Hoping some hidden gems might be found!

Tonight I saw A Woman of No Importance. It's a monologue performed by Patricia Routledge. I think it's from the 80s? Anyway, what I thought was a bit of satire really shone a light on loneliness and what a life ends up as, or can end up as. Also, PR didn't half know how to deliver a monologue! I'd pretty much only known her as Hyacinth Bucket.

Barry is absolutely phenomenal and I never hear anyone else mention it

I loved Barry , watched it after seeing it recommended on another thread. DH and I secretly refer to someone we know as NoHo Hank as he has similarities ( not the criminal tendencies thankfully)

Grimm. Ran for five season although the fifth wasn’t great, I think the writers were on strike then. Basically imagine the stories told by the Grimm Brothers were based on real events and fairy tale creatures (called Wesen) actually exist; so called Grimms are the only humans that can see their true nature. Grimms are tasked with hunting down the ‘bad ones’. Main character is a Grimm who’s also a detective so ends up investigating increasingly weird murders. Worth watching just for Monroe, the Wesen who ends up being the Grimms Yoda even though he just wants to do his Pilates and mend clocks

Ooh yes, I loved Grimm.

Ally McBeal.

Not a TV show, but the film ‘One Fine Day’. I’ve seen it so many times. Introduced it to a number of people but have never once come across anyone who has watched it.

I love Ally McBeal too but I'm pretty sure that was also widely popular

I started watching it again recently!

Pushing Daisies. Quirky supernatural detective show. Loved it but it was cancelled after 2 seasons!

I loved this!

Halt and Catch Fire. It’s set in the 80s and is about the development of the personal computer. Really good.

Yes, I binged watched that one from start to finish, so addictive. Do you know if it's still available anywhere now?

TheCurious0range · 30/04/2025 20:33

Deadloch it's a new Zealand comedy murder mystery ish s programme, very funny.

Also Galavant , hard to explain medieval musical.....

Oh and Mammoth about Tony Mammoth a 70s PE teacher presumed dead after a skiing accident who has actually just been frozen for thirty years, it's silly but very funny.

purpleme12 · 30/04/2025 20:34

And I definitely watched One Fine Day when I was little

Lua · 30/04/2025 20:34

For those of you that liked flash forward try the leftovers. It is a very different show, slow, but a unique experience on a similar theme.

It is one of my favourite Tv shows ever because it works in a completely different level than other TV shows, you have to watch as the dialogues are somewhat limited, but the acting fantastic.

Hebburn
I thought it was hilarious, Lisa Mcgrillis, Neil Grainger and Victoria Elliot were fantastic in it.

I also enjoyed Touch with Kiefer Sutherland which ended quite suddenly.

And Devious Maids

We really like Hebburn. Rewatched it all quite recently

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 30/04/2025 20:36

@Crushed23Ive seen One Fine Day! Only once years ago though

That takes me back, I watched One Fine Day in a very rainy afternoon in a very empty cinema while travelling in the US, no idea if it made it to a cinema release here

Ally McBeal must be one of the most watched C4 shows ever, it was huge 😂

I enjoyed Hebburn too, it was the first time I came across Chris Ramsey and I've liked him ever since

Me too, I can still picture Anna Friel in it 😁

Kizzy (the Didicot?) 1980s kids TV programme about a gypsy girl trying to integrate into a mainstream school.

The Diddakoi! Based on the book by Rumer Godden. Loved the book and the TV show.

Edited

I have no idea how I came across Mammoth but I agree very funny in a silly way, I don't know if I saw it when it was originally out or found a repeat somewhere

InMyOpenOnion · 30/04/2025 20:42

I really enjoyed Party Animals from about 20 years ago. It's a drama about young Westminster aides and had Matt Smith in it before he was well known. So sad they never made a second series.

Loads of memory joggers for me on this thread but were there two versions of it, I wouldn't have been watching children's TV in the 80s but I know I watched it as a child

No one I know has watched it. It's funny in an I can't believe teachers actually used to get away with some of the stuff Mammoth comes out with, way. I'm not sure how we came across it either. I think maybe we'd watched murder in successville (also niche) on iplayer, and it came up as a suggested show

Snowfall - drama set in LA about the crack epidemic during the 1980’s.

One of the best series I’ve ever seen but nobody else has watched it.

There were 6 series (60 episodes!) but nobody I know has watched it or heard of it 😲

I was coming on to say Snowfall.
Me and my DH loved this and waited patiently for every series. Recommended it to loads of people but still seem to be the only ones we know who watched it / know about it.
it was amazing!

My children like White Gold and it's vaguely similar to that so may have been recommended to me too

I've just looked that up as it sounds like something I'd like, I've added to my iPlayer list, thanks for the suggestion

I love BBC’s ‘ Mum’, it’s on iPlayer.
Starring Lesley Manville, it’s a comedy where nothing really happens. Brilliant.

Came to say this too. I never saw it advertised or had it recommended until a thread here about Mrs Harris Goes To Paris, also with Lesley Manville. DH and I binged it in about a week and it’s so lovely.

Totally different vibe but I loved My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on Netflix but nobody I’ve recommended it to has ever seen or heard of it.
