Dd(8) just screamed from the toilet, she says there was a black snakes tail moving about. She drew the photo.

Is that possible? What do I do? DH is at work

I was thinking round worms or maybe tapeworms. Often first realise children have them when you see them in the toilet bowl.

If you live in a city with a downstairs loo close to sewer line, then I’m afraid it could well be a rat. Had this issue in UK major city in our old house.

we moved

Mumsnet really needs to add the shocked face reaction.

My vote's for a ringworm.

When I was a child a cousin was staying with us and my mum found a ringworm in the toilet after she'd 'been'. Being of a practical mind my mum insisted on showing us all the worm so that if we saw one in the future we'd know what it was. Decades have passed but I haven't forgotten that sight!

We all got dosed with horrific medicine in case it had been left over from one of us and not the cousin.

Do you mean Tapeworm?

Ringworm is a fungal skin infection.

Flush the toilet before you open the lid, all nasties will be washed away. Flush after.

Househusband123 · 19/04/2025 21:29

We had two rats in house in last ten years. I have read conflicting stories about them entering toilet through drains.

I found the access to waste drain at rear of house. Normally a rectangle metal cover about 2 square feet in area. Lift It up and fit the cover on link below. Costs £10 and takes 5 minutes.

Not had rat in house since it was fitted.

Anti-Rat Rodent Barrier 110mm Toilet Drain Waste Valve

Protect your waste drain pipes from rodents with the Tycner Anti-Rat Rodent Barrier 110mm Toilet Outlet Drain Waste Soil Sewer Valve. Inlet diameter of 90mm and 100/110mm outlet diameter. Length of 65mm.

Pour a bottle of bleach down the toilet and shut the lid. Then flush with the lid closed several times before opening.

During a Covid lockdown, the rats and mice in the city where my DD lived had no food sources from restaurant bins and her flat (old building) was scurrying with them. They love garden decking too.

The tail of a rat in the toilet! Oh my goodness the very thought of that is terrifying.
Are rats in the toilet " a thing"?

I have heard of snakes in the toilet. One of the reasons I'll never use the loo at night without the bathroom light being on.

Edited

Yes. Years ago I got up to use the toilet in the night and wondered why the floor was wet (downstairs bathroom). Upon investigation, I found a hole had been chewed through the waste pipe by rodent teeth. Got the pipe replaced, it happened again. Rats had tunneled under the path and got in through the waste pipe. Had to get pest control in. I'm not scared of rats, but if I'd gone for a nocturnal wee and found one in the bathroom, I'd have shit myself 😂

Changednamesorry · 20/04/2025 00:21

Drain fly larva. It happened once at my flat (I live in Spain). Grim. My flatmate at the time texted me freaking out as I was away.

I would bet 50 pounds on it.

Thalia31 · 20/04/2025 06:50

Possible we found one at my aunties in Birmingham. Very possible

ClaytonGirl · 27/04/2025 09:25

I'd tip a couple of bottles of bleach down there too

Empress13 · 27/04/2025 09:29

Burn the house down pronto

PaulaBrighton · 28/04/2025 06:49

We started smelling something less than sweet in our loo, ended up removing the panels behind the toilet to find the flexible soil pipe from the toilet into the pipe in the floor had a whole load of rat teeth marks through it.

The pipe itself was white and there was a gap at the end of the units that probably let enough light in for ratty, who presumably had wandered up from the main sewer to get adventurous.

At least no one felt whiskers on their bum 😆

SoloSofa24 · 28/04/2025 23:01

We had a squirrel gnaw its way through the plastic s-bend - it had come down the stink pipe, which a crap roofer had left without a mesh cover. We assumed it was rats until the rather surprised pest control person came back to check poison bait and found a dead squirrel (if they had known it was a squirrel they would have used different methods).
