Dd(8) just screamed from the toilet, she says there was a black snakes tail moving about. She drew the photo.

nothing by the time I got there, I’ve flushed it.

Is that possible? What do I do? DH is at work

Great, I can add Toilet Rats to my list of fears.

I grew up with hamsters and guinea pigs as pets so I'm a big fan of rodents but wild rats are something else. I was on my way to work a few weeks ago when a rat ran across the road, and I thought it was going to pull a knife and carjack me. The thing was HUGE 😳

You know those awful icebreakers - tell us your name and an interesting fact about yourself.

This man with his "I was once sitting on the loo and a 12 foot python bit me on the testicles" fact would just unbeatably reduce the room to silence.

Can you imagine the movie 😂

I read James Herbert's book a long time ago.

I agree that it was most likely a rat tail. Get a drainage person in to check if the interceptor valve at the sewer drain (might also be known as a rat flap) has been left open. If not then there’s potentially a rat nest somewhere else and you need to have the pipe work checked for damage as it has somehow got into your sewage pipe.

I'd flush it 20 times with heaps of bog roll to push it way back down and j would call th water board. Is it upstairs or downstairs. Upstairs feels more terrifying

Call the what now?

Are you mad!?

I literally cannot do this, I have to do a rat check first. Luckily I don't need to pee in the night very often!

A rat in the loo has never crossed my mind until now 😭😭😭😭

LavenderFields7 · 17/04/2025 23:03

Might have been tail of a rat

This is possibly as there are defo loads in the sewers. Or could it be an eel? I'm thinking more likely a rat.

You could try calling your water board tomorrow to ask if there's a rat problem where you live

There are rats everywhere.

Our water board takes no interest in or responsibility for rats.

Rats don't generally have black tails. They're more flesh coloured.

I've heard of snakes coming up through the loo.

Put a note on your local Facebook group - incase anyone is missing a pet snake.

God thats true tho. Theyre like pinky coloured tails

VexedofVirginiaWater · 18/04/2025 13:42

Ooh I'm sorry but I have to tell you the tale of my Nanna in the 50s/60s who went to her outside toilet, and - after she had had a wee - discovered a dead rat in it. 😱 She told me to always check before I go! (Thanks Nanna!)

JillAndJenTheFlowerpotMen · 18/04/2025 13:49

It’s probably a shark.

It’s tail could be black if it has dragged it through something in the sewer though!

CoolPlayer · 18/04/2025 14:04

Am I the only one who would rather have a snake than a rat? 😂either way I won’t be relaxing while having a wee any time soon..

IdaArnold · 18/04/2025 16:24

We moved house and found there were rats in the toilet in the downstairs bathroom. They’d eaten through the plastic pipes. Had to get a pest controller out and have the plumbing replaced. I don’t think it’s that uncommon.

Holdonforsummer · 18/04/2025 16:45

Giant tapeworms? 😃

More likely a kraken, they have tentacles don't you know.

CustardySergeant · 18/04/2025 17:12

AthWat · 18/04/2025 08:57

They might look black after they have been swimming about in the sewers for a while.

🤢

Louisiannadaisy · 19/04/2025 18:01

Put a weight on the lid when not in use. When we lived in Cumbria we got rats coming up my sons en-suite and the downstairs loo. We did have a fresh water steam that ran through our garden. But yes they come up your loo and climb out into your house. So a weight on top and plenty of bleach.

SimpleSister · 19/04/2025 18:08

Was it a snark or merely a boojum?

Calliopespa · 19/04/2025 18:53

Pinkywoo · 18/04/2025 17:03

🤣 That’s actually terrifying!

Mumoftwoandcats · 19/04/2025 18:55

I would definitely consider the possibility she's imagined it, or could even be a wee issue that might need an opticians?

Incognito1975 · 19/04/2025 19:12

Do you think someone in the household might have worms?
