Food you don’t often see anymore

1000 replies

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

When I was at Uni in York in the 90's in our 2nd year we lived in a house a few doors down from a Sarah Lee Factory shop.
Any visiting parents were frog marched there to buy Double Chocolate gateau!

I was at York uni in the 90s! And yes, I did that too!

Also, my housemates and I would make a point of popping in each time we were walking past in case they had any seconds!

Is boil in the bag cod in parsley sauce still a thing? Ate that at least once a week my entire childhood. Mmm - boiled plastic.

Not a dinner but Sainsbury’s used to sell something called corn crisp I think? Like a disc of chocolate coated cornflakes.

Blancmange! I love it!! Can get it in Europe I believe 🤔

Memories of my DM making blancmange and burning it - oh the smell!

Do people still make corn beef hash?

Corn beef hash? Oh yes! Delia has a great recipe for it with a fried egg on top.

Findus used to make a pizza that was on one half of a baguette. It was as hard as rocks, rather like trying to eat a chandelier and used to leave you with a sore mouth.

My mother recently gave me a tin of chicken supreme, which I had on toast. I was immediately catapulted back to the 1970s!

Very long spaghetti! Not the stuff that’s like 30cm long, more like 50-60cm. Where has that gone?

We had that spaghetti throughout my childhood
where has is gone!!

Aldi had some gooseberry yoghurts the other week that were absolutely delicious. I only managed to eat one of a four pack because DS11 had the rest.

I keep looking for them and can’t find them, but if you see them buy them. 10/10. Hoping it signals a gooseberry renaissance.

I saw gooseberry yogurts in Sainsburys today -99p each I think

Greggs used to do a fantastic very light sponge square covered in jam and coconut that I think was called a Madeline. I really miss those.

Yes! I also really miss school dinners desert.

Booboobagins · 21/04/2025 18:16

I miss veggie burgers you made just by adding an egg to a mixture. H&B stocked them but dont anymore, just like they now dont stock vegetable pate...

Ladamesansmerci · 21/04/2025 17:20

I'm sure you can still get it and it has uses in cooking! I just never hear about it anymore, and defo not in the context of on toast 😂

My mum used to pour the fat off a roast beef joint into a small bowl. The "juices" from the beef set into a jelly at the bottom of the bowl and the fat solidified on top of the jelly.

Delicious spread on toast - needed to get some of the jelly & the fat on the toast - with a good shake of white pepper.

Regularly make kedgeree it’s lovely!

We used to have faggots for dinner when we were kids growing up in the West Country (cheapo meatballs you would eat with mash and gravy) . Not sure they are allowed any more given the name.

Sometimes used to get a brand called Brains Faggots from the supermarket - blimey that sounds unappetising now. Loved them at the time….

We get these in Aldi. We just don't call them by their name even though it still says it on the packet! They're not as good as I remember but my kids will eat them and they're cheap!

DH and I were trying to remember the other day what the fake cream was you could get. Not Elmlea or Tip Top but there was something else.

Dream Topping?

This post reminds me of the book The Prawn Cocktail Years.

Plus it makes me want to eat a Baked Alaska.

Yes! I loved coke floats. I used to get one at a cafe when out with my Gran. Either Diet coke, Diet Irn Bru, cream soda or ginger beer.

Spam in batter, deep fried. My favourite school dinner.

Oh yes! Spam fritters.

The yucky thing was cheese pie. It was a sort of quiche but not very nice and made me feel sick so I was excused it. Unfortunately, the substitution was rubbery scrambled eggs.

Spam makes a great pie when sliced and mixed with beaten egg.
