Food you don’t often see anymore

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Bilberries are so much nicer than blueberries, spent hours when I lived near moors picking them, takes ages to get enough for a pie. Utterly yummy though.

Skyelils · 22/04/2025 19:24

No they’re different to blueberries

I’ve not eaten meat for nearly 20 years, so that probably has something to do with it, but I feel like I never see ocean pie anywhere now, or prawn cocktail on menus.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/04/2025 20:10

My gran used to make a great meat and potato pie that involved stewed steak , mash potato and a shortcrust top and bottom - a total carb fest but was delicious

My mum used to make stuffed hearts.

and no I didn’t eat them! 🤢

My Auntie used to make these. They were lamb hearts, trimmed and stuffed with sage and onion stuffing then braised whole in onion gravy. You missed a treat - they were delish !!

I’m very jealous you could afford M&S as a student.

When I was at uni I lived on pasta, baked beans and grated cheese!

The thought of it now makes me feel a little sick.

What’s this student thing with grated cheese? Smother everything with grated cheese

Ohhhh baguette du mond used to do a cracking cheese and pineapple jacket potato!!

in fact, where did they go??

Wouldprefertobereading · 22/04/2025 20:51

I’m in the north east and remember Greggs meat slices, little squares of mince pie which I used to have with beans and bread and butter for lunch when I came home from school.
I’d love to have another one of those but it’s probably 45 years since they discontinued them..

Dream Topping?

We used to have fake cream topping on desserts at (boarding) school.
i think it was called Roselle or Rosellie. Horrible stuff.

I bought a tin couple of years ago £5 a tin .. major disappointment but at five quid a tin I used it.

Sad, isn't it?

Was it this lot? Those tins don't look the same and I only remember the two flavours... https://www.treasureislandsweets.co.uk/novelty-sweets/CREM003.html

I blame low GI diets and people who say things like "if you eat a jacket potato for you'll have a blood sugar spike and then crash". Nope, I'll just feel nice and full for ages with a good 5g of fibre in it!

Awaywiththefairies078 · 22/04/2025 20:56

Trio chocolate bar- loved those

Findus crispy pancake- the mince one ( still see the cheese one around )

Xmasxrackers · 22/04/2025 20:58

Deli counters were wasteful in food. Open up a block of cheese and that had to be sold within x days. Same went for cooked meats. In some supermarkets, they were making losses - wastage was more than sales.

People forget that cooked meats freeze very well if wrapped up.

They seem to be doing fine in many, many countries still though.

MoonWoman69 · 22/04/2025 21:03

Brains Faggots are nothing like when I was a kid, they're mushy and taste awful!
My mum shopped at M & S a lot when I was a kid and I remember her buying us their lemon syllabub. It was gorgeous. Haven't seen that there or anywhere since!
Also gooseberry fool.

Oooh, I'm interested. I'm looking at lamb hearts in my nearest decent butcher's and wondering what to stuff them with. Sage, onion and what? Rice? Breadcrumbs? Pasta?

Like the braising whole thing too... (I like lamb. Not everyone does. My late father used to complain that Americans didn't really serve lamb in restaurants when he was there for work.)

Regularly make kedgeree it’s lovely!

We used to have faggots for dinner when we were kids growing up in the West Country (cheapo meatballs you would eat with mash and gravy) . Not sure they are allowed any more given the name.

Sometimes used to get a brand called Brains Faggots from the supermarket - blimey that sounds unappetising now. Loved them at the time….

Faggots is a Welsh meal, and they are still eat here in Wales, and still called faggots

She passed on her method to me. For four hearts. Auntie used packet Paxo sage and onion stuffing made up with an added a bit of chopped fresh sage and chopped fresh onion sautéed in butter. Pack it into the lamb hearts and secure the top with a cocktail stick to keep the stuffing in. Then fry the hearts in a casserole dish, in a bit of butter with olive oil until they’re browned on all sides, take them out and add a large finely chopped onion to the pan juices. When it softens stir in a tablespoon of plain flour and cook out, then add some beef stock until you have the consistency you like. Season to taste and put the hearts back in with the juices that have drained off, cover and braise in the oven for about an hour to an hour and a half, depending on size.
