Food you don’t often see anymore

1000 replies

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

She used to cut it into strips about an inch wide, soak it in salt water for a couple of hours and after rinsing off it would go into a dish with thinly sliced onions and covered with white vinegar. She’d cover it and let it sit in the fridge overnight to ‘cook’. The thought of it still makes me shudder !!

Thanks so much. Loving this thread.

Here's everything you need to know about tripe from an influencer who admits he hates it: https://yorkblog.com/wandering/tripe-butcher-meat-industry-cow-stomach/

My favourite bit was: "Late 19th century fashionistas found other uses for tripe. An 1892 article in The Gazette reported that a leather shop tanned tripe, creating a glossy black material softer and thinner than kid (baby goat) or chamois (a goat antelope animal in Europe) skin."

Pickling tripe: Eating cow's stomach an acquired taste, definitely - Wandering in York County

Tripe is a centuries old tradition to many York Countians. But, even after multiple tastings, I still find it inedible.

They seem to be doing fine in many, many countries still though.

Some Waitrose have Deli counters

Suet steak puddings I've not seen one in years even our chip shops stopped doing them

I make a mean steak and kidney suet pudding, loads of onions, mushrooms as well as the meat. Preferably with a rich beer gravy. Making me hungry just thinking about it

Cress. You used to be able to buy little punnets of cress from the salad section in most supermarkets. Where have they gone?!

Anyone remember the drink ‘Cresta’. A polar bear advertised it - the catchphrase was ‘ it’s frothy man’ !! Came in a few flavours -all vile !!

I remember it! I had the strawberry flavour but I don't think it had much to do with strawberries.

TW. I hesitate to post this, but... https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/essential-salad-cress/086407-44112-44113

"a blend of rape and cress seedlings grown with care for the environment by farmers who share our values" FWR?

All the local towns by me have jacket potato food trucks, I thought it was quite on trend nowadays

I'm partial to a Costco one now and again

Canadian Costcos don't have these! I would kill for a good spud.

Still can buy cress. Need to visit one of the main 4. Not Aldi or Lidl. 37-42p. At my last job, it was next to the cucumbers.

@Lovelysausagedogscrumpy

Thanks for the detailed recipe. I'm going to try them! Well, one.

Squirrelandnuts · 22/04/2025 21:31

@ChompandaGrazia I do. Love it, so does my 25yr old son.

Also, like Liver, bacon and onions.

I was talking about the time some friends and I found some money as a child in the 90s. We spent the lot on lemon Vienneta.

What happened to those? I could still smash one.

Lemon Vienetta 😮 😮 How on earth did I miss that beauty??!! That sounds immense 😋 😋

There’s one in the White rose shopping centre in Leeds

I used to love a cheap ready meal, not sure where from, I think most supermarkets did a version...it was chicken and mushrooms in a creamy sauce and white rice, I was obsessed with it and ate it all the time! It was boil in the bag 😀

Birds Eye Chicken Supreme?

CharlesPetrescu · 22/04/2025 21:39

I used to make a pasta dish with ( spinach, mushrooms, spring onions and) smoked salmon trimmings. I haven't seen smoked salmon trimmings for sale any more.

Squirrelandnuts · 22/04/2025 21:39

@RubiesAndRaindrops
Loved Tutti Frutti ice-cream, still search for it. Much better than Rum and Raisin.
Also, Mint Vienneta

Growing your own is easy too, The supermarket cress is bland but if you sow a mix of mustard seeds and cress you get a much more peppery version. Just line a plastic container with damp kitchen towel and sprinkle on mustard seeds. Keep moist but not soaked and place on a windowsill. Cress grows faster than the mustard seed so leave for a couple of days before sprinkling on some cress seeds for an even harvest.

No fruit and vegetables shops in my my hometown. So never see Bramley Apples anymore for baking. Or gooseberries.

SingleAHF · 22/04/2025 21:42

On a Saturday my dad used to buy pigs' trotters from the butcher and boil them, cool them, debone them whilst watching the wrestling on the telly, and then serve them up with vinegar and white pepper.

He also used to buy live eels and make jellied eels.

SingleAHF · 22/04/2025 21:44

When I was in my teens it was considered the height of sophistication to invite a girlfriend round for a Vesta Curry and a glass of Babycham.

CyanMaker · 22/04/2025 21:45

TheHistorian, I wouldn't buy it but I've noticed in our U.S. stores they've come up with different flavors like bacon, maple, turkey and smoked. In my country it used to be a joke except in Hawaii where it is quite popular.

Sadworld23 · 22/04/2025 21:49

Black Forest .Gateaux will always be my favorite dessert I think

Lemon Vienetta 😮 😮 How on earth did I miss that beauty??!! That sounds immense 😋 😋

It was lush, but it was discontinued in the 1990’s, as was the whole range of Vienetta. It made a comeback in 2021 but sadly the range doesn’t include the lemon variety. I think B&M sell it - four flavours. Original vanilla, salted caramel, birthday cake and mint chocolate.

In my meat eating days we regularly had fried Spam for dinner, with homemade deep fried chips in lard and frozen peas. Makes my arteries twinge just thinking about it.

I was amazed to see it in the supermarket recently and wondered who was still buying it.

The only person I've seen buying spam was a Morrisons butcher with six tins of spam in his basket last month! Fresh meat on the counter yet chose spam instead.

Remember the Vesta chow mein with those plastic looking bits you chucked into hot oil and they foamed up like prawn crackers ? Happy days !!
