Easter Sunday as family event like Xmas day?

skinnyoptionsonly · 19/04/2025 21:52

When I was younger, we celebrated Easter very similar to Christmas Day with extended family members.

For various reasons now I don’t see it as any kind of special family day.
My kids are with their father. It’s a normal Sunday to me (Plus chocolate obviously).
Even if kids were here, it would still be a fairly normal Sunday

Am I alone in this ?

A good dog walk in the fresh air with DC then egg hunt and roast lamb. Maybe some board games.

Just a solid family day.

Not religious, but it’s the middle of a long bank holiday weekend so family available to come. . Easter Egg hunt in garden for toddler - was going to make it just a chocolate cake for tea but offered a simple, non fussy roast for late lunch and all accepted. Looking forward to it !

Table laid with little vases of flowers and nice linen. Church and then roast lamb with family
Definitely special but less pressurised than Christmas

Similar here, as Christians it’s more important to us than Christmas so we have a special day but without all the presents and madness that goes with it!

Just been discussing this with OH. We are in Scotland.

I don’t have memories of Easter egg hunts or stuff about a bunny but Easter Sunday was always spent with family, usually my cousins. And we would always decorate hard boiled eggs and find a hill to race them down.

do your family still get drunk at Xmas still and are you leaving them out?

Family day for us at some stage over the Easter weekend - Saturday, Sunday or Monday - depending on what everyone’s plans are. Happens every year with chocolates and flowers. Love it.

I didn’t grow up in a religious family; we got a couple of Easter eggs and that was it. My eldest became obsessed with the Easter Bunny at the age of SEVEN. I thought it was a joke at first but no, people do encourage this. She just asked me tonight how Santa and the Easter Bunny can get round all the houses. She is still awake now in bed beside herself with excitement.

This is so cute. I hope she has a lovely Easter!

Easter Sunday is just another Sunday for us. We used to do Easter egg hunts when the kids were little. They used to have Easter Bonnet competions at school and make Easter cards. And we've always got them a few Easter eggs and we'd sometimes have a lamb roast if my parents were joining us.
But we're not a religious family and no longer have an extended family to get together with so it's just a nice chilled, extended weekend, with a bit of chocolate and hot cross buns 😋

We’re a very small family, just me, DH and DD and we’re not at all religious. There will be eggs and an egg hunt early morning then we’re planning to go to a local(ish) floating market behind held on a canal with very nice walking routes, then home for a roast for dinner. Nothing fancy just a nice day together with plenty of chocolate for DH and DD.

Whatwouldnanado · 19/04/2025 22:32

Christmas without the pressure. We used to do an egg hunt but now it’s just a roast dinner, picky tea and grandkids round for games and a bit of craft. Walk if it’s decent weather. Nice.

staffabbmelford1995 · 19/04/2025 22:37

Easter egg hunt and a roast when the children were younger , my Mum was always invited for lunch .
Today we had egg hunt for grandchildren, son and girlfriend joined us , buffet lunch .
Tomorrow, normal day and working 12hr shift.

I was brought up with Easter being a big religious event as grew up in Ireland. Lots of church services. We always had new clothes too as children. And a few Easter eggs. No Easter bunny or egg hunts though.

DH wasn’t really brought up that way so it wasn’t a big thing for him really.

Over the years it’s become more of an event for him but no religious leaning for either of us. So it’s just a nice meal and a relaxed day a bit l8ke Christmas Day but without the presents and pressure.

In fact I had a plaintive “Did you get me an Easter Egg?” this morning from DS. He’s 23,

you don't invite other family members to yours on Easter Sunday when you're celebrating with your kids? Why not?

I get that if you're child free though you might not want to celebrate.

I don’t have those kind of relationships with my family unfortunately and sadly.

We often do have a family event as it's the only time we can all get together usually outside of Christmas.

MaggieLouLove · 19/04/2025 22:39

not alone!!!!!! i plan on spending it with a big pile of chocolate and bridget jones… kids with dad

mindingmyown37 · 19/04/2025 22:40

When I was younger we used to go round my Nan’s house. Aunt and uncle lived thier too so would be a massive family roast, loads of choc for me and my brother, shops were all shut so it very much felt like Christmas. We are not religious so ours was basically all about the eggs 😛

PoodlesRUs · 19/04/2025 22:41

Absolutely fucking not.

Don’t you know about weekends?

steelingmyself · 19/04/2025 22:47

OP - I hope you have a wonderful day tomorrow - do something nice for yourself perhaps you wouldn’t normally do! I always find it a bit sad when my eldest is with his dad, even if I know he’s having a good day.

Sorry some of our comments have been so thoughtless!

IthasYes · 19/04/2025 22:47

Like Christmas is a fusion of ancient traditions so is Easter.
Like Christmas I think the Christ's Easter story has important messages, the whole egg's rebirth lamb's the world waking up and the Easter bunny and egg's!
We have some simple decorations and will do a roast.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 19/04/2025 22:49

It's always been a big thing in mine and my husbands families. We do year about like we do with Christmas.

There are lots of cousins to have an Easter egg hunt with and a big roast is cooked.

Obviously I don’t, it was just a question. Family of origin? Why should that be a concern to me reading your post? If it was maybe you should have said it was a reason why it was a problem.

My family just think it’s a good reason to get together and enjoy life.
