Food you don’t often see anymore

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

It might have been mentioned already - but Strawberry Super Mousse from the late 1980s. It was in a plastic tub that had a strawberry centre and cream around the outside that you kept in the freezer. Each tub would take hours to defrost but it was worth waiting for! I wish they would bring it back

I used to.eat .it frozen were you not supposed to?

ElizaCBennett · 21/04/2025 17:32

Blancmange! I love it!! Can get it in Europe I believe 🤔

butterdish93 · 21/04/2025 17:33

Suet steak puddings I've not seen one in years even our chip shops stopped doing them

Every Chippy where I live, still sells them. I’m in the North West.

Even better now though, as we have a local Chippy that sells rag puddings (delicious)

Green’s Carmelle. A dead ringer for real vanilla
egg custard. Maybe it’s still around.

Green's Carmelle still available, I bought mine and the (bargain) Green's egg custard in Morrison's

Early 2000s Sainsburys in Putney did this bread in their bakery section that was slightly sweet maybe similar to a brioche made from two doughs, a plain one and one chocolate loosely mixed together. I think it was dusted with cocoa powder. I used to have it spread with butter an a cup of tea. It was so good. Still miss it a quarter of a century on.

Lucyccfc68 · 21/04/2025 17:43

Vesta beef curry (in a box). I loved it as a child, along with findus beef pancakes.

I know a few people have mentioned tripe and tongue. I’m not a fan, but you can still buy both at my local indoor market.

Beef cobblers - one of the worst school dinners.

The paprika sounds right, as I remember. The pink gloop will be the same stuff prawn cocktail is made with, I think - i.e. mayonnaise coloured with prawns. I don't get the oven bit, though. I was looking at a recipe for devilled eggs just recently - they're coming back into fashion with all the 70s revival food - when looking for some canape ideas.

Looked up 'Devilled eggs' - no, not them, they don't have poached salmon in them and seem a main dish, not a starter. And they were hot, not cold. I wish I had written down the recipe!

Home made alcoholic trifle
Apple turnovers

Fruits of the Forest and Peach Melba yoghurts. They were in every pack of yoghurts you ever saw when I was a child - these two plus a strawberry and a raspberry. You never see these flavours now.

Sorry if it’s been said many times but: Sarah Lee double chocolate gateau. I know it must have stopped being made about 15 years ago but I still miss it!

Thelittleweasel · 21/04/2025 17:49

@SabrinaThwaite

I have some pink custard powder [inaptly labelled as "blancmange"] in the cupboard. I really must use it up [though still in date]. Leading a sad life I sent for it some while ago on eBay

Same feelings about M&S Christmas boule - they never brought it back!!!!

When I was at Uni in York in the 90's in our 2nd year we lived in a house a few doors down from a Sarah Lee Factory shop.
Any visiting parents were frog marched there to buy Double Chocolate gateau!

Garibaldis..squashed fly biscuits we called them, we loved them!

Nelliemellie · 21/04/2025 17:54

The lemon baked cheesecake in M&S in the 80s. Cadburys chocolate before the takeover by USA.

muddyford · 21/04/2025 17:56

Faggots in gravy (not the ghastly lumps of pulp in a box in the freezer department). Our local butcher has started making them so salvation is nigh.

Calves liver - lambs liver tastes like the bits of Dartmoor where the sheep snuggle under a rock. Calves is bliss.

Heart - I was stunned by how meaty and delicious they are.

Mince pies with unsweetened pastry.

Symington table cream.

Regularly make kedgeree it’s lovely!

We used to have faggots for dinner when we were kids growing up in the West Country (cheapo meatballs you would eat with mash and gravy) . Not sure they are allowed any more given the name.

Sometimes used to get a brand called Brains Faggots from the supermarket - blimey that sounds unappetising now. Loved them at the time….

Yes, we loved them, with peas 😁

Still get them in Aldi, about £1.25 for 6. Delicious. And why wouldn’t they be ‘allowed’?! Nothing to do with a gay slur at all.

CrowsInMyGarden · 21/04/2025 18:00

@MyKingdomForACat Oooh Pease Pudding. Not had that for years. I am 63 and became vegetarian years ago. Before Quorn or Linda Mccartney etc. My mum used to open a tin of Pease Pudding at both ends and slide it out, slice it into 6 or so and then fry the slices to make burgers! Was lovely.
