Hoping some hidden gems might be found!

Tonight I saw A Woman of No Importance. It's a monologue performed by Patricia Routledge. I think it's from the 80s? Anyway, what I thought was a bit of satire really shone a light on loneliness and what a life ends up as, or can end up as. Also, PR didn't half know how to deliver a monologue! I'd pretty much only known her as Hyacinth Bucket.

Halt and Catch Fire. It’s set in the 80s and is about the development of the personal computer. Really good.

Stath Lets Flats is beyond hilarious. Totally underrated. “Oh my gilly gosh!

DH and I tried that and gave up as neither of us found it funny, different SOH. 🤷‍♀️

OldSchoolCasualty · 30/04/2025 18:20

and now I've just remembered Jericho to. About a town after a nuclear apocalypse that managed to avoid destruction by being in a valley. It has Skeet Ulrich in it, only ran for one season. But that one season is perfect!
@Sasha07 No one has ever heard of Wayward Pines and it's such a shame! that show was brilliant

Thank you for the recommendations - I’m going to check out orphan black later!

My contributions are:
Offspring, an Australian series which is funny and moving in equal measure. It got me through lockdown; the characters were my friends and company when others weren’t allowed to be!

Colin from Accounts, a really funny series which matches my sense of humour perfectly! Also Australian, now I think about it…

kiwiblue · 30/04/2025 18:23

Friday Night Lights (TV series, not the film). It's American, no one here seems to have seen it.

UnctuousUnicorns · 30/04/2025 18:24

Going back a bit, I loved Mr. Don and Mr. George, the surreal humour is right up my street.

bigkahunaburger · 30/04/2025 18:25

Early Doors - absolutely hilariously funny and perfect comedy writing! But noone seems to know about it! Its just perfection.

saltnvinegarhulahoops · 30/04/2025 18:28

Dirty sexy money was fantastic!! I watched Succession years later, and I assume that the writers have also watched this show, thats all i'll say.

Another vote also for Unreal (season 1 only though), it is bingeable. Also Shrinking (recent show) on Apple TV. So many good ones on these lists.

GuttedMOB · 30/04/2025 18:39

If you liked Colin from Accounts try No Activity.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 30/04/2025 00:41

We studied this in English Lit in the 80s/90s. Brilliant writing. Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads if I recall?

Some of my lesser known favourites (in no way similar to your OP, or indeed to each other) are:

Smash - about the production of a broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe

Stath Lets Flats - hilariously awkward comedy about a Greek Cypriot letting agent

Younger - absolute trash but strangely addictive series from the makers of Sex & the City, about a 40 year old woman posing as a 26 year old to get back into work after being a SAHM.

Fisk - Australian series about a bumbling female lawyer, she’s brilliant and the supporting characters are all hilarious too.

No I think that one is A Cream Cracker under the Settee.

She's very good at that one too and it was also my first thought.

TheGhostOfPatButcher · 30/04/2025 18:49

If you have Disney + then Mr Inbetween.

DareDevil223 · 30/04/2025 18:49

I never usually like fantasy stuff but I was obsessed with Grimm and binge watched it - love it.

I have still not (and never will) forgive ITV for cancelling Whitechapel, one of my all-time favourite shows, so creepy and dark.

glittereyelash · 30/04/2025 18:53

A few I loved that were cancelled are hannibal, harlots, lie to me, alcatraz, red band society, Anne with an E and deadwood.

Gundogday · 30/04/2025 18:54

Turn up Charlie, with Idris Alba as a nanny (Netflix)

Trying - Apple TV - bitter sweet series but superb

Smichadoon (sp?) - Apple TV - popular in some circles. Brilliant series (please do series 3).

Gundogday · 30/04/2025 18:55

The Happy Apple - staring Lesley Ash

SydneyCarton · 30/04/2025 18:57

Crapston Villas, which was a stop motion animation series written by Sarah Kennedy (Miss Rabbit from Peppa Pig!) about characters living in a rundown block of flats in London. It was on Channel Four in the late 90s and I really enjoyed it but nobody else ever seems to have watched it!

FairlyFarleigh · 30/04/2025 19:05

Extras also very funny. I loved that they had a succession of A listers who were all absolute monsters on their fictional film sets. Ben Stiller was my favourite (WILL YOU STOP GOING ON ABOUT YOUR F*CKING DEAD WIFE!)

Mimn · 30/04/2025 19:06

Prisoner CBH. The early episodes of it are on My5. But couldn’t get on with Wentworth at all.

purpleme12 · 30/04/2025 19:06

I'm not sure why people are mentioning After Life or Extras on this thread

I'm pretty sure they were/are widely popular!

MyHappyGreenAnt · 30/04/2025 19:12

Alpha House - best American political drama/comedy there is. Got cancelled after a couple of seasons presumably because Americans didn't find it funny (not sanctimonious /partisan enough would be my guess).

CarpetKnees · 30/04/2025 19:14

Am loving this thread. Thanks @PoodlesRUs and everyone who has contributed.

I'm making a list of the ones I want to now go and look for.

icebearforpresident · 30/04/2025 19:46

I loved 2DTV! I loved it so much I had it on DVD - might still have it somewhere now you mention it.

toycat · 30/04/2025 19:54

Better Things - it's one of my all-time faves and I don't know anyone else who likes IRL
