UK gov't on securing this deal with the EU, which will slash red tape and speed up the delivery of our premium salmon to market."

That's rather selective @DuncinToffee

Some sections of Scotland's Fishing Industry have accused Starmer's Government of "capitulating" to the EU over a deal on access to UK waters. The agreement was described as disastrous by the Scottish Fisherman's Federation.

PickAChew · 19/05/2025 17:01

I fancy some hake, now.

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2025 17:02

The meat industry is happy with what's gone on today.

I honestly think rapid soundbites aren't probably useful. The dust needs to settle.

Some sections of Scotland's Fishing Industry have accused Starmer's Government of "capitulating" to the EU over a deal on access to UK waters. The agreement was described as disastrous by the Scottish Fisherman's Federation.

Salmon Scotland, the trade body which represents the fish farms behind the UK’s largest food export, said the EU trade deal would “slash red tape” and cut export costs.

The organisation estimates that post-Brexit food export rules cost exporters around £3m a year, with France the sector’s biggest customer. The sector sold £844m worth of farmed salmon overseas last year, with £462m sent to France alone.

Tavish Scott, the chief executive of Salmon Scotland and former leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, is at a reception to celebrate the deal in London later. He said:

We congratulate the UK government on securing this deal with the EU, which will slash red tape and speed up the delivery of our premium salmon to market.
This breakthrough eases the burden on our farmers, processors and the communities they support, and we welcome efforts to implement it at pace. The withdrawal of physical checks is particularly welcome. It means lower costs and quicker deliveries for our customers.

Presumably they felt similarly over Boris Johnson's deal. There is no change to current access to fish for coastal communities.

Does not Scotland not produce any oysters, scallops, clams etc?
Will they not benefit from the changes to rules?

To save time, it's instructive to scan the responses of certain representatives.

If both Farage and the Tories who both hate Britain, other peoples prosperity and unity aren't happy with this move, then I can safely assume it's broadly a good thing.

AFAIK, the largest fish industry in Scotland is now salmon farming. As aforementioned, the salmon industry is delighted. I'm pretty sure Arbroath Smokies are also exported to EU countries.

More on fishing (c&p from Sky News)

It is true that it may help producers of farmed shellfish and salmon, as well as the biggest retailers and exporters, but it is very unlikely that any savings from reduced export costs will be passed down to the men and women who go to sea," a statement read - the emphasis coming from the NFFO.

"If the government has a plan to ensure these cost savings go down the supply chain, we are eager to hear it and happy to work with them on it."

The statement also welcomes the "Fishing and Coastal Growth Fund" announced today - but says the "devil will be in the detail".

The group calls on the government to rebuild its relationship with coastal communities - and says there must be a "long term plan to help fishing business grow and coastal communities to thrive".

The Scottish Fishermen's Federation was slightly less complementary of what was agreed.

Elspeth Macdonald, the head of the group, branded it a "horror show for Scottish fishermen, far worse than Boris Johnson's botched Brexit agreement."

It will suit certain commentators to only fix on fish rather than comment on the overall package of measures - even the Times has the deal as a score draw.

But the lifting of veterinary checks is a win for the UK however anyone cuts it and will be a boost to trade.

We used to like making money.

The nerve of the Sun to discuss trickle down economics.
