'I don't shower every day'

When someone states they don't shower every day would you assume they are washing the important bits on the days they are not showering or would you think they are completely unwashed on those days?
Going off the BO wafting around in the shops yesterday I would assume most people are not washing inbetween showering!

You say that as if it is a bad thing?
If I am naturally smelly and you can't smell me because I shower daily and use an appropriate deodorant surely that's a win.

Or would you prefer to sit next to me for 8 hours in a hot and stuffy office when I hadn't showered for days or bothered with deodorant to mask my stench?

No not at all, its a good thing! I'm referring to the judgmental posters who say I do X if you don't do exactly as I do you must be disgusting. Everyone should do what they need to do to not smell, that might vary from person to person and that is OK.

These threads about not needing to shower daily and kids not needing bathed daily knock me ill. Just get showered/bathed daily. Use moisturisers and specific washes if ur skins dry. Too many ppl just cutting about stale and stinking, if ur children are not bathed daily teachers/other ppl can absolutely tell !!

AlteredStater · 27/04/2025 11:44

No shower here, only a bath. I take a bath every 4 to 5 days. I'm disabled so it's difficult more often. I wash under the arms or elsewhere if I'm sweaty or smell. You just have to adapt to what you can do sometimes. I'm very quick to notice if I smell!

No, I don't shower every day. Yes, I do wash under arms, under boobs, and genital area/bum every day (sometimes twice if it's been a busy day). I think having a bidet helps with that.

Isn’t is just easier to shower the entire body than do bits

Xwx1010 · 27/04/2025 11:50

I’m usually every other. I have oily hair/skin and have a desk job working from home. If I washed my hair every day it would be awful, my skin would be blotchy and given my job i just don’t feel it’s necessary. I don’t do much exercise and I don’t sweat much even in summer, I don’t smell and I don’t use deodorant, just a nice moisturiser and body mist/perfume. If I feel I need one every day then I will but usually i won’t.
I wash my face twice a day of course but honestly it’s totally unnecessary for me unless I’ve been out gardening or exercising or something.
not everyone’s lifestyle, body, skin and hair is the same so others may need to wash more.

I don’t shower everyday. I shower ‘most days’ but sometimes I’ll think I’ll
shower later then forget. So there’s probably one day a week I don’t. Usually when I’m at home all day so it doesn’t really matter.

I don’t think it’s a problem and I don’t think people smell for that. Not washing clothes regularly is more of a cause of general smells.

Mumsnet has bonkers standards though and there will also be someone who comes along saying they shower 3 times a day and wash their bedding every day etc

Yeah I'm the same and I definitely dont smell.... I check and my husband or mum would tell me.

But I think some people are more sweaty and depending on clothing worn, body weight, daily activity levels or temperature some people would be more sweaty and possibly smelly too.

Moier · 27/04/2025 11:51

Personally l think a quick shower every day is easier and quicker than having a sink wash with a flannel for pits and bits..
It can take about 2 mins.. in get wet... soap body .. rinse and out.
I don't understand why all the fuss.
Okay washing your hair might take longer.
I like feeling fresh all day.. sometimes my shower is 2 mins sometimes longer.

Jk987 · 27/04/2025 11:58

By the time you’ve washed all your bits you may as well have taken a shower. 2 mins is all it takes.

AllTheChaos · 27/04/2025 12:01

I wonder if part of the issue is what people’s clothes are made from now? With my DD, I’ve noticed that her ‘natural fibre’ clothes (eg cotton) can be worn for a couple of days before they begin to get whiffy, and she is an active child who gets sweaty! However with the clothes made of acrylic, polyester etc, after being worn for even just an afternoon they are starting to smell. Same with jumpers: wool jumper, fine even after a week; acrylic jumper, will need washing after one wear as it will smell bad.

This is nonsense. I do not shower daily. If I do, my skin gets sore. Putting more moisturizer on doesn't prevent that and it's unnecesary. When I went from washing hair daily to 2-3 times weekly, it became much healthier and I wasn't wasting so much hair product.

Sometimes I smell. Then I have a shower. It's not rocket science. If I wear artificial tops, my armpits smell. If it's hot, I smell. If I work out I am sweaty. In all of these circumstances, I have a shower. Otherwise, every other morning it is.

I'm aware that other people have more oily skin and need to shower more often. Some people do smell, but given they smell every day, showering more often doesn't seem to be the answer...

mondaytosunday · 27/04/2025 12:08

I think the lockdowns had people showering less frequently- I know I often showered every other day then. Now if I’m leaving the house I certainly shower. And I think older clothes smell too, even if washed once they get warmed up by your body they can smell.

Iggii · 27/04/2025 12:24

I don't want to go in the shower if I'm not washing my hair, it either gets wet or blows up like a mushroom. So sometimes will do the basin wash.
I think clothes often smell worse than people, the odours really live on in them.

So do I.

You can always smell stale clothes. I only wear things once before washing.

What I find worse though is when people over scent was washing, I find it over powering. I mean, better than stinking of dirt, but those plastic pellet things are overpowering.

I use soap nuts as I’ve turned into some sort of raging hippy in middle age, so my clothes smell clean but don’t have a scent.

By the time you’ve done all that, why don’t you just jump in the shower? Far easier and quicker!!!

NuffSaidSam · 27/04/2025 08:38

I haven't noticed an epidemic of smelly people. Sometimes someone who clearly has other issues is a bit whiffy. Or men on the tube home after a hot day. But most people smell fine.

Maybe I'm one of the smelly ones so I don't notice it?

Or maybe I live in a particularly clean area?

I agree and no, just don't shower every day either.

lunalovegood25 · 27/04/2025 12:43

I’m usually every other day but I WFH and use a bidet bottle after the toilet. Hair washed every 3-4 days
Usually get compliments that I smell nice
I I do wash though in the shower so bar soap and a flannel/net cloth and wash everything from in between toes to behind ears! Feels like I stay fresh for longer doing that

Lighttodark · 27/04/2025 11:45

That's subjective though. Maybe there are 3 people queueing for a shower. Maybe the water needs to run for a few mins before heating and this takes longer, maybe the bills are high and this way is cheaper, maybe the pump is noisy and will wake an ill family member or night shift worker, maybe the house is old and cold, and a full strip is too much and half and half is nicer. People do what suits them for their own reasons, there is no wrong or right

BatchCookBabe · 27/04/2025 13:01

It is gross, grim, and minging to not shower every day. The 'oh but I don't sweat or get grimy' brigade make me LOL. Yes you do. YES you DO!

BatchCookBabe · 27/04/2025 13:03

Also agree that it takes longer to wash bit, pits, and undertits than it does to hop in the shower! Completely daft having a flannel wash in the sink. Is it 1959?

MammaTo · 27/04/2025 13:10

I think it’s a combination of things. Sometimes I do forget to shower especially if LO’s bedtime runs late or what not. But if I was sleeping in smelly bedsheets that hadn’t been washed for weeks I’d probably smell a bit scanky. I wear clean clothes, underwear and fresh socks everyday, some people don’t. I think it’s a bigger issue then just personal hygiene.

Agree. Also the ones that say you must not wipe your bum properly if it needs a daily wash. Yes, we do but dry tissue is not the same as soap and water is it.

Yes. I get sweaty. Not so sweaty that you'd have the foggiest though. Laugh all you like, but I'm happy with my shower routine of every other day

Catsandcannedbeans · 27/04/2025 13:26

Depends, do they stink? If someone’s washing their important bits and maintaining good hygiene (deodorant, good oral hygiene…) then you don’t necessarily need to shower each day, especially if you’re not active, live in a cold climate, are hydrated and are eating well. I don’t know about other people, but when I’m eating properly I smell very different to when I’ve been on the beers and chips diet.

Waitingfordoggo · 27/04/2025 13:36

@ambercabs Future water shortages in the UK are a very real threat. The time to start mitigating against it is now, as it will be too late once the shortages actually start. You’re obviously free to do what ever you like in terms of showering, but a lot of us care about sustainability and precious resources.

I don't shower every day or wash in-between, except face and hands. But you'd never know because I always do if I'm leaving the house. I wfh and don't go out every day. Single so no sex smells! And no partner to offend. Don't really get people just dropping by. So any smell I do have isn't affecting anyone.

I personally find it more gross that people will shower then put worn clothes back on! A few in my family do this (I know from staying over). T shirts they've sweated in the day before, jeans that were last washed god knows when. I always have full clean clothes when I shower.

I know from a much loved, but sadly quite smelly relative, that sometimes the smell isn't coming from their bodies, it's coming from their clothes.

That last remark reminded me of the thread where the OP's little girl had told her she needed to wash her foof and it turned out to be her jeans that needed washing. (Apologies if OP is reading this, but it stuck in my mind! 😂)
