Food you don’t often see anymore

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

Tripe. Thank goodness. And sweetbreads.
Pig’s head. Tongue. Brawn.

Faggots were a delight in comparison- we had local butcher ones, really good. Oh and oxtail.

Oxtail is alive and well in West Indian cuisine. Jamaican oxtail is delicious!

It's been a long time since I had liver and bacon. Those that still do it - do you use lamb or pigs liver?

Calves’ liver is the best but it’s expensive, @LittleGreenDragons.

Not traditional but chicken liver is actually very nice if you want a cheaper version than calves’ liver with a milder taste than pig or lamb liver, and a less leathery texture 😂

Very long spaghetti! Not the stuff that’s like 30cm long, more like 50-60cm. Where has that gone?

You can still buy it, I've bought it from Lidl

I miss Spud U Like so much. There isn't one near me. I don't know if they even still exist

The unmatchable Victoria Wood had a joke about weird shop names and she said she didn’t understand why someone had called a shop “Spoodoolickay”. 😂

Hes Road by the launderette?

I had mates there! I lived opposite the 24 hour Jet garage. Which was very handy and reminds me of another food I miss - the Jet garage custard donuts. While you can still get custard donuts, they have never been as enjoyable as the Jet garage custard donuts were. Particularly at about 2am…

Sat here surrounded by easter eggs and all I want is a tin of cheesy footballs!

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 18:36

I really fancy doing a retro dinner party now, and resurrect all these dishes. I really love a properly made Black Forest gateau. The last one I had was a huge one from Costco, but it tasted very chemically, very odd after taste, almost medicinal.
Anyone had one recently? Maybe the one I had was a dud one!

Cheesy footballs appear for Christmas in our local Tesco’s but you have to be a) very fast and b) very early!

Is butterscotch Angel Delight still A Thing?

Also my grandmother used to make junket. Heaven cold with lots of nutmeg!!

AmandaPomander · 21/04/2025 18:38

Spangles,
Buttersnaps,
Callard and Bowser cherry nougat,
Peppermint Crisp.

Yes, I grew up in the 1970s.

Toolatetoasknow · 21/04/2025 18:38

My friend's mum cooked/poached chicken in a white creamy sauce that had small green grapes added just before it was served (with rice). It would be a good main for a retro dinner party.
We often make kedgeree, and smoked salmon kedgeree at Christmas.

Proper milky ways, that were brown inside, not white. I loved them!

I remember a Sainsbury,s (frozen, I think) mushroom cannelloni. As I recall, very tasty. Anyone else? Also a Weight Watchers Zucchini lasagne. Early 1990s

You can get long spaghetti sometimes in Waitrose (of course). It's folded in half in a clear plastic wrapper. You used to get it wrapped in paper unfolded.

My mum used to make mince and dumplings when I was a kid. I loved it - used to help make the dumplings by rubbing the suet into the flour. She also had a chip pan full of lard; she used to change the lard a couple of times a year.

"Is butterscotch Angel Delight still A Thing?"

Yes and I have a packet in the drawer at this very moment :)

@BigJanette

"I really love a properly made Black Forest gateau. The last one I had was a huge one from Costco, but it tasted very chemically, very odd after taste, almost medicinal.

I make an easy variant - fairly bog standard chocolate cake sandwiched with good quality cherry jam and whipped cream, dusted with icing sugar on the top. If I have any in the freezer, I defrost some cherries, dribble the juice over the sponge that will be sandwiched together and then put the cherries on top of the jam before the cream goes on. If you want to go for the real McCoy there's a good Delia recipe which is a bit more effort.

I saw gooseberry yogurts in Sainsburys today -99p each I think

I love gooseberry. Only ever found gooseberry fool in the yoghurt isle at my Sainsbury's recently though.

Auburngal · 21/04/2025 18:54

Bob cakes. It’s a local thing. We called them splodge cakes at school. Cornflakes, chocolate, butter, golden syrup. Imagine very dense cornflake clusters!

In my meat eating days we regularly had fried Spam for dinner, with homemade deep fried chips in lard and frozen peas. Makes my arteries twinge just thinking about it.

I was amazed to see it in the supermarket recently and wondered who was still buying it.

Six years ago I was in hospital with my newly born twins, they were in SCBU for 3 weeks and I lived in with them. The food was just awful in the hospital

I asked my mum to bring me a lovely sandwich for lunch - she asked me if I wanted spam or pek 😳 I told her neither and it’s fine I’ll ask someone else 😂😂

also tinned hotdogs make me want to vomit, they’re all the things I had as kids and I just can’t stomach them now

Comtesse · 21/04/2025 11:57

Regularly make kedgeree it’s lovely!

We used to have faggots for dinner when we were kids growing up in the West Country (cheapo meatballs you would eat with mash and gravy) . Not sure they are allowed any more given the name.

Sometimes used to get a brand called Brains Faggots from the supermarket - blimey that sounds unappetising now. Loved them at the time….

i remember having faggots once, only once i think!
