Dd(8) just screamed from the toilet, she says there was a black snakes tail moving about. She drew the photo.

nothing by the time I got there, I’ve flushed it.

Is that possible? What do I do? DH is at work

DS had a long worm (definitely a worm I saw the photo) in the toilet of his student house. Google says that if a house has old pipes they can crack and worms can get in! They laughed a lot, flushed it away and sent the landlord a picture - I’m certain the LL didn’t get the drains checked, if it was my own house I would have.

CeeJay81 · 18/04/2025 09:40

I had a restless night's sleep last night. Couldn't workout why. Maybe it was reading this thread half an hour before bed that done it! I was subconsciously on alert!

mumda · 18/04/2025 09:43

You need to identify where the rats are entering the system and gave it repaired.

At first I thought "could have been a not fully flushed long shaped poo" but nah..

OMG !!! I always use the loo at night in the dark and now, after reading this thread, I can't in case a rat bites my bum 🥺

Are you mad!?

I literally cannot do this, I have to do a rat check first. Luckily I don't need to pee in the night very often!

Cerialkiller · 18/04/2025 10:01

Renamed · 17/04/2025 23:44

Do you eat meat and fish? Something moving in the loo is possibly a round worm ( sorry)

Reading the title I wondered worm too. Might be worth looking into.

Rats are pretty extraordinary creatures, can survive being flushed down toilets, are excellent swimmers and can chew through nearly anything given enough time so rats does seem more likely. How well do you know your neighbours?

Could you ask around to see if there are problems with rats in the area? If they are coming up your pipes you are likely not the only one. Do you know where you are on the line to the sewer? If e.g. you are a top floor flat, very unlikely you would be the first effected.

Rodneynotdave · 18/04/2025 10:09

Immediately just been to the bathrooms and put the lids down! This happened in my mum's flat once years ago - the stuff of nightmares!

@Hohofortherobbers the vast amounts of paper would more than likely block the toilet but I suppose that would prevent the anaconda from storming the house in an insatiable frenzy of destruction

Can you imagine the movie 😂

Hwi · 18/04/2025 10:18

You need to make a GP appointment for a faecal test. Tapeworm?

Augustus40 · 18/04/2025 10:28

LavenderFields7 · 17/04/2025 23:03

Might have been tail of a rat

Yikes!

Are we keeping you up ….?

It could well be a rat, is the toilet downstairs? We had this and then heard it was very common especially in old houses with downstairs toilets like ours. We had to get the council out to eliminate the problem.
If it is an ongoing issue you will probably hear it squeaking while you are in the bathroom at some point! We didn't see the rat but could hear it in the u bend.

Squeaking in the u bend??
FFS! 😱

crumblingschools · 18/04/2025 10:44

We’ve just had rats in our loft and cavity walls (I was tempted to move out!)

When sitting on the toilet I was always worried that they might somehow get through the extractor fan in the ceiling, never for one moment thought they could come up through the toilet 😱

We have now got rid of them thank god.

Bitteralmond · 18/04/2025 10:49

I haven't read the whole thread, but if it is a rat, you can get a rat blocker fitted for your drains. My parents had a rat problem and got one fitted, then I had evidence of a rat coming up my toilet (bloodied streaks in a toilet with bleach in it), and had one fitted. It gives you peace of mind.

Abra1t · 18/04/2025 10:52

Hohofortherobbers · 17/04/2025 23:15

I'd flush it 20 times with heaps of bog roll to push it way back down and j would call th water board. Is it upstairs or downstairs. Upstairs feels more terrifying

You will add to your woes by blocking the loo with all that paper.

I thought they were nigh on impossible to get rid of? Did you use a company?

Also I have heard in London you are never more than ( two feet?) from a rat. 😬

Duffybearblue · 18/04/2025 10:56

When we were on holiday in Florida, in a single storey villa, I saw a large black snake in one of the toilets. I reached over to flush the loo and the snake disappeared back down the toilet. My DH wouldn't use that toilet again, it didn't really bother me at the time, I just assumed it wouldn't come back.

But on the last night, our son was playing with some cars on the floor of the lounge, I decided to check that none of his cars had rolled under the sofa, no cars, but a bloody great big black snake was curled up under there. We had to call the management company to come and get rid of it, the man they sent was just as scared of it as we were. No idea how long it had been there, but thank god it was our last night in that villa.

The owner said, the one way trap they are supposed to have on the sewer pipes had broken, allowing the snake to enter through the toilet.

We once had a very large frog appear in our dining room, I've always wondered how the hell it got there, maybe it got in from the loo.

Sportacus17 · 18/04/2025 11:12

Are you sure it wasn’t a shit?

GreenFriedTomato · 18/04/2025 11:19

mum2jakie · 18/04/2025 00:59

We did too!!!.Didn't realise until one of the kids pooed on it. Poor thing ended up covered in poo and then had to be flushed away!

Aw poor froggy..That's made me feel quite sad

Iloveyoubut · 18/04/2025 11:31

Well thank god we all worry about rats in the toilet now! We can only hope the media picks up on this. Lucky it’s a very hot topic.

thestudio · 18/04/2025 11:40

OP this means that one of your non-return valves on the main waste pipe is broken or non existent.

You really need to get it fixed or it could happen again.

You can also have rat guards put in.

I live in Wolverhampton. Why did you have to post that?

Zebedee999 · 18/04/2025 11:42

FloppySarnie · 17/04/2025 23:10

Keep the lid closed AND put something heavy on it! Definitely more likely to be a rat than a snake…..

Best advice

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 18/04/2025 11:45

tiredtootired · 17/04/2025 23:13

I’ve closed the lid and am too scared to open it back up anyway.

I was honestly hoping she just imagined it or made it up.
is it going to just go away on its own?

Closing the lid isn’t enough. Especially if it’s one of those modern, plastic ones. A rat can easily lift that up. You need to put something heavy on it. I would strongly encourage you to put something heavy on the lids of all your loos.

have a look around your house to check whether there are any signs of rats!

WhatShoes4me · 18/04/2025 11:46

@tiredtootired did dd draw that on the computer?
