Eurgh rats make me shiver. Myself and ds was at the local hospital walking from one building to another, and right there on the pavement was a dead rat with 3 baby rats feasting on it, literally rummaging around in its stomach 🤢 omg we are both still traumatised from that image !!

HeySnoodie · 18/04/2025 05:13

i popped to the loo in my local cafe and found a light coloured stringy worm thing in the loo, I recon it was some kind of parasite from the person who last had a poo

We have one in our stables. I say one, who knows. I never see it.

My cat has killed a few babies in the past and brought them to me (bengal) through the kitchen window (nice) or left them at the door outside. He’s killed the few odd big ones too.

They do have long tails.

I don’t stare long enough though to take note - I’m usually screaming at the husband to get rid of it.

My other two cats just sit my the fire or on the windowsills, but they are normal cats and are super lazy and not bengal. I doubt they’d blink if a rat came up the toilet.

My bengal sleeps with me and I think I’ll be encouraging him to continue!!

The tail of a rat in the toilet! Oh my goodness the very thought of that is terrifying.
Are rats in the toilet " a thing"?

I have heard of snakes in the toilet. One of the reasons I'll never use the loo at night without the bathroom light being on.

Edited

Yes, rats occasionally come up from the sewer and are trapped in the toilet. The local council used to send a pest control operative round to sort it, free (paid for out of the council tax or 'rates' as it used to be, in private dwellings). I don't know if that is still the case.

However, Seagreen, it is a very rare occurrence and not something I've ever experienced. I'd say look before you sit down :-).

TranceNation · 18/04/2025 06:02

This thread should be filed away in the 'it never happened' section.

Horses7 · 18/04/2025 06:02

Yikes - worse nightmare plus I didn’t know rat blockers were a thing either. I’ll sleep well tonight!

Hemlocked · 18/04/2025 06:08

Sorry but it reminds me of the time my brother woke us all up screaming that he'd found giant woodlice in his bed. In our sleepy panicked states we frantically started searching for them in the covers and under the bed before it collectively dawned on us that giant woodlice probably didn't exist.

JoyousEagle · 18/04/2025 06:09

Summertimeblahness · 17/04/2025 23:16

Am I the only person that would tell the child to go back to bed and assume that they imagine it?

Yes this is what I’d assume.

Although having said that, I was unaware of the possibility of toilet rats.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 18/04/2025 06:50

School holidays isn’t it. All the strange threads come out late and then the op doesn’t comment.

it didn’t happen.

NicolaDeLaHaye · 18/04/2025 06:57

It could have been the toilet goblin that I read about on a couple of threads earlier in the week ...

RustyRed · 18/04/2025 07:03

I once saw a big earthworm in the toilet. Still remember the horror of thinking it had somehow come from me - but turns out they can get into the plumbing through a cracked pipe.

EdithBond · 18/04/2025 07:12

tiredtootired · 17/04/2025 23:13

I’ve closed the lid and am too scared to open it back up anyway.

I was honestly hoping she just imagined it or made it up.
is it going to just go away on its own?

Squirt washing up liquid down it.

And that’s why you should always leave the toilet lid down at all times, including when flushing (spray). Any men who leave both lid and seat up should be shown this thread.

Wilfrida1 · 18/04/2025 07:20

Has she got worms?

AlmostAJillSandwich · 18/04/2025 07:20

Snake owner, can assure you any solid black coloured snake that would be in the UK is non venomous, IF it was a snake its likely a mexican black king, which is not native and would be someones escaped pet.

herbalteabag · 18/04/2025 07:31

WiddlinDiddlin · 18/04/2025 01:58

Snake - so unlikely as to be impossible in the UK.

Native snakes are not trying to get in our homes, they're happy with their own, and whilst they can climb to some degree depending on the object they're climbing/surface they're climbing, all the way up a foul drain to your toilet bowl is again nigh on impossible for our snakes.

Non-native snake is fractionally more likely but they're not seeking out cold wet foul drains/sewers, they want warmth, and underwater is not most snakes natural territory so you'd see a head poking out, not a tail disappearing.

Rat - possible, more likely if its a downstairs toilet, but again pretty rare and you're much more likely to have a soggy rat scrabbling desperately to get out once a route out is visible (ie, lifting the lid) than a tail trying to go back the way it came. Dead rat.. maybe but they tend to float belly up/butt up not 'everything but the tail round the U-bend'. A dead rat someone has flushed would jam and bob back up, or flush completely, again its not likely to be jammed with only the tail showing, then disappear.

Rats are not pretty rare and they don't struggle to get into the house, they easily go back down without drowning. When we got the council out they lifted a manhole cover in the garden and put down poison and sorted it out (I made a previous post about a rat in the toilet). There was evidence of rats down there. We lived in a row of Victorian houses and they said it's very common and weren't a bit surprised by it.

She's copied a drawing.

Why did she draw it? In a heavily styalised way? With a frame?

She didn't see anything.

It's a poor drawing.

Move on?

The 'frame' is the toilet

IamFrancine · 18/04/2025 07:44

Omfg. I thought talk of rats in snakes in toilets was made up. I lived in Australia for 18 years. Scary shit.

FigTreeInEurope · 18/04/2025 07:49

We had a rat in our toilet once. We are off grid for sewerage and it came up from the imhoff tank. What i will say is it was thrashing about in the toilet bowl, and you could hear the splashing and clawing from downstairs. It exited back up the u bend once i lifted the lid. They also absolutely stink, so i think you'd probably know if you'd had a rat in a small bathroom. Perfectly possible though, and i do now always check before sittihg down! If it troubles you, get some wire mesh, and put it over the waste outlet pipe.

AthWat · 18/04/2025 08:04

What an opportunity missed for a thread titled "There's a rat in me toilet what am I gonna do?"

pelargoniums · 18/04/2025 08:07

Oh, we had a toilet rat once! During lockdown. Barricaded shut the downstairs loo and took a live and let live approach.

SapporoBaby · 18/04/2025 08:17

If it was during the night she’s probably having night visions. Just when your brains half asleep it makes images from shadows - mine does it all the time. They feel incredibly real but they’re not

Yep, or a Russian rat snake. Mine is fully black at the narrowest part of his tail

SimpleSister · 18/04/2025 08:31

So if it was a rat, you need a terrier like a Jack Russell but if it was a snake you need a mongoose.
I hope they get on well.
