Easter Sunday as family event like Xmas day?

skinnyoptionsonly · 19/04/2025 21:52

When I was younger, we celebrated Easter very similar to Christmas Day with extended family members.

For various reasons now I don’t see it as any kind of special family day.
My kids are with their father. It’s a normal Sunday to me (Plus chocolate obviously).
Even if kids were here, it would still be a fairly normal Sunday

Am I alone in this ?

I love it. It’s like Christmas without the build up and present buying. Extended family big lamb dinner, Easter egg hunt and a nice walk. Baileys and wine to follow.

i reckon the entire 25 odd church goers in the UK are on this thread. It spins my mind to hear it - quaint really

Maybe you should get out more. In the most recent census, 27 million adults identified as Christian. Agreed, not many regularly go to church, but Easter is one time people may go to church who don't usually go. It's a really normal and nice thing to do.

Peacepleaselouise · 20/04/2025 01:13

It's like Christmas for us. Church service in the morning, Easter egg hunt for the kids, family or friends from church over for roast. We all dress up. Kids have new clothes.

Relieved to hear others never got the memo about this second Christmas stuff. I’ve been having guilt creep up about not having a lavish roast dinner planned!

Don’t you know about weekends?

Don't you know about people working shifts and outside of Monday to Friday hours? Never mind adding in families not all living in easy travelling distance....

jodolun · 20/04/2025 01:28

We are all having a big extended family dinner tomorrow the same as Christmas Day or New Years Day.

MilnersGold · 20/04/2025 01:31

We did Easter this evening at my parents due to older teenagers working. My sister did an amazing job of hiding little eggs and over the years it's changed from my kids finding them in the garden to my very ill dad spotting a few carefully hidden within reach outside the back door, but he absolutely had to join in

Wonderwall23 · 20/04/2025 03:50

I would just describe it as Easter weekend in general being bigger than a normal weekend. Due to the extra days off we always make the effort to get together with both sides of the family at some point...doesn't necessarily have to be Sunday. It's one of my favourite points of the year.

DilemmaDelilah · 20/04/2025 07:47

Easter was always a family event when my mother was alive. I would love to have all my family around me, but it doesn't work out that way 😞

AleaEim · 20/04/2025 08:03

Is it a middle class English thing to go to church on Easter and have a special dinner? I’ve honestly never heard of anyone in real life doing anything on Easter apart from eating chocolate.

You have seen any of the supermarket adverts advertising ingredients for Easter lunch?
Haven't seen all the special offers on lamb?

Mumofyellows · 20/04/2025 08:08

It's not a big thing for me anymore. We would go to church when I was a child as my family were religious and we would always have a family lunch but nowadays it's just a normal Sunday.
I don't really have any family here now and DH's family are not remotely interested in Easter, my DD is back at uni so no motivation for a big Easter roast and I don't eat lamb anyway!
Today we are taking our dogs on a long walk in a new place. Fajitas for dinner and a movie.

Decafflatteplease · 20/04/2025 08:11

It's like mini Christmas here although more low key

Church this morning after egg hunt of course!

Games this afternoon and crafts with, presents (eggs) and a small toy (cash for the teens 😉).

Roast dinner around 5.

Do it all again tomorrow with extended family!

LavenderBlue19 · 20/04/2025 08:18

Nothing special for us, other than the chocolate. We're doing an Easter egg hunt for our child, and then going for a walk/playground trip later. I think MIL is coming over for dinner but that's not unusual. I'm going to spend as much time as I can in the garden.

Easter really isn't a thing for us, it's just a nice long weekend with chocolate.

MinkyWales · 20/04/2025 08:24

As a child we always had a roast lamb dinner, and there were Easter eggs. Usually lots for me from family, but since I wasn’t a very sweet-toothed child, they seemed to hang around forever!

We didn’t do Easter egg hunts, but we did paint eggs and then roll them down a hill. I don’t do that any more - it seems a waste, given the effort the chicken has gone through to make them.

I have but I thought it was just commercialism. I’m Irish and the same advertising happens over there but most people I know just do the Easter bunny thing and the childless go away for the weekend.

Cheersmedears123 · 20/04/2025 08:28

As kids we just got an Easter egg but it was nothing special really. Same as now. The bank holiday feels special just because we really appreciate the break from work and DH is making us a nice Sunday roast. We’re having a lovely relaxing few days as a family. DS randomly asked about the Easter Bunny the other day but I managed to put him off!

frozendaisy · 20/04/2025 08:29

Easter is not an event here.

It's the most important date for Christians, we are non-believers so it's irrelevant to us.

Although I am presently listening to the Radio4 service and gently reflecting, not in a big religious way, but it's good to take time out once in a while.

Whilst Christmas has become some crazy mass consumer competition I refuse to let Easter become the same in this house, but will throw some chocolate at teens when they wake up!

Radra · 20/04/2025 08:30

Is it my imagination or has Easter become a bigger celebration in the UK in recent years?

I feel like when I was younger, it was only really a big deal for commited Christians, otherwise it was like any other bank holiday weekends - I.e. you might go away or visit family or whatever but not Easter specific foods/celebrations

RaininSummer · 20/04/2025 08:35

Ishoulddomore · 19/04/2025 23:27

Of course it’s not easy, but If it means that much to you it’s doable. If you can’t be bothered don’t moan about it

Weird response. Where was I moaning. The question was about whether or not we do anything big at Easter?

That’s the feeling I get as well. The church-going, organ playing, board games, multi-generational egg hunts and big family meal…it’s worlds away from anyone I know, or my life. I’m in my 50s, it was just about easter eggs growing up. I don’t have DC but my extended family don’t do anything like this either.

TubeScreamer · 20/04/2025 08:57

My feeling is that it has become more of a family occasion in recent years. I noticed that where I live lots of people were out for walks en masse with their extended families, or had lots of people visiting.
I much prefer it to Christmas. It’s a nice pause without all the pressure and excess of Christmas, plus all the lovely spring flowers.

Sunnyside4 · 20/04/2025 09:00

It's never been a major event for us. Having said that I do have a thing about Hot Cross buns and fish on Friday (I'm not religious but that's the one day my family used to have fish growing up). Have always made sure DD and nieces/nephews have their Easter Eggs for today though. I only get five Sundays off work a year and have to take Easter Sunday. DH and I are planning on hill walking and then having a roast which we don't normally do. DD is away but we'll see her and BF tomorrow for tea.

Crunchymum · 20/04/2025 09:03

I'm doing a roast with all the trimmings (last proper roast I did was Christmas as mine aren't all massive fans so I rarely bother)

Kids will do an Easter Egg hunt later in the local community garden shortly, the older two have one small egg each (youngest had alternatives as she cannot have sugar)

They'll all go out for a bike ride with daddy whilst I prep dinner, we'll eat about 5pm and settle down for a family fillm later.

No fuss, not seeing wider family today bur still a nice family day.

BooksAndHooks · 20/04/2025 09:03

It has always been a second Christmas, with as many family as possible round the table for a big roast dinner, family egg hunt etc. we get together on Good Friday for fish and Chips and again on Easter Sunday.
