A thread for those who don’t have friends in real life.

Hi everyone,

I don’t know how to start this thread, so we’ll just go with being plain honest! I’m in my 30s and I don’t have any friends in real life! Of course I have acquaintances/people I can chat to if at certain events - but no real life friends 🙈

It’s really hard to feel accepted for who you are sometimes, and so many of us have to alter our personalities to try and fit into the work environment (or even to fit in with our families). So, I wanted to start a thread for all those who don’t have friends in real life. A place where people can come and leave updates on how their day has gone, how they are feeling, what their interests and hobbies are, and just have a good chat!

So, a little about me:
Im married and have a teenager.
I have a gorgeous cocker spaniel.
Ive almost (one year left) completed my degree in psychology and counselling.
I have just written my first children’s book and am currently in the process of self publishing it.
Im starting a new job in a school this Friday.

Please feel free to join and let’s keep this thread a safe place where we can (hopefully) begin to make some friends and not feel so alone. ❤️

Thank you, @deepermining ! I am even considering treating myself to either a very rare takeaway or a giant pudding when my days with the manager are over!

@BillieNoM888 I have no idea! That's why I am still persisting with learning Welsh. Are you fluent in the lovely language, or just very knowledgeable? I do know that there are a lot of borrowed words, though, especially swear words 😁

BillieNoM888 · 12/06/2025 19:17

I have a Welsh dictionary. It's only a little one. I have far too many books.
From what I understand, the swear words are blasphemous and they use borrowed swearwords like bloody and fuck.

Draignet might be of interest.

Uptoolateatnight · 13/06/2025 00:01

Can I join you all please? This is a lovely idea for a thread.

I often feel so sad that I don’t have anyone just to talk about ‘things’ with so it would be great to do that here.

deepermining · 13/06/2025 10:45

@BillieNoM888 and @TheeNotoriousPIG There is a book called the naughty little book of Gaelic, which is full of rude and swear words, and 'naughty' writing in Scots Gaelic. Its an attempt to keep these alive when most people who speak Gaelic now have learnt it as second language and are not taught these words.😀

@Uptoolateatnight Yes, I am always happy to talk about things! 😀😁

shadypines · 13/06/2025 15:16

Patchwork for a pet sounds good and am jealous you have the skill for jumpers @TheeNotoriousPIG Well done @deepermining you have my admiration.
Also TheeNotoriousPIG, do you want to get any examples off your chest about your manager, do you have any private nicknames for your own amusement!? I've had my fair share of horrible managers but all women, the only male managers I've had have been nice. @BillieNoM888 I'd love to see what a Welsh dictionary looks like, oh and there's no such thing as too many books, I love books (only not enough shelves perhaps?) @Uptoolateatnight , I know that sad feeling and sorry to hear you have it, welcome on here to talk about random 'stuff'!

In my youth I had a friend with a terrible boss. My friend's work password was 'bitch' followed by her boss's name. She lived in fear of being off sick and being phoned and asked her password so they could access her files 😁

BillieNoM888 · 13/06/2025 16:11

@shadypines , there is such a thing as too many books. I have duplicates and books that I probably will never open.

The one I have is a Welsh-English one but it's a small one. Geiriadur Bach, Y / Welsh Pocket Dictionary, The: Amazon.co.uk: Evans, H. Meurig, Thomas, W. O.: 9780953855421: Books but buy it from your local Welsh shop.

This is good but it only does English to Welsh.

There is definitely no such thing as too many books, only too little shelf-space on which to keep them! Clearly, I'm not the only one who needs to upgrade my living conditions to a house that is big enough for its own library... and a craft room... and some space for sheep, but maybe that last one is just me. I like sheep most of the time.

@deepermining I love that! If I used computers more often at work, that would definitely be my first choice of password!

@shadypines In terms of nicknames, the most common way to start a sentence about him is, "That fat, lazy, narcissistic/miserable <or insert adjective of choice> bastard". Someone advised me that, whenever he had irritated me, it was better for your psychological health to mentally say, "Fuck off, <manager's name>" and it helps... a bit! Personally, I prefer Fun Sponge or The Twat in the Hat (courtesy of that little voice that lives inside of my head, and says all of the things that cannot possibly come out of my mouth)😳

BillieNoM888 · 15/06/2025 12:26

@TheeNotoriousPIG ,there is definitely such a thing as too many books. I have several bookshelves, all heaving, plus boxes of books, a stack waiting to be sorted, and a pile waiting to go to the charity shop.
I have duplicates that I know of, but I need to find them.

If I am never going to refer to them, they'd be better off somewhere where someone else could.

deepermining · 15/06/2025 17:04

I have both too many books and no shelves at all! 😁

I also have too many clothes moths 😡Little bitey bastards. They've eaten holes in a really lovely vintage fitted wool jacket. And a vintage dress, interestingly right where my nipples would be. It reminds me of that scene in Mean Girls where they cut two holes out of Regina George's t-shirt 😄The moths are mocking me!

I've bought some sticky moth catchers that have caught a about half a dozen moths so far and some cedar wood rings that appear to be having no effect at all.

BillieNoM888 · 15/06/2025 17:08

I too have too many clothes and moths.
The cedar ring are useless. Lavender works.

Bunoflowers999 · 15/06/2025 17:50

I moved from abroad, married and have a daughter. Literally I meet friends in jobs but when leave get shy to contact them. Never made friends in churches

Yeah, I am bummed about the cedar rings - they weren't cheap and had really good reviews. I might try sanding them - they say they need sanding every two months, so maybe they have been in the box awhile. I'll rope the kids in one afternoon to help me out.

What lavender 'device' do you use?

Hello 👋

We went to the seaside for Fathers day. Was really nice, lovely sunshine , how did you spend yours ?

TheeNotoriousPIG · 15/06/2025 20:42

Hello, @Bunoflowers999 ! Welcome! I hope that the move went well. May I ask which countries you have been lucky enough to live in already? It is tricky to make new friends when you move to a new place, and churches aren't always the most friendly of places, unfortunately. Either way, I hope that you and your family are happily settled in your new area.

Books... well, there are so many interesting ones to read in the world! I admit that I have a few duplicates (like when I find a prettier edition, or when the book gets published under a different name), but I'm wondering where I might find someone who would appreciate the donation of my extra copy of The Compost Toilet Handbook...

I'm joining @deepermining 's club of "many books and no shelves at all"! (You can keep your bitey clothes moths, though, especially ones that have a penchant for the nipple area!). Shelves are on the shopping list (as are more books!), but I'm fussy about what I want. Unfortunately, my house's ceilings are not tall enough to accommodate a fantastic bookcase that I saw in an antique shop. Also, I'd need many bookcases to house my eclectic collection!

BillieNoM888 · 15/06/2025 20:44

@deepermining , lavender bags.

Bunoflowers999 · 15/06/2025 20:50

Hi, I lived in France before the UK
I'm lucky to find English companies staffed with all kinds of people and nationalities and this is where my social fix comes from ....

I am like this with work friends! I think it speaks of my lack of social skills generally but any time I have left a job, no matter how close I’ve been to the people I’ve worked with or how much I’ve liked them - I generally don’t speak to them again. I think it’s because I think they were only friends with me because we worked together.

Nice!

Did week 5 day 2 of Couch to 5k! Pleased with that. Went on nice walk with kids and then to pub, so that was good.

Thank you! I will have to source some.

I don't think this is your lack of social skills. I suspect its more that they genuinely like you, but they already have out of work friends and don't have time or need to fit another in. So its not so much your social skills but the practicalities of their own lives out of work.

Hi can I join this thread please. I'm 58, married, and got 2 adult kids. I do work so spend all day chatting but like it a bit quieter in the evenings lol. No best friends etc but plenty of work colleagues
