Food you don’t often see anymore

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

I'm Scottish, and in the early 60s my parents ate potted head (I never found out more!) with mashed potatoes and veg, usually tinned peas. They were bought from the butcher in small tin moulds that were returned later. And tripe.
Instant whip. Individual meat pies in a hard white pastry case. In the early 70s whilst flat-sharing, Vesta dried curry, the height of sophistication!

I would hazard a guess that the potted head was either sheep’s or pig’s head, boiled, stripped down and potted with the resulting jelly ?

MissMarplesNiece · 23/04/2025 11:25

I love Angel Delight but loved Instant Whip even more. When I was a child I used to think that when I was a grown up I'd have Instant Whip every day.

I saw Vesta Chow Mein in Morrison's last week. That was another childhood favourite. I loved the crispy noodles. I'm going to buy a box next time I'm in the shop, for old times sake. Although going back to times remembered is usually a disappointment.

@Coffeeishot often the same meal, bread, rolls are called different things all over Scotland. But please satisfy my curiosity, what was in the potted meat?!

GardenersDelight · 23/04/2025 12:09

Sainsbury's and waitrose both sell bramley apple 🍏
The Gloucester service on M5 posh farm shop sometimes have inhouse made faggots, authentic recipe wrapped in caul like my gran used to make

Gooseberries, where are all the gooseberries?

exactly where are all the gooseberries? Likewise blackcurrants!

Aldi had some gooseberry yoghurts the other week that were absolutely delicious. I only managed to eat one of a four pack because DS11 had the rest.

I keep looking for them and can’t find them, but if you see them buy them. 10/10. Hoping it signals a gooseberry renaissance.

Morrisons do a gooseberry fool which is lovely, they used to be 3 for £1 but are much more expensive now, the apricot one is also very good.

I have a gooseberry bush in the messy part of my garden but I tend to forget about it, the fruit isn't as easy to see or pick, it's almost the same colour as the leaves and tends to grow under the leaves so a good pair of gloves is essential! I also have a red currant bush but if I leave the ripe berries for more that 12 hours the birds have them.

I used to love homepride potato bake- it was a jar of sauce that you pour over thinly sliced potatoes and bake, I miss it so much! Cheese and bacon was my favourite. I do a homemade one but it's not the same!

I would imagine that the lasagne sauce in jars which is quite cheap from Aldi/Lidl would work with maybe a bit of cheese and bacon lardons added.

I used to make a pasta dish with ( spinach, mushrooms, spring onions and) smoked salmon trimmings. I haven't seen smoked salmon trimmings for sale any more.

The supermarkets often have them but the best place would be a proper fishmonger, maybe on a market, I used to buy loads from Bolton fish market.

JudgeJ · 23/04/2025 13:14

roll mops, which l think are herrings. You couldn’t pay me to eat either !!

Roll mops are lovely and I miss the Brathering we used to get in Germany, hot in a bread roll, often as we left the supermarket or at a fair. The Christmas markets have huge vats of garlic mushrooms in a creamy sauce which I wish we had here although I don't go to the UK Christmas markets so maybe they do!

Mil made it with beef and marrowbone and onions. (I think) was a secret recipe I liked on toast.

Morrisons deli sell brawn. Never tasted it or wanted to taste it.

Can l ask, what is Brathering ? Sounds interesting. I’ve fond memories of touring Germany several years ago. Beautiful country and the food was great. I remember going to an outdoor concert and there were food stands dotted around. I had probably the best bratwurst l’ve ever tasted, served in a delicious warm roll with mustard on the side. I’ve never been able to find a mustard here in the UK that came anywhere near that taste.

Flowerpower70 · 23/04/2025 13:30

Morrisons deli still sell liver sausage, pork luncheon meat and ox tongue and pork tongue. And chopped pork. Remember you could get pork luncheon meat with stuffing or egg in the middle of it. Morrisons deli also sell sliced meats gammon etc but only lasts two days if nit frozen.

My sister phoned me up last night to ask if I could remember how my mum made rissoles. Haven't had those for years, does anyone still make them?

i think the recipes vary from region to region but i make rissoles from left over roast beef shredded up and mixed with chopped onion and enough seasoned mashed potato to bind into a patty, then egg and breadcrumbed and fried. My nan, however, used a mixture of minced beef, chopped onion, chopped fresh herbs fresh breadcrumbs, all bound together with an egg then formed into patties, sealed in a hot pan, then stewed in gravy.

We have both in the back garden - two varieties of gooseberries, green and red. When they ripen it’s a race to harvest them before the birds move in !!

Mixed grills seem to be relatively rare now.

Don't you just buy the ingredients and cook them together? Other than that a few chains sell mixed grills. Inc Harvester, Farmhouse Inns, Beefeater, etc etc etc

Thanks for the tip. I don't live in the area but I do visit family in Bolton from time to time. I will check out the fishmonger stall in the market next time I am there.

St Ivel gold. I remember being over in the uk mid 70s and my auntie had it on the table(to accompany the “proper” salad spread you gave visitors.) I just couldn’t stop eating it, it wasn’t marg, it wasn’t butter, I wasn’t sure I liked it.
And from the same time, Special K, but they were small and platelet shaped, very light and lovely.

I remember working for a company off the Old Kent Road in the early to mid 70’s when the product first came out. The owner gave me a pack and asked for my opinion as he thought it was awful and wouldn’t catch on! It may have disappeared now but it went on to be a hit.

I think I spotted bottled bratherring in the Polish fridge section of Asda the other day.
Nearby the bagged sauerkraut and herrings in dill sauce.

Unorganisedchaos2 · 23/04/2025 14:26

Corned beef hash with the corned beef completely mashed into the potato so it was a pale pink colour, stirred in onions and peas and topped with cheese - one of the few things that didnt come out of the chip pan though...

Trifle made with blamance (sp) instead of custard or just in a jelly mold or jelly made with evaporated milk.

Chicken mornay with chips, so fatty but delicious, my mum was convinced that using vegetable oil to fry something made it heathy 😅

Nearly the whole sunday dinner done the pressure cooker that everyone apart from my mum was terrifed of.

Apparently Branigans beef and mustard crisps and cheesy moments have been discontinued, gutted tbh ...

A Brathering is a roasted/grilled herring, just like a Bratwurst is a grilled sausage, problem is that now I feel very hungry!

Hope the fish stalls are still in operation and not taken over by chicken and/or frozen food, I used to love the smell of the fish market, even as a child in the 50s!

LittleBitofBread · 23/04/2025 14:35

I remember in the 80s, frozen bags of stir-fry on different 'themes' e.g. a Chinese one, possibly a Mexican one. We didn't have anything else remotely like them, and I thought they were wildly exotic and exciting. I remember being wowed by the water chestnuts in the Chinese one Grin
