Food you don’t often see anymore

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Lemon Puff biscuits can be bought at Farm foods.

We used to have tinned golden plums with tinned sterilised cream as a treat pudding - you don’t see either now. The plums were super soft and tart. Loved them. I can remember having to shake the tin of cream really hard to make sure it homogenised and then it would be slightly grainy and a bit grey from the tin. It was still lush.

We used to have boil in the bag roast beef as an after school treat which came in a gravy and was far better than my mums terrible cooking. I loved it. Along with cod in butter sauce. Mostly with smash but she did sometimes make cheese and potato pie instead. Always frozen peas.

Pink custard on school dinner puddings.

Oh my god. This ten fold. I need this in my life

@Lovelysausagedogscrumpy your grans jelly mousse sounds the same. I seem to remember it used to separate out a bit, so the top was quite bubbly with a slightly heavier bottom layer.

Ethel chocolate desserts called ‘Lovely’. Had a tiny swirl of cream on the top. They were frozen like the super mouse mentioned up tread. I loved them and could never wait for them to defrost!

also the crispy yellow noodles that you deep fried and they curled up!

Chocolate Lovely's! Yes. I think we ate them for years before we realised they were meant to be defrosted.

We tried it once...

Where have the green lasagne sheets gone? My dad always used to make lasagne with with them, as did I.

One by one, the supermarkets stopped stocking them. I bought a job lot from Waitrose, but even they've stopped now. And our local Italian deli says 'no'. I've seen them online but it makes it a super expensive way to make a pasta dish.

Sadly, to me, lasagne looks just a bit insipid and flabby with yellow pasta.

Ice magic :)

Redlightbulb · 21/04/2025 19:44

These have probably already been mentioned.
I am 40 and remember these being more popular as a kid.

Blancmange
Trifle
Vol-au-vents
Cheese & pineapple sticks
Angel delight
Semolina

I also remember the old mars bar before the mucked around with the recipe.
It was really stodgy but yummy and every now and again I wish I could have one again!

chaosmaker · 21/04/2025 19:46

Also Chef brand tinned beans and sausages. The sausages in those were lovely, Also miss Macintosh chocolates and toffee. Got sold to the evil that is nestle and like Cadbury the recipes are nowhere near as good.

OhWhistle · 21/04/2025 19:46

I've been inspired to make a cheesy potato pie for dinner

gmgnts · 21/04/2025 19:49

Tesco used to sell packs of small vol au vent cases before Christmas every year (and I would buy loads and fill them with all sorts before my New Year party) but they stopped a couple of years ago. Tbf, I also stopped holding New Year's parties. Amazon sell little pastry cases , but they're expensive and not the same.

Rise and shine! Bloody loved that.
McVitie’s Golden Crunch. They only do cream ones now and dh is sad.
Pork Chops with kidney in (I I know, regulations. But if I sweet talk our butchers he’ll cut a couple)
All of Thornton’s continentals and boxes of special toffee.

Loved pork chops with kidney. Always used to argue with my brother as to who got the kidney.
I've never thought to ask a butcher!

SplodgePocket · 21/04/2025 19:54

Has anyone mentioned Ice Magic? Sauce that you squeezed onto ice cream and it was supposed to set hard. (We always put the dish back in the freezer to make sure)

ThePineappleSeahorse · 21/04/2025 19:55

Mixed grills seem to be relatively rare now.

They aren’t supposed to. It’s like getting contraband.

gino ginelli ice cream from a-italia ! at least I think that's how it was spelt. still sing that song to myself every now and then 😂

I love breast of lamb. A fatty, historically cheap cut.

Tesco used to do it but haven't for a few years - at least in my area. I buy it now from online butchers where it is cheap for a lamb joint but certainly not a 'cheap cut' anymore.

As a child of the 80s I loved those cheap frozen mousses in pots that came in a stack? Raspberry ripple or chocolate though I doubt either had much of those ingredients in. I haven't seen them in years.

I’ve just had lamb breast for tea! Bought reduced in Sainsbury’s. £2.79 I think but nearly £8 originally.
i cooked it rolled for three hours, then sliced it into rounds and cooked on high til crisp. Drizzled in mint sauce as it rested. Served in flatbread with tzatziki and salad. Was Devine 🤤

HalloweenGrinch · 21/04/2025 19:59

I think perhaps the west country small-town Sainsbury's near me is still in the past. We have packet blancmange, angel delight, dream topping, flan bases, tinned blackcurrants and lychees, ice magic (though it is not the same).

No longer spaghetti though! My mum still uses her jar.

I remember my mum demonstrating how a heart worked by holding and squeezing a beef (?) one under a running tap.

Often get turnpis from riverford (unfortunately, I still don't like them) and samphire, previously mentioned. I bought samphire to grow, but let it dry out over the winter and it died sadly. Riverford also do apples that taste of something- though apple growers locally can't get rid of them.

Not sure the 80s were haute cuisine but there was lots of real food in there too. Don't really ever remember eating snacks other than the 10p mix bought with leftover lunch money.

I grew up in the home of Macintosh and lots of school friends parents worked there and had huge boxes of misshapes at home.
My parents had more white collar jobs and I wished they would give them up and go and work in the factory!!!

@HalloweenGrinch 😍 This is wonderful!

In the 90s I was quite partial to a rectangular piece of boil in the bag fish ready prepared with parsley sauce 😫

I miss veggie burgers you made just by adding an egg to a mixture. H&B stocked them but dont anymore, just like they now dont stock vegetable pate...

Real Eat!!! They were amazingly good. I used to fry them up, then chop them into little bits to make spag bol for my veggie friends. Far, far better than Quorn mince.

I bought some recently for DH when he had to have a very restricted diet pre colonoscopy. It was nothing like the boil in the bag of old. Tiny 2in square of tough grey fish cartilage. Disgusting.
