Food you don’t often see anymore

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Regularly make kedgeree it’s lovely!

We used to have faggots for dinner when we were kids growing up in the West Country (cheapo meatballs you would eat with mash and gravy) . Not sure they are allowed any more given the name.

Sometimes used to get a brand called Brains Faggots from the supermarket - blimey that sounds unappetising now. Loved them at the time….

I loved Brains Faggotts! 😀

Birds Eye hot crunch pudding (lived on this as a student)
Lea and Perrin Chilli and Garlic sauce.
the little blob of jam in the middle of rice pudding.
Home made rice pudding
chocolate sponge with mint custard.

Kedgeree is my signature dish!! Rice, Cod, Salmon, Smoked Haddock, Prawns, Turmeric, Baby Mushrooms, Sour Cream. Throw all that in the slowcooker and make enough to freeze. I usually eat one freshly cooked and freeze three.

I’d like to try this - do you add water?

Maybe it’s an East Midlands thing but theres bloody LOADS of jacket potato places around here, not that I’m complaining, they seem to be popular

Yeah..there is a nice one in Loughborough market place!

Lansonmaid · 23/04/2025 07:21

One of the puddings I remember from childhood was rice cremola. I think it was based on ground rice but very creamy, mum used to cook it with milk and served it with butter. Haven't seen it for years. Can you still get tinned mandarin oranges and tinned cream? My great gran used to serve them at tea time....
I also remember the Findus crispy pancakes, very upf I guess but I did have a soft spot for them. Saturday lunch treat, most of the food I remember from childhood was home cooked but that was an exception.

In my meat eating days we regularly had fried Spam for dinner, with homemade deep fried chips in lard and frozen peas. Makes my arteries twinge just thinking about it.

I was amazed to see it in the supermarket recently and wondered who was still buying it.

I'm partial to a Spam sandwich, with fresh tomatoes and HP sauce ( brown sauce). Just the job, now & again! 😋 I've got a can in the fridge at the minute!

Licorice Catherine wheels are becoming harder to find.

And pipes. They are virtually impossible to find!

Dripping! Used to have it on toast when my granddad bought it. Not seen it in a long time!

My mum always used to save the dripping after cooking beef and give it to us on toast sprinkled with salt. Weirdly one of the only things I missed when I became vegetarian at 13 (the other being fish finger butties).

Gammon with egg or pineapple and chips. It was my staple when going out to eat for a pub lunch (I was pretty fussy and unadventurous when younger). I know that you can still get it, but I can’t remember the last time I saw it on a menu!

as a child - those crispy pancake things. Birds Eye? They were vile. But a regular on our 70s/80s convenience food rotation when I was growing up.

You must be going to the wrong places OP! It’s always on the menu in pubs etc. where I live (West Wales). My husband always chooses it!!

Boil in the bag cod in parsley sauce
see the butter sauce version in supermarkets all the time but never the parsley! Which is the best

I saw it advertised at Farm Foods, can't really remember the brand, maybe Young's or Findus.

Oh I love these I stopped buying the frozen ones because they were the size of a fish flake, they look a bit more substantial.

Cuppateaanabicci · 23/04/2025 09:45

Pan-yan pickle - I remember and miss that lovely gingery flavour to this day 😋

Food you don’t often see anymore
Hoppinggreen · 23/04/2025 09:49

My Dad loved Pan Yan pickle, he refused to acknowledge any other pickles existed so despite my Mum buying Branston pickle all pickles were called Pan Yan pickle in our house.

HoppingPavlova · 23/04/2025 09:50

Boil in the bag fish

MissMarplesNiece · 23/04/2025 09:53

My sister phoned me up last night to ask if I could remember how my mum made rissoles. Haven't had those for years, does anyone still make them?

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 21/04/2025 12:07

I miss Spud U Like so much. There isn't one near me. I don't know if they even still exist

We had a Spud u Like in our town. I mostly remember them because that’s what Kathy Burke’s character’s baby (in Harry Enfield and Chums) was going to be called but pronounced Spud-oo-lickay to make it posh

Hangingonthere · 23/04/2025 10:28

I'm Scottish, and in the early 60s my parents ate potted head (I never found out more!) with mashed potatoes and veg, usually tinned peas. They were bought from the butcher in small tin moulds that were returned later. And tripe.
Instant whip. Individual meat pies in a hard white pastry case. In the early 70s whilst flat-sharing, Vesta dried curry, the height of sophistication!

Coffeeishot · 23/04/2025 10:34

@Hangingonthere we used to call it potted meat I have never heard it being called potted head 😳 My late Mil used to make it.

You could afford M&S as a student? Wow!

She said it was in the nineties. Prices have soared since then.
