Easter Sunday as family event like Xmas day?

skinnyoptionsonly · 19/04/2025 21:52

When I was younger, we celebrated Easter very similar to Christmas Day with extended family members.

For various reasons now I don’t see it as any kind of special family day.
My kids are with their father. It’s a normal Sunday to me (Plus chocolate obviously).
Even if kids were here, it would still be a fairly normal Sunday

Am I alone in this ?

I know what you mean. It uses to be an event, now it's an afterthought.
There used to be a build up in schools but now just maybe a small nod to easter.
We will gather for a roast and easter egg hunt.
As a child I also used to get a ridiculius amout of eggs, but I make sure my kids have as limited amount as possible. We dont buy them as we know they will get them from family and we don't want them to be eating chocolate for the next month.

YourWinter · 19/04/2025 22:58

I don’t get it at all. The primary and preschool kids know nothing of the biblical story, they don’t even particularly like chocolate, and despite being a granny I’ve never understood the chicks-and-bunnies marketing ploys.

Hopefully I can spend the day with the dogs and not be guilt-tripped into watching sugar-laden kids run amok!

Don’t you know about weekends?

That doesn't work if adult children live 300 miles away and I often have to work weekends. Sychronising time off for everyone isn't easy.

It’s a day spent with our grown up children and grandchildren, a big roast dinner and then presents, ( clothes, chocolate and an Easter cuddly!) with an Easter egg hunt thrown in too!

dementedpixie · 19/04/2025 23:00

I'm going to a Broadway boogie class as I always do on a Sunday. Not doing anything special except we all have an Easter egg

chamberay · 19/04/2025 23:02

Not like xmas day but will be seeing family tomorrow for a roast and an Easter egg hunt. Life’s been tough the last few years so try to celebrate things where we can and get the family together

BoundaryGirl3939 · 19/04/2025 23:05

I think if you go to mass or a Christian service, it becomes a special day (imo). It's not about the Easter bunny but the anniversary of Resurrection of Jesus so it's a good news day if you celebrate the religious side. Easter eggs are nice later in the day.

CountingDownToSummer · 19/04/2025 23:05

I agree with PP’s that in Scotland it’s not much different to any other Sunday. All our shops are open as usual.
Growing up and when my DC’s were young we would always decorate and roll our eggs though

AgingLikeGazpacho · 19/04/2025 23:08

I think it depends on how Christian you are, if anything it should be a bigger deal than Christmas! But yeah growing up in a non Christian household it was just an immediate family event for us whereas Christmas involved wider family

lilacflowerpetal · 19/04/2025 23:09

Apart from an egg hunt it’s a normal day for us.

It was a bigger deal as a child, because I was brought up Catholic, but I’m not religious now, and neither is my DH.

Mrscharlieeeee · 19/04/2025 23:13

We’re off to my mum’s tomorrow for a Sunday lunch and egg hunt, presents and eggs are currently set up downstairs for the morning and we’re having bunny crumpets and croissants for breakfast. Very much second Christmas in my family, but with (usually) better weather and less stress and pressure than Christmas and the added bonus of 4 days off work. What’s not to like!

89redballoons · 19/04/2025 23:14

My family is Catholic, and it's a special day for us, but not on the level of Christmas in terms of all of the decorations, presents, special food, loads of time off work etc.

My mum took the kids to get some food blessed at church this morning, and we'll have that tomorrow for breakfast before going to Mass. Egg hunt in the park and roast lamb for dinner. The food blessing bit is a Polish tradition (where my family are from) so they went to the Polish church for that.

DS1 is at a Catholic school and so he's been learning about Easter and Lent, and they had an "Easter festival" on the last day of term which involved an Easter bonnet parade and performing arts competitions and stuff.

All that said, if you asked my kids what the most exciting time of the year is, they would without a doubt say Christmas rather than Easter. The Christmas story is quite a bit more accessible for kids than the Easter story, too.

Robinsinthegarden · 19/04/2025 23:17

Christmas all over again at my mums, turkey, Christmas pudding etc, plus Easter eggs. We try do it as our family as often Christmas becomes a bit hit and miss with some going to in-laws

IthasYes · 19/04/2025 23:19

The resurrection of Jesus beautifully matches the resurrection of spring and the world coming back to life after winter..

MermaidMummy06 · 19/04/2025 23:20

Here, Easter is mostly for families to go camping. Weather is glorious right now (autumn). I've got my DC eggs on the table, waiting (I almost forgot, DH hasn't even realised).

DM will be here soon to do an Easter egg hunt. DB sometimes comes down (except he's gone camping!).

In the past we've done lovely extended family picnics in the park. It's a bit sad this year as some relatives are away & another relative has a child with a food related illness that makes any group meals difficult, especially if sweets are involved.

One Christmas type event a year is enough for me anyway. I'm still recovering from hosting Xmas!

Overhaul54 · 19/04/2025 23:20

This is the first year ever I’ve not been bothered. Got no one eggs and don’t want any.
I managed to find a bit of lamb today (not one if the half priced bits sadly) but I fancied a roast for one tomorrow.
I might put up some twig and painted egg decorations as friend is round Monday. It all seems a bit late this year.

dementedpixie · 19/04/2025 23:24

I've never had a lamb roast at Easter ever. We're having chicken topped with haggis and wrapped in pastry served with hasselback potatoes and broccoli/cauliflower cheese.
I might make mini egg cookies

0ohLarLar · 19/04/2025 23:24

We aren't christians so don't celebrate any religious aspects. But we enjoy it as the celebration of spring - eggs for breakfast, daffodils on the table, roast lamb sunday lunch with family, chocolate eggs & chick themed crafts.

CalicoPusscat · 19/04/2025 23:25

I love sending people presents at Xmas but am not interested in Easter.

Having said that I was quite pleased with my chocolate bunny present but don't want to nibble off its ears 🐇

ShowDownTime · 19/04/2025 23:25

We celebrate Easter. We’re Catholic so we go to church first thing then do an egg hunt and have a roast lunch with a nice walk hopefully. We’re staying with my in-laws this year. We do make an event of it and I love that it’s so low pressure compared to Christmas and you can make it as special or low key as you want.

Of course it’s not easy, but If it means that much to you it’s doable. If you can’t be bothered don’t moan about it

Easter eggs? Did Jesus like chocolate?

TeamMandrake · 19/04/2025 23:30

It is not a big deal for me at all, as we don't attend church. Monday is a normal school/work day (Scotland). Just a normal Sunday here, though I have bought the kids a big egg each, and a bag of little ones. I might hide them, if the kids fancy it in the morning. They don't get given them from anyone else. Then it will be normal sunday things - a trip to b&q probably, then the park if it's nice. A normal tea.

yeesh · 19/04/2025 23:33

We have a big family dinner (unless we go holiday) with parents, siblings and all the children and Easter eggs. We’re not religious so it’s more of a family tradition than anything else.

Mumwithbaggage · 19/04/2025 23:34

Slow roast lamb and dauphinoise potatoes. Three of the 4 adult dc and their partners will be here. Apparently it's NOT too old for an Easter Egg hunt when you're an actual adult with your own mortgage!!

Had friends here for lunch today too. Youngest dd made a fab cake.

No-one has asked me to play the organ at the local church this year so no need to get up at 7.30 and practise hymns. The family are grateful!!

I now need to come up with some fun Easter challenges aimed at grown ups.
