Easter Sunday as family event like Xmas day?

skinnyoptionsonly · 19/04/2025 21:52

When I was younger, we celebrated Easter very similar to Christmas Day with extended family members.

For various reasons now I don’t see it as any kind of special family day.
My kids are with their father. It’s a normal Sunday to me (Plus chocolate obviously).
Even if kids were here, it would still be a fairly normal Sunday

Am I alone in this ?

The Poles do both Easter and Christmas so well! I love the tradition of blessing the baskets of food and the colourful dried palm fronds on Palm Sunday

Isn't there also a custom on Bank holiday Monday for boys to sprinkle the girls with water, or is that another day?

Grin Śmigus Dyngus! Yes, it's Easter Monday. I'm the only woman in our family of four, so it's a bit of an ordeal some years!

Wincher · 20/04/2025 00:12

I like to do a nice Easter breakfast, got the table all laid with all the Easter eggs and egg cups ready for boiled eggs and chocolate hot cross buns ready too. Then church for those who want (prob just me and DS1), then family coming over later for a walk, board games, fizz, big lamb dinner. So kind of like Christmas but less pressure and better weather!

Mamaneedsgin · 20/04/2025 00:13

Totally normal Sunday for us, apart from an Easter egg hunt in the morning for DC. We are not remotely religious and it wouldn’t occur to me to do anything special with the family.

As soon as giving something up was mentioned years ago my ears slammed shut. 😅

I’ve got it now!

Shrove Tuesday is pancake day. Then you’ve got Ash Wednesday. (One of our teachers at school always used to have a cross on her forehead in ash and us orrible little oiks never understood why 🤦‍♀️) and that’s the first day of lent, which is the giving stuff up and fasting time. Then you’ve got a couple of days celebrating other stuff that I can’t remember (Jesus did some stuff) and then it’s Maundy Thursday.

Jesus, always doing stuff. I'm off to google Maundy, it's such a unique word.

Easter Bunny will deliver egg/small gift over night as surprise for kids. We will be "bunny" for some neighbours leaving small eggs & home made treats (started doing this during covid and it's the kids favourite thing now).

We'll go to church, then meet extended family to roll eggs and have egg hunt. Then have family dinner.

CJsGoldfish · 20/04/2025 00:18

I think last year I did a big roast dinner for lunch and all the kids/partners etc came over. But thats about the only 'Easter' thing I do and I couldn't be bothered this year. I spent the day with 3 out of 4 kids yesterday which was lovely. Other one might call in today. I've not bought a single choc egg. For me or for anyone. It's really just a nice break for us all and I'm enjoying pottering around the house doing 'stuff'

SquashedMallow · 20/04/2025 00:18

I do believe a lot of this seeing Easter as a second Christmas is commercialism. Makes supermarkets and retailers rich.

Caveat: different if you're devout Christian.

We've never made a big day of it. No roast, no family over. Kids just gobble up their eggs and we'll probably chill out or go for a walk!

I did to Easter egg hunts some years.

From the latin for 'mandatum'. There's a lot to this in the run up, I had no idea.

@TeamMandrake I'm in Scotland and the schools in my area are off Easter Monday and back in on Tuesday

We were off Friday, randomly, after just going back the previous Monday.

What would we be celebrating?

It has never crossed my mind to do anything beyond give the kids Easter eggs. Maybe a bit of a hunt when really little.

It’s just a normal Sunday surely

Ditto. Repeating myself : but people have bought into the shops trying to sell it as another "Christmas". We're quite shallow nowadays and easily guilted (which big supermarkets love) so we all go out spending a fortune on presents, big lamb roasts, Easter crafts and decor. What a great money spinner!

We eat chocolate and chill out. I'm not cooking for 10+ family members thanks !

Hollebob · 20/04/2025 00:22

The amount we’ve spent this Easter it feels like Christmas.

My other half went to a catholic school and he gets ticked off at all the huge bare wooden crosses that are erected. He calls them torture devices. Which... Yeah. I've noticed this year that they get draped in purple. More things to google.

I hate to say it: but more fool you! You're a retail industry's dream ! 😱

i reckon the entire 25 odd church goers in the UK are on this thread. It spins my mind to hear it - quaint really

Well yes, only a small minority of people go to church every Sunday, but there's quite a big group of people who just go on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day. Most of them are fairly lapsed, but might go because it's a nice service or maybe because they're spending the day with older relatives who still practise.

Our church will probably be completely packed tomorrow - will have to arrive early to get a seat, and it seats about 250 people.

Easter eggs? Did Jesus like chocolate?

Likely not. Not sure he liked sarcastic bellends either. But here you are.

Not sure he liked swear words either if your being that anal and pedantic. But here you are…

What would we be celebrating? We’d be celebrating the biggest date in the Christian calendar. Arguably more important in the Christian faith than Christmas. And even if most of us aren’t particularly religious anymore, the UK has a Christian heritage and Christianity is still the majority faith.

So if you’re a Christian it would be the resurrection of Jesus Christ after he gave his life on the cross so that we could be forgiven for our sins and have eternal life. If not, it would be a time to spend with family, have a lamb roast dinner and eat lots of chocolate. Or just another Sunday.

SouthLondonMum22 · 20/04/2025 00:53

It is like a mini Christmas for us. roast, family gathering, gifts for kids etc just with more chocolate and an egg hunt with even more chocolate.

Parkerbosily · 20/04/2025 00:53

Our family always had huge celebrations for it, not at all religious, in fact my fathers side are all atheists but like traditions. We had big egg hunts, wrapped presents, big roast dinner and desserts. I'd say it was pretty close to Christmas in terms of how big it was I always remember there were loads of relatives round on Easter Sunday and some stayed over for the weekend. Now I don't see my family but still go all out for my kids.

pumpkinpip007 · 20/04/2025 00:56

We aren’t as overblown as with Christmas celebrations but we celebrate with family on both sides leading in. Then in our home (DH, DC and myself), we additionally have an Easter egg hunt.

I'm 45 and it's never been anything other than a normal Sunday. I think Easter is much less of a big thing in Scotland. IKEA is open here tomorrow whereas it's closed in England and Wales apparently.

I’m from Ireland and until I moved to london I never realized that people have family events on Easter Sunday, for us growing up it was just Easter bunny, no dinner etc

Ponderingwindow · 20/04/2025 01:03

It was a big family holiday for us growing up, but our family was religious. Our adult household does not celebrate Easter. The extended family still hopes we attend some events. Some years we join, others we take the opportunity for a break.

dd has always been obsessed with egg hunts so we do one of those no matter what we are doing.
