Federation of Small Businesses has welcomed the deal. Said it was 'genuine progress'

I can't get my head around it. The people who are complaining about having to pay VAT on their children's school fees are suddenly outraged about what they say is the lack of Erasmus opportunity for working class kids.

Yeah, right.

Starmer has actually negotiated something good, but they can't bear to acknowledge it.

Snobbism? The are unbelievable condescendant towards (red wall) wc people

Farage stepped down in order to pave the way for a Johnson led government and a get Brexit done deal. Is it okay now to say I do love schadenfreude?

They don't give a toss about the Red Wall working class. They want Farage in now that he has said he will scrap VAT on school fees.

Notonthestairs · 19/05/2025 14:49

Farage offered private school parents a 20% tax relief on school fees in his 2024 manifesto.

Its very much in their interests to get Farage/Reform in No 10.

Yes, it's almost fantastical.

A really slick political operator would publicly use the extra wonga from improved trade to "postpone" the VAT on school fees, and then drop it in 2027. With the narrative that it was the intention all along, but that it had to be delicately negotiated, what with the UKs name being mud the world over.

As I said, that's what a really slick political operator would do.

If trade does improve as suggested, the WFA cut could be consigned to history too.

"The EU saves private schools" is an interesting headline we won't see in the Express. Even if we dared them.

Angry Fight GIF by Sappy Seals

It'll be about the Fishes in the sea, and a Monty Python sketch comes to mind.

As an MEP Fartage attended 1 of the 42 fishery committee meetings.

And that was by mistake. He was looking for the bar. (Presumably a low one).

2dogsandabudgie · 19/05/2025 16:13

Have read in The Telegraph that the 12 year fishing rights deal cannot be overturned if a new Government comes to power otherwise the EU will be allowed to impose sanctions on the UK.

placemats · 19/05/2025 16:16

Fishing only accounts for an estimated 0.04% of UK GDP.

Total bollocks. No parliament can bind its successor.

Like all treaties there may be penalties - either explicit or implied - if it's broken. But - as has always been the case - parliament is supreme.

Why do the anti EU brigade hate Britain so much ?

I find this sort of comment extremely insulting to the people who risk their lives to provide food. What do you do that’s so important.

The cmment is not aimed at fishermen but at people weaponising it as a brexit betrayal.

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2025 16:28

It's also a factual statement.

Derxa , genuinely, do you just lurk here until you can tell one of us off? Because that's how it feels.

And there is a specific arbitration process for fisheries.

Well if Brits ate more fish they'd have a better business model. I used to work in a fishmonger and it's largely immigrants that are the big customers. British consumers, in general, will only buy a very limited range and then only rarely.

We've been here before. In what must be a metaphor for something, British people don't like the fish you catch in British waters. However our continental chums love them.

Many fishers sold their rights to continental firms and that was before Brexit. Post Brexit they sell fishes caught to the EU because the fish catch is more suitable to a continental taste and it's more profitable than cod.

This new deal will actually benefit them.

placemats · 19/05/2025 16:46

I'm quite flattered @derxa that you answered my call from the 'wrong thread'

Notonthestairs · 19/05/2025 16:47

Agree that UK customers should embrace fish caught in Uk waters. But why are people overlooking the new agreement on shellfish? I bloody love mussels.
It really shouldnt have been easier to sell oysters to Dubai than to France.

placemats · 19/05/2025 16:49

You're allowed to forage for mussels on a public beach @Notonthestairs I've done it, south Wales, and a fantastic meal it was. All four of us survived.

I don’t know the ins and outs of deals. It’s the lack of respect for people who work in manual jobs. I voted against Brexit but I still have respect for views that are opposite to my own.
