Food you don’t often see anymore

1000 replies

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Very long spaghetti! Not the stuff that’s like 30cm long, more like 50-60cm. Where has that gone?

They cut the trees down, despite Richard Dimbleby's best effort to save them.

I realised the other day that I haven’t seen Sara Lee pastries in a while. The frozen pecan Danish was lush!

@Lovelysausagedogscrumpy your grans jelly mousse sounds the same. I seem to remember it used to separate out a bit, so the top was quite bubbly with a slightly heavier bottom layer.

Yep, that’s the one !!

Mixed grills seem to be relatively rare now.

What abut tandoori mixed grills? My local Indian used to do these, and when I was younger I could actually eat all that meat. Not any more... <sniff>

prelovedusername · 21/04/2025 20:17

Bit niche this but Sosmix. I think it may have been banned but it was great for camping trips. Haven’t found a decent alternative. Who doesn’t love a reconstituted vegetarian sausage?

Tesco used to sell packs of small vol au vent cases before Christmas every year (and I would buy loads and fill them with all sorts before my New Year party) but they stopped a couple of years ago. Tbf, I also stopped holding New Year's parties. Amazon sell little pastry cases , but they're expensive and not the same.

Jus rol puff pastry. Roll it out slightly thicker than you would for a pie and cut out circles with a scone cutter. Then with the smallest cutter you can find stamp out the middle of each circle not quite all the way through. Bake them and then when they’ve cooled pull out the middle bit and you have the centre to fill. Sounds like a faff but it’s worth it.

Anyone remember Aztec bars ?

Oh my god. This ten fold. I need this in my life

When I was at school (a looooooong time ago !!) we used to get hot chocolate sponge cake covered with pink custard. I actually think it was blancmange powder made up to be a pouring consistency but it was fab.

Tripe. Thank goodness. And sweetbreads.
Pig’s head. Tongue. Brawn.

Faggots were a delight in comparison- we had local butcher ones, really good. Oh and oxtail.

Great to see people reminiscing about faggots. I loved them. No idea where my mother got them.

Nowadays, in the best farm shop in the UK (officially - it won a prize: https://www.dartsfarm.co.uk/) you can have a SMALL plate in their restaurant:

VEAL FAGGOT | 12
Bubble & Squeak, Caramelised Shallot

Their butcher's counter also sells oxtail, various sorts of kidneys/liver, lamb's hearts, etc. Rabbit out the back. Wagyu beef front and centre. (I don't work for them.)

Birdseye Potato Waffles?
Waffly versatile.

Findus crispy pancakes, that’s what they were. Similar era to the waffly versatile waffles though.

EternalFogInMyNotSoSpoltlessMind · 21/04/2025 20:32

Evaporated milk on all puddings. I hated it.

Has anyone mentioned Ice Magic? Sauce that you squeezed onto ice cream and it was supposed to set hard. (We always put the dish back in the freezer to make sure)

I love ice magic! they still sell it here in Australia 😊❤️

Lovelysausagedogscrumpy · 21/04/2025 20:33

OK I’m really going back now. Sweets - Penny Arrow Bars, Black Jacks, Fruit Salad, sherbet dabs (a tube of sherbet with either a lollipop for dipping or a liquorice ‘straw’ to suck it through. White chocolate mice, ‘flying saucers’ - coloured rice paper saucer shaped confections filled with sherbet. Coconut mushrooms and proper cough candy which came in big jars and was sold in paper bags.

There is still a version of crispy pancakes, but sadly they don’t do the minced beef ones any more.

Sweet ‘tobacco’ - think it was coloured and sweetened coconut strands. And similarly sweet cigarettes. Wouldn’t see the light of day now !!

The paper chocolate cigarettes, peel the paper off and eat the chocolate stick inside.

Where have the green lasagne sheets gone? My dad always used to make lasagne with with them, as did I.

One by one, the supermarkets stopped stocking them. I bought a job lot from Waitrose, but even they've stopped now. And our local Italian deli says 'no'. I've seen them online but it makes it a super expensive way to make a pasta dish.

Sadly, to me, lasagne looks just a bit insipid and flabby with yellow pasta.

There’s one called Bio Ide available from Amazon. It’s around £7 a pack - quite expensive but you do get quite a bit.

I’d forgotten all about those - brings back memories !!

Bags of Gold. Little yellow pieces of chewing gum shaped like gold nuggets. Came in a drawstring bag. God I’m old !!

IWanderedLonely · 21/04/2025 20:44

Wetherspoons have steak and kidney pudding on their menus, it's baked not steamed so not as soggy as the old school ones, but still good.
Corned beef hash is one of our favourite campervan meals as I used tinned everything & it only takes 10 minutes & 1 pan.

Findus used to make a pizza that was on one half of a baguette. It was as hard as rocks, rather like trying to eat a chandelier and used to leave you with a sore mouth.

My mother recently gave me a tin of chicken supreme, which I had on toast. I was immediately catapulted back to the 1970s!

Along the same lines M&S used to do something called chipped beef. It was small pieces of beef in a supreme sauce with mushrooms. Heavenly on toast. That’s just reminded me. Are Heinz toast toppers still going ?

They're still available.

I was quite partial to a Bernard Matthews Turkey Drummer. With waffles and beans preferably

Peach Angel Delight.Not strawberry,chocolate or butterscotch.Circa 90s

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 21:09

Is chicken supreme similar to chicken fricassee? We used to have that for school dinners.
