Food you don’t often see anymore

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

They still do lemon puff biscuits & blamange & crispy pancakes, I remember as a kid & nobody else does but sunpat (who do the peanut butter) did cheese spread in a brown jar, I’m sure my grandparents used to have but nobody else remembers! Sara Lee chocolate gateau was a fave growing up. Used to be able to get Lipton iced tea in cans but it was fizzy, I miss toast toppers though. My mum used to do vol au vents with egg & salad cream, cos she wasn’t very adventurous with food back in the 80’s when we had little tea parties.

Cadbury spira - still sad you can’t get them and haven’t been able to for years

Lovelysausagedogscrumpy · 22/04/2025 18:24

One thing that did surprise me recently was how much a Curly Wurly has shrunk !! I hadn’t seen one for years until my young nephew recently visited. I remember them as huge and taking ages to get through and now l can’t decide whether they’ve got smaller or it’s just that l’ve got bigger !!

I used to love homepride potato bake- it was a jar of sauce that you pour over thinly sliced potatoes and bake, I miss it so much! Cheese and bacon was my favourite. I do a homemade one but it's not the same!

The loss of deli counters (as well as butcher and fish ones) in UK is a sad thing.
I so enjoy it when I visit my or DH's family abroad and can do "can you do just like 15 thick slices of that please?", "oh that's new, can I taste please?", "Just the small tub of this please. No, the medium is bit too much, can't eat that much quickly"
Just perfect amounts
(same for bakery and fruit and veg per piece)

Deli counters were wasteful in food. Open up a block of cheese and that had to be sold within x days. Same went for cooked meats. In some supermarkets, they were making losses - wastage was more than sales.

People forget that cooked meats freeze very well if wrapped up.

Cadbury spira - still sad you can’t get them and haven’t been able to for years

I used them as straws for chocolate milk

YouCantHandleTheRuth · 22/04/2025 18:36

Kedgeree is my signature dish!! Rice, Cod, Salmon, Smoked Haddock, Prawns, Turmeric, Baby Mushrooms, Sour Cream. Throw all that in the slowcooker and make enough to freeze. I usually eat one freshly cooked and freeze three.

YouCantHandleTheRuth · 22/04/2025 18:39

As far as ready cooked brand names are concerned, I so miss Sara Lee puddings. They used to do a Chocolate Danish Loaf - delicious hot with ice cream. Also their Pecan Danish Pie was to die for. And for good old staples, no other brand of Lemon Meringue Pie comes close to the SL classic.

Anyone remember the drink ‘Cresta’. A polar bear advertised it - the catchphrase was ‘ it’s frothy man’ !! Came in a few flavours -all vile !!

Yes! The bear was on an iceberg and wearing sunglasses I think?

I remember my dad eating jellied eels & rollmops quite regularly, they made me feel quite nauseous. Can you get them anywhere still?

Ooh, I've never come across pickled tripe! (I've eaten nicely cooked tripe in France, and a disgusting reheated tin of it when camping oop North, which would have been in the early 80s.)

She used to cut it into strips about an inch wide, soak it in salt water for a couple of hours and after rinsing off it would go into a dish with thinly sliced onions and covered with white vinegar. She’d cover it and let it sit in the fridge overnight to ‘cook’. The thought of it still makes me shudder !!

Bartonzam · 22/04/2025 18:43

Princess cake aka festival gateau

Our local fishmonger has jellied eels and roll mops, which l think are herrings. You couldn’t pay me to eat either !!

GardenersDelight · 22/04/2025 18:49

You can still get tinned cream and blancmange powder
Does anyone remember another powdered orange juice drink " birds apeel" not sure how much orange was actually in it!

Spud U like is now operated by James Martin. Not many branches but google will let you know where to find them. Spud Bros in Preston have taken over the family Spud cart that has been on the family, and trading for 70 years, and have turned it into a tik tok phenomenon. Mr Beast (whoever he is) was there this weekend and the queue started in the early hours.

Was crazy, I timed my one trip a year into there badly!

Newoxonbird · 22/04/2025 18:50

You can still get Brains Faggots.
They were not very nice.
Nowhere near as good as they used to be.

I’m very jealous you could afford M&S as a student.

When I was at uni I lived on pasta, baked beans and grated cheese!

The thought of it now makes me feel a little sick.

Marmite crisps

They’re the same family but bilberries are smaller, darker and have red flesh, whereas blueberries have white flesh.

I saw them in the freezer cabinet in Aldi today.

Elle2018 · 22/04/2025 19:17

My mum used to make stuffed hearts.

and no I didn’t eat them! 🤢

skyscrapersinging · 22/04/2025 19:17

Tapioca. Or sago pudding. Kind of like frog spawn. I used to make a face about it as a kid, but secretly quite like it.

GeraldineGrainger · 22/04/2025 19:17

Yes, delicious. 😋
