Food you don’t often see anymore

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Regularly make kedgeree it’s lovely!

We used to have faggots for dinner when we were kids growing up in the West Country (cheapo meatballs you would eat with mash and gravy) . Not sure they are allowed any more given the name.

Sometimes used to get a brand called Brains Faggots from the supermarket - blimey that sounds unappetising now. Loved them at the time….

You can still get them @Comtesse and they still taste amazing Farmfoods do them

TonTonMacoute · 21/04/2025 19:02

I used to love a biscuit called Royal Scot, they were quite plain, round and a bit shortbready.

Little treacle tarts, I think they came from Sainsburys

Heinz golden syrup sponge in a tin

A powder that came in a sachet, you missed it up with water and it 'tasted just like freshly squeezed orange juice!' (It didn't)

My mum used to make semolina for pudding, also a chocolate blancmange which she used to put in a mould shaped like a rabbit.

She also made a pudding made by melting a packet of jelly cubes and whisking it up with tin of condensed milk, I think.

I still love the offal I ate as a child - oxtail, liver kidneys and sweetbreads. I have a friend who is a farmer, and usually buy a lamb from her, but gives me the organs from all of them as no one else wants them!

@WithoutACherryOnTheTop That’s a great idea, thank you. I will definitely give that a go!
Love your username tying in with the subject matter too 🍒 😉

Heron foods do the faggots . Pretty sure they’re still called that . A weird food that sounds horrible but is bloody lovely !

The powdered orange juice was called Tang I think. I remember semolina - it was a powder made up with milk and sweetened. My mum used to serve it up with a blob of jam !!

I remember my gran making a pud with standard jelly made up with half the liquid content. She would whisk up a tin of evaporated milk until it thickened, whisk the jelly in and let it set. It made a kind of mousse.

I love steak and kidney pie but beef kidney is almost impossible to buy now, as are oxtails. My nan’s oxtail stew was the best !!

I still make smoked haddock kedgeree, but a curried version. Very easy!

Lovelysausagedogscrumpy · 21/04/2025 19:10

Findus crispy pancakes. I loved the minced beef ones.

Cognacsoft · 21/04/2025 19:14

Proper Hazelet.
I haven’t had it in years.

Flin · 21/04/2025 19:14

The powdered orange juice that I can remember was Rise & Shine.

I used to love a lasagne from M&S that was a boil-in-a-tin thing. Also their tuna and cheese toastie sandwich.

Iwannakeepondancing · 21/04/2025 19:19

Corned beef… didn’t like it then and definitely wouldn’t want it now! Cheap nasty crap! Tinned potatoes too.. eurgh! Such a caravan holiday dinner!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/04/2025 19:20

Whoever said blancmange, it’s dead easy to make. Now and then I make a chocolate one for dh.

And whoever said brawn, it’s everywhere in France, either at the deli counter, or in jars at the supermarket. They call it fromage de tete.

Mydahliasareshit · 21/04/2025 19:23

Me: Mummy, please may I have a Super Mousse after tea?

(Mum gets one out of freezer. I grab spoon and tear off lid)

Mum: You're supposed to let them defrost, otherwise you'll have a tummy ache!

Me: No I won't! (Digs in gleefully)

(I never did have a tummy ache) 😊

I really fancy doing a retro dinner party now, and resurrect all these dishes. I really love a properly made Black Forest gateau. The last one I had was a huge one from Costco, but it tasted very chemically, very odd after taste, almost medicinal.
Anyone had one recently? Maybe the one I had was a dud one!

I had an awesome one last year but I WAS in the Black Forest to be fair.
I am not brave enough to attempt one but I do make a trifle version

We used to love those sponges puddings in a tin - and the golden syrup one was definitely the best!

Innittowinnit · 21/04/2025 19:26

Has junket been mentioned yet?

Sorry don’t have time to RTFT.

My Grandma used to make it with nutmeg

Yes, that's the one I remember!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 21/04/2025 19:27

Rise and shine! Bloody loved that.
McVitie’s Golden Crunch. They only do cream ones now and dh is sad.
Pork Chops with kidney in (I I know, regulations. But if I sweet talk our butchers he’ll cut a couple)
All of Thornton’s continentals and boxes of special toffee.

Cyclingmummy1 · 21/04/2025 19:27

Toolatetoasknow · 21/04/2025 18:38

My friend's mum cooked/poached chicken in a white creamy sauce that had small green grapes added just before it was served (with rice). It would be a good main for a retro dinner party.
We often make kedgeree, and smoked salmon kedgeree at Christmas.

Marks sold this about 25 years ago.

in a blue packet,
it was great

You can still get it on Ocado, in the blue packet.

Anon9898 · 21/04/2025 19:30

Pineapple fritters.

ChompandaGrazia · 21/04/2025 19:30

I remember a chocolate bar that you used to be able to get in M&S that was like a fry’s crème but long fingers in three pieces. I seem to remember it came in a box rather than a wrapper.

Rubyroo73 · 21/04/2025 19:32

Ethel chocolate desserts called ‘Lovely’. Had a tiny swirl of cream on the top. They were frozen like the super mouse mentioned up tread. I loved them and could never wait for them to defrost!

also the crispy yellow noodles that you deep fried and they curled up!

I loved those.
I remember trying to microwave one to speed up the defrosting process.
It didn't end well
