Hoping some hidden gems might be found!

Tonight I saw A Woman of No Importance. It's a monologue performed by Patricia Routledge. I think it's from the 80s? Anyway, what I thought was a bit of satire really shone a light on loneliness and what a life ends up as, or can end up as. Also, PR didn't half know how to deliver a monologue! I'd pretty much only known her as Hyacinth Bucket.

Came to say this too. I never saw it advertised or had it recommended until a thread here about Mrs Harris Goes To Paris, also with Lesley Manville. DH and I binged it in about a week and it’s so lovely.

Totally different vibe but I loved My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on Netflix but nobody I’ve recommended it to has ever seen or heard of it.

Mumsnet seems to lpve Mum and I think I probably tried it after reading about it on here but it really wasn't my cup of tea, I found her so wishy washy that I wanted to give her a good old shake 😁

bodies… think it was BBC but now on Netflix… good for those who love hospital drama/politics. Though it I feel Max Beasleys acting look very wooden…. I can watch it over and over.

Two doors down. My
absolute go to if there’s nothing else on!!! And then still game. Love a cheeky Scottish comedy!!

Peter Mullan is my "odd crush!"

At the moment im watching leap day once a week.

Gundogday · 30/04/2025 21:58

Dirk Gently - starred Steve Mangen and was superb. Axed too soon.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 30/04/2025 22:04

@icebearforpresident & @scarfacecoleslaw you are my people! 😍

I'd forgotten my last name change was after the end of series 6, poor Franklin although was he a villain or victim...?

FleaBeeBob · 30/04/2025 22:11

Flash Foward, it was cancelled after the first series because of shitty (you are not 18 years in high school, you approx 35) yawn fest Glee

MrsLargeEmbodied · 30/04/2025 22:32

just watched A cream cracker under the settee,
so sad

I put Firefly too! Absolutely love it, such a brilliant show. I’ve met most of the cast too! I have to say Nathan Fillion is such a wonderful human being - I’ll watch anything with him in it after having met him.

A follow Castle and The Rookie fan then? Resident Alien is Alan Turdyk.

sashh · 01/05/2025 04:50

The mention of Tru Calling has reminded me of Doll House, it starts out a bit 'samy' but then gets going and the second series is fabulous.

Snowfall - drama set in LA about the crack epidemic during the 1980’s.

One of the best series I’ve ever seen but nobody else has watched it.

There were 6 series (60 episodes!) but nobody I know has watched it or heard of it 😲

Yes, I've watched the whole series, I really got into it. When I've mentioned it to friends, no one has watched it. One friend doesn't like any film or TV programme that has drugs in it so I know she definitely will never watch it.

I really enjoyed Party Animals from about 20 years ago. It's a drama about young Westminster aides and had Matt Smith in it before he was well known. So sad they never made a second series.

I watched this about two weeks ago, I'd never heard of it before but found it really good.

Also The Hour with Kate Winslet and Dominic West. Never heard of that before but watched that a couple of months ago.

Really enjoyed both series.

Yes to all of the above. Akan is lovely too. I met him when I was pregnant and he spent about half an hour asking me all about the pregnancy etc!

did you see Nathan in 2 guys, a girl and a pizza place? Obviously there was his Buffy role too!

Is this an Alan Bennet play? I think I heard it on BBC sounds or on Audible

Yes, a whole series of Alan Bennet monologues were televised. All outstanding.

@InMyOpenOnion how did you manage to watch Party Animals? I'd love to see that again but it doesn't seem to be on any of the streaming services.

fussychica · 01/05/2025 08:38

A Private Affair, just finished this stylish comedy thriller set in early 1950s Galicia.
We mainly watch foreign stuff which most of friends and family don't so never get to talk about TV unless I've watched Traitors!

The flatshare

I loved this too

I did a thread on it but no one else commented 🤣
Which I was quite surprised at to be fair

I really enjoyed it

I recently finally watched Crazy Ex Girlfriend after my daughter raving about it when it was on Netflix a few years ago. It's so funny, and I still have some of the songs in my head! DD even went to London to see Rachel Bloom and other cast members do a concert.

I found it on ITVx but I see it has now been removed from there, and it now doesn't seem to be streaming anywhere else. Well apart from buying it on Prime. I am always reluctant to buy series and films though, as we pay out several subscriptions each month...

Also loved Mum, but why are her family so awful? Glad she had finally had enough by the end.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/05/2025 09:36

Also, Dark, Mr Inbetween and 1899

Dirty sexy money was fantastic!! I watched Succession years later, and I assume that the writers have also watched this show, thats all i'll say.

They are somewhat similar, but IMO Succession is a quantum leap better.
Although, as I said earlier in the thread, I thoroughly enjoyed DSM.

RoundSquareWithTriangles · 01/05/2025 15:02

Everyone Else Burns - A comedy on Channel 4, starring the actor who plays Will in The Inbetweeners...It's about a family who are members of a religion similar to Jehovah's Witnesses.

IamEarthymama · 01/05/2025 15:09

I loved Julia and Grimm, though the latter trailed off in later series.

i have never met anyone apart from DW who has seen You, Me and the Apocalypse, starting the wonderful Matthew Baynton.
We loved it.
It’s available on Prime and YouTube atm.

icebearforpresident · 01/05/2025 15:46

Thought of another one - For All Mankind on Apple TV. It’s basically an alternative history of what would have happened if Russia got to the moon first instead of America. Every series covers a decade, starting in the ‘60s. There’s 4 seasons so far and I think they’ve confirmed they’ll do another as well.

TheWomandalorian · 01/05/2025 16:10

The Americans, about a married couple who are KGB spies and live in Washington DC as an all American family during the 80s, unbeknownst to even their children. Hopefully still on Disney+
