Food you don’t often see anymore

1000 replies

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Our local fishmonger has jellied eels and roll mops, which l think are herrings. You couldn’t pay me to eat either !!

Love a rollmop. These are the best I've found: https://orkneyfoodcompany.co.uk/ I found them in the M5 Gloucester Farm Shop Service Station (I don't work for them).

Jellied eels are a bit more niche, but super. Maybe you'd prefer a bit of smoked eel with horseradish sauce, lettuce and decent bread? www.pinneysoforford.co.uk/product/smoked-sliced-eel/

Plus, may I ask, why wouldn't you try them? This apparent dislike towards so much food upsets me when it looks like people haven't actually tried it. (Apologies if you have.)

Never see blackberry jam. Lots of blackcurrant jam but never blackcurrant.
Kumquats never see them anymore.

On a Saturday my dad used to buy pigs' trotters from the butcher and boil them, cool them, debone them whilst watching the wrestling on the telly, and then serve them up with vinegar and white pepper.

He also used to buy live eels and make jellied eels.

🤢

I’ve tried rollmops and just didn’t like them, but l have to confess it’s definitely the look of jellied eels that puts me off. I’ve never actually got as far as trying them.

Some Waitrose have Deli counters

Morrisons still have deli counters for now.
In my local store but it was very bare

I remember it! I had the strawberry flavour but I don't think it had much to do with strawberries.

It used to froth up when you poured it out and it had a kind of milky look to it. And you’re right, it tasted really synthetic !!

CarCrashLifes · 22/04/2025 22:04

Boil in the bag cod in parsley sauce
see the butter sauce version in supermarkets all the time but never the parsley! Which is the best

No fruit and vegetables shops in my my hometown. So never see Bramley Apples anymore for baking. Or gooseberries.

The only supermarket that seems to stock Bramleys these days is Tesco. I managed to get some for an apple pie over Easter, but you can’t always get them and other varieties just don’t work as well. We have gooseberries and blackcurrants in our back garden but you have to be quick harvesting because the birds love them !!

Fair enough for rollmops. They're sour (but full of oily fish goodness.)

Jelled eels are actually very meaty fish. (ignore the jelly if that doesn't do it for you.) Even men (NAMALT) can admit they like them.

Otherwise, the Chinese or the French cook eels beautifuly. Hard friend eels are wonderful. Served with garlic'n'parsley or garlic'n'parsley'n'coriander'n'chilli depending.

Frozen orange juice concentrate. I remember in the 80s having orange juice where you emptied a frozen plastic "can" of concentrate (with bits) in a jug and topped it up with water. Wish you could still get it... in the UK.

Flowerpower70 · 22/04/2025 22:12

How lovely. I'd love to have a garden with gooseberries and blackberries. I look for Bramley apples next time I go shopping. Fingers crossed. They don't seem to come to the tesco here. I've asked a.few tines but last time I asked the grocery tesco worker looked bamboozled when I asked and said there is Braeburn but not bramley like I was mistaken. Others go mushy on me and not the same.

I was going to say boil in the bag meals. DH asked for boil in the bag beef stew last week. He asked me to buy him boil in the bag beef stew and dumplings. I said I will make it at weekend but he said the boil in the bag stew was nicer.

I used to make a pasta dish with ( spinach, mushrooms, spring onions and) smoked salmon trimmings. I haven't seen smoked salmon trimmings for sale any more.

I loved them too

LivelyMintViper · 22/04/2025 22:45

Sainsbury's potted meat
smoked breakfast sausage
Chelsea buns

Flowerpower70 · 22/04/2025 22:51

I have never tried liver or tripe. Don't see or hear of it nowadays. Morrisons butcher counter is the only butcher in town now. No independent fruit and vegetables shops. Only a bakery. Shame and sad

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 22/04/2025 23:07

Blancmange used to be a weekend staple in our house and marrow. Does anyone even eat marrow anymore?

We love courgettes but they’re freely available these days, wheras you don’t see marrow as often in supermarkets. I’ve tried cooking it and have attempted various stuffed marrow recipes but it somehow always manages to turn out watery and tasteless.

I’d have boiled it in the bag and emptied it over his head !!

Me too! They did the best jackets. I mean where else could you eat jacket potato and garlic bread!

I’m sure Spud U Like is still about in a few places. I think James Martin bought the chain a few years ago?

My friend's mum cooked/poached chicken in a white creamy sauce that had small green grapes added just before it was served (with rice). It would be a good main for a retro dinner party.
We often make kedgeree, and smoked salmon kedgeree at Christmas.

one of my aunties used to make that! I had a full on memory of her lovely dining room when I read your post.

Sago! For sago pudding!

I found some of these in the world food section of Morrisons the other week so someone somewhere in the world still makes them! They were fab.

Yes, Lemon Puff Biscuits… Morrisons World foods section, Caribbean I think, and can also be found in the biscuits section on the bottom shelf usually iro £1.20 / pack.
B@M also do them but different make tho. Delish!!
Spam is still just as tasty on the softest brown or white bread, butter and brown Daddies or HP fruity sauce. Yum.

Tinned apple slices from Sainsburys make a good quick crumble and retain their firmness.
