Easter Sunday as family event like Xmas day?

When I was younger, we celebrated Easter very similar to Christmas Day with extended family members.

For various reasons now I don’t see it as any kind of special family day.
My kids are with their father. It’s a normal Sunday to me (Plus chocolate obviously).
Even if kids were here, it would still be a fairly normal Sunday

Am I alone in this ?

It's not as big an event, but we do meet family for a Sundays roast and an easter egg hunt.

100PercentFaithful · 19/04/2025 21:55

DH, the kids and I are all going to a sunrise service at 6am tomorrow. We are going to MIL for lunch and SIL and her kids are also joining us.
Easter egg hunt in the afternoon with all the extended family.
It’s very much a family event like Christmas for us.

Playmobil4Eva · 19/04/2025 21:55

We always go to my sister’s- she cooks a big roast and then we play board games and the kids have an Easter Egg hunt. I love it. We spend all of the weekend in and out of each other’s houses like we do at Christmas.

you don't invite other family members to yours on Easter Sunday when you're celebrating with your kids? Why not?

I get that if you're child free though you might not want to celebrate.

myplace · 19/04/2025 21:58

We did when the dc were younger. We’d always invite single people from church, too. Now it’s more a fancy roast and I’ve made various chocolate deserts. Sunrise service, church then roast.
We’d do a hunt if there were children or visitors, but not just for us adults.

CoastalCalm · 19/04/2025 21:58

Nothing special for us , we are spending the day at the allotment

Mandarinaduck · 19/04/2025 21:59

For us it's still a special family day - church, big meal, Easter egg hunt for the children.

almostbloody50 · 19/04/2025 22:01

in our house growing up it’s always been a normal Sunday, with kids we started doing a roast and Easter egg hunt, friends over etc.

now with grown almost adult kids we are off out they are all doing their own things. So fur us it’s just changed over the years.

TennesseeStella · 19/04/2025 22:02

I'm 45 and it's never been anything other than a normal Sunday. I think Easter is much less of a big thing in Scotland. IKEA is open here tomorrow whereas it's closed in England and Wales apparently.

Attictroll · 19/04/2025 22:02

Not exactly like Christmas a roast out with family. But in fairness even pre kids it was a day for friends to get together over lunch. I kind of think of it as a super Sunday 😂

atamlin · 19/04/2025 22:04

I didn’t grow up in a religious family; we got a couple of Easter eggs and that was it. My eldest became obsessed with the Easter Bunny at the age of SEVEN. I thought it was a joke at first but no, people do encourage this. She just asked me tonight how Santa and the Easter Bunny can get round all the houses. She is still awake now in bed beside herself with excitement.

notthatoldchestnut · 19/04/2025 22:04

Very much like Christmas here too. Church, family dinner and egg hunt. Go visiting various family members. It’s lovely

Boredlass · 19/04/2025 22:06

I’ve never done anything for Easter Sunday. I’m not religious so it’s another day to me.

Eggsboxedandmelting · 19/04/2025 22:07

We have a bigger day on Good Friday.. Following dgm's tradition
. She went into hospital one Easter Sunday and never came out. A bitter sweet day now. Are having a roast but just me, dh and 2 of the dc...

Bigearringsbigsmile · 19/04/2025 22:08

Special day here. Church, roast lamb, easter eggs, board games, wine. Lovely

BitterTits · 19/04/2025 22:11

We used to do an egg hunt when the DCs were little but now it's just Sunday with chocolate. Nice to have the long weekend as a family but it's just the four of us, unless our parents drop by.

tigger1001 · 19/04/2025 22:12

Never been a big day for us. Easter egg hunt when kids were wee in the morning then a normal Sunday.

im working on Monday and kids back to school too so just a typical Sunday here

queenofthesuburbs · 19/04/2025 22:14

Table laid with little vases of flowers and nice linen. Church and then roast lamb with family
Definitely special but less pressurised than Christmas

Did you read the post?

Middleagedstriker · 19/04/2025 22:15

For us it's less pressure, apart from an egg for the kids and an egg hunt it doesn't cost much.

We have a roast with extended family and a long walk but it is family time.

SilverButton · 19/04/2025 22:17

My parents are coming for the day and we'll have an egg hunt in the garden (even though my kids are teens!) and roast lamb for lunch. So yes, it is a bit like a much more low key version of Christmas.

JustMyView13 · 19/04/2025 22:17

I was reflecting on this earlier! Not even a family roast this year. So sad.
At least my mum sent over some Easter eggs 😂❤️
Yes, millennial here and never too old for an advent calendar or Easter egg.

Zippidydoodah · 19/04/2025 22:18

I was telling my kids that when I was growing up, it was more of a family day (eggs, roast etc) but it’s never been like that for us. We have an egg hunt at grandparents and tomorrow, we will just be doing normal stuff and eating a normal dinner. We are atheist but my mum was Christian back then.

YouRemindMe0fTheBabe · 19/04/2025 22:19

We do chocolate eggs/an egg hunt but other than that it's a normal day. We are having lunch with extended family members this year but do that regularly anyway. We're not religious, just using the long weekend as an opportunity to get together. It was never a big deal when I was a kid either.

Jshrbt · 19/04/2025 22:20

We normally see family; in part because it’s a 4 day weekend so good opportunity to have visitors/travel
