Dd(8) just screamed from the toilet, she says there was a black snakes tail moving about. She drew the photo.

nothing by the time I got there, I’ve flushed it.

Is that possible? What do I do? DH is at work

Am I the only person that would tell the child to go back to bed and assume that they imagine it?

Also this. I thought the thread would be full of this.

Redburnett · 17/04/2025 23:17

I thought the rubbish that keeps popping up on my social media was bad enough......I despair of the next generation being capable of producing people to run the country .......
This is England, toilets flush, the contents go down to sewers, you are not going to be bitten by a hald-drowned adder (our only native poisonous snake).

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 17/04/2025 23:17

@Hohofortherobbers the vast amounts of paper would more than likely block the toilet but I suppose that would prevent the anaconda from storming the house in an insatiable frenzy of destruction

Lid down, flush, flush, flush and send your daughter to art classes if the story telling ones are full up.

Summertimeblahness · 17/04/2025 23:19

Teenage mutant ninja turtles?

Melody32 · 17/04/2025 23:21

Oh God why did I read this lol. Definitely keep the lid down or pour chemical down it and flush like 5 times and lid on again.

Lilylouis · 17/04/2025 23:24

Add a bottle of bleach to every toilet you have.

Goldenbear · 17/04/2025 23:25

Looks like a rat tail.

Goldenbear · 17/04/2025 23:26

Can slow worms get into toilets, do they survive?

GarlicSmile · 17/04/2025 23:28

It was definitely not a skinny, black snake. It may have been the product of a sleepy child's imagination. It might have been a rat.

I'm going with sleepy child but, if you're worried about a rat, chuck a shedload of bleach or vinegar down the loo (not both) and put something heavy on the lid. Rats don't like sharp smells, though they do get used to them (so it wouldn't work long term, if anyone's wondering). Also pour bleach/vinegar down the bathroom plug holes and put the plugs in.

You could try calling your water board tomorrow to ask if there's a rat problem where you live. The little buggers are everywhere all the time, but it's still unlikely they'd be invading people's toilets - there's enough food & shelter for them in places that don't call for swimming uphill in narrow pipes.

Goldenbear · 17/04/2025 23:29

Slow worms can swim but not very well apparently and they try to get out on to land as soon as possible. We had one literally fall into our garden from height as have staggered garde and live near a woods, my teen won't really go into the garden now 😬 They are protected species.

BornSandyDevotional · 17/04/2025 23:31

She's copied a drawing.

Why did she draw it? In a heavily styalised way? With a frame?

She didn't see anything.

It's a poor drawing.

Move on?

ItsMutinyontheBunty · 17/04/2025 23:31

I’d have thought a slow worm would be more likely? Was it a downstairs loo?

Yes, I mean I have seen two now I'm in Sussex and they both look like that tail on your drawing.

What's the quality of the drawing by an 8 year old got to do with anything?

I saw something like that in my toilet when I returned from being away for a while ( 2 weeks) but it was about 2 inches long, did she describe its length?
I flushed it away ( there were actually a few) and haven’t seen them since

That's a light bulb?

Thiscouldbefun · 17/04/2025 23:40

If you live in a city with a downstairs loo close to sewer line, then I’m afraid it could well be a rat. Had this issue in UK major city in our old house.

we moved

hereismydog · 17/04/2025 23:43

Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherfucking snakes in this motherfucking toilet.

Or whatever the line was

Renamed · 17/04/2025 23:44

Do you eat meat and fish? Something moving in the loo is possibly a round worm ( sorry)

CanadianJohn · 17/04/2025 23:46

We have a toilet in our basement, and I've always been worried that a rat might swim up the sewer line. I'm terrified of rats.

A few years ago, we had an anti-backup valve installed in the sewer line, ostensibly to prevent the sewer line backing up into the house, but really to provide a significant obstacle to a rat.

1415isgreat · 17/04/2025 23:48

Read this whilst sat on the toilet and I have never gotten of the toilet faster 🤣

Trytryagain25 · 17/04/2025 23:53

Rats don't generally have black tails. They're more flesh coloured.

I've heard of snakes coming up through the loo.

Put a note on your local Facebook group - incase anyone is missing a pet snake.

I’ve closed the lid and am too scared to open it back up anyway.

I was honestly hoping she just imagined it or made it up.
is it going to just go away on its own?

Contact Pest Interceptors, they can place a mechanism on your sewer pipe that stops rats from coming up through the pipe. They will rid your home of rats for good. I've no affiliation to them by the way!
