He held my hand!

My little boy has profound disabilities. He functions well below his chronological age in all areas, is pre-verbal, he smiles at my voice but not if I smile as he's registered blind. Today, at the age of five (almost) and for the first time ever, he held my hand! His grasp reflex has always been absent due to cerebral palsy and his hands are usually tightly fisted with his thumb tucked in but more and more just lately he's been opening his hands and trying to explore things. Just now I opened his hand to clean his palm and he gripped my hand. Tightly. It was such a moment I took a photo to show his therapists and teachers.

This is one of the loveliest posts on MN, I am so delighted for you!
Such a small thing but so important, so real, thank you for sharing....and my thoughts for you and your little boy.

Amongst all the MN posts comparing salaries, big houses, arguments between friends or families, something like this is what real life is all about.

What a lovely moment for you both! I hope it's the first of many hand-holds. ❤

IButtleSir · 05/05/2025 17:00

PS My niece also has profound disabilities. She didn't start giving kisses until she was about 7 or 8. She's nearly 13, and my sister (her mum) still gets kisses CONSTANTLY. I hope you get those too!

Sasha07 · 05/05/2025 17:00

Flooded with love for your moment, how amazing for you both 🥰

Cuwins · 05/05/2025 17:05

That’s amazing! Great news.
I spent many years working with children with complex needs and similar functioning levels and those tiny little marks of progress make everything worth while. I vividly remember a young person getting excited when they heard my voice (also blind) after I had an extended absence- it is a moment that will stay with me forever.

slapmyarseandcallmemary · 05/05/2025 17:08

Amazing x

palmtree2008 · 05/05/2025 17:12

This is so lovely. My uncle had cerebral palsy and his parents were told that he wouldn’t make double figures. He lived to his mid 70s and although he had difficulties as he became older, he worked for his whole career and went on many holidays to the US by himself and had a very positive outlook

WaxingGibbon · 05/05/2025 17:17
