Food you don’t often see anymore

1000 replies

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

My sister & I were lucky despite us being born in the 60's and our mother having grown up in a very traditional Yorkshire household that only ate very English food.
She rebelled and went very ethnic hippy so we had the most diverse range of foods that most of our friends were in awe of. I also think it stood both of us in good stead as we still send each other interesting recipes of things we have cooked (along with tweak notes).
Sure both of us did the Findus crispy pancake routine when we were students but the love of cooking is still something we both thank our dear departed mother for teaching us.
Though the other night we were talking and almost simultaneously said “You know what I really fancy some butterscotch Angel Delight” 😂

Real Eat!!! They were amazingly good. I used to fry them up, then chop them into little bits to make spag bol for my veggie friends. Far, far better than Quorn mince.

Thank you, I'll try them!!!

Great to see people reminiscing about faggots. I loved them. No idea where my mother got them.

Nowadays, in the best farm shop in the UK (officially - it won a prize: https://www.dartsfarm.co.uk/) you can have a SMALL plate in their restaurant:

VEAL FAGGOT | 12
Bubble & Squeak, Caramelised Shallot

Their butcher's counter also sells oxtail, various sorts of kidneys/liver, lamb's hearts, etc. Rabbit out the back. Wagyu beef front and centre. (I don't work for them.)

This is very near me. Their restaurant is VERY disappointing, faggots or no faggots. And the owners are widely detested (and not just cause they are rich).

I had a post banned on FB years ago for saying faggots. I meant the bundles of sticks, not the food, but I appealed in vain.

Someone mentioned jelly mouse - I swear my mum used to whisk cooling jelly and angel delight together to make a moussey jelly. I wonder if I imagined that.

Is chicken supreme similar to chicken fricassee? We used to have that for school dinners.

A fricassee is a like a stew where the meat is cooked lightly without browning and finished in a white sauce. A supreme is a cut of chicken which is pan-fried or baked.

Oh no! I've never eaten there (I just buy from their butcher's counter.) but literally today I suggested to friends we consider the restaurant when they're next down. Will mention this. Or can you recommend a good veggie restaurant?

Also, as you're local, do you prefer Greendale? I do as they have a proper wet fish counter. Which is another food option that's far rarer these days...

Talapia · 21/04/2025 21:29

All the miAll the homemade milk puddings..My favourite was macaroni. We also had rice pudding, semolina, tapioca and sago.

Dinners I don't miss, pigs liver and bacon. Fried spratts, cockles, winkles. Plain boiled potatoes. Rabbit pie, game pie.

My mum didn't approve of convenience food, however I remember liking brunches, a kind of breadcrumbed, egg, sausage and bacon mix and Sainsbury's breakfast slices.
I loved super mousse but we didn't have them often.

Miss my mum's Sunday tea, white bread chicken paste sandwiches and currant, or fairy cakes or jam buns.

Those of you missing Madeleine type cakes, similar cakes in Northern Ireland are jammie Joey's.

I was really depressed the other day to realize that Cafe Noir biscuits are no more.

Not that I’d eaten them for a decade or so, but they were my favourite biscuits as a teenager and I fancied buying a packet.

Otherwise: gooseberries, rhubarb (raw) with sugar for dipping, toast with dripping, potted beef.

I bought cafe noir biscuits at Christmas. They're different though.... smaller

The paper chocolate cigarettes, peel the paper off and eat the chocolate stick inside.

I can’t remember taking the paper off, think I just ate the lot 🤣

Mickeychampionwhatgoodami · 21/04/2025 21:55

I tried that,I wasn't a keener on eating the paper

CharlestheBold · 21/04/2025 21:56

FORCE cornflakes, they were smaller flakes than Kellogs.
Were they only sold to the catering trade, not general retail? Anyone remember?

The restaurant at Darts was very uneven rather than bad - I am veggie and the only option was a bit rubbish. Never eaten at Greendale and tbh I don't each out much so probably i'm not too helpful. I believe there is an excellent veggie restaurant in exeter, and there are some good pubs in some of the villages with often a reasonable veggie option. I like the Lebanese place on cathedral green -lots of excellent veggie food. Pig at Coombe has lots of good veggie dishes if you want to push the boat out.

Do they not? Being coffee flavoured, they seemed like the height of sophistication. I know you can get similar biscuits but I'm quite sad to see them go.

DisabledDemon · 21/04/2025 22:15

Angel Delight. Not that I had a lot to do with it until I had lodger who liked it. Unfortunately, he left it on the table while we had a chat and one of my cats ate it. I think it was toffee flavoured.

I love faggots I get them occasionally. Usually when I'm doing a quick shop at Heron's. What I miss is those little Ice cream moose's. I don't know why we can't get them anymore. I always eat them frozen but recently heard you were ment to defrost them.

A quick Google tells me you can still buy the packs of frozen mousse.. 68p from Asda. I know where I’m going tomorrow 😅
Apparently you’re meant to defrost them for 45 mins before eating.. well I never!!

Jelly mousse is made by whisking jelly and evaporated milk together. Try this:

The chocolate cup cakes in metallic red cases. They were flat and topped with a thick layer of chocolate icing! When you took the case off there were always bits of chocolate icing left in the ridges and used to eat them off the case! Can anyone remember what they were called? I miss them.

My grandparents always gave me tongue sandwiches. I loved them but don’t think I realised it was a real tongue!

Also the Lemon meringue pie kits! I remember my mum making the lemon bit by melting some kind of yellow bead in what might have been milk? Good old 70s.

Oh and Bernard Matthews turkey burgers!
