Dd(8) just screamed from the toilet, she says there was a black snakes tail moving about. She drew the photo.

nothing by the time I got there, I’ve flushed it.

Is that possible? What do I do? DH is at work

@AthWat I am not young but please explain.

It might have been a Slow worm, we used to get them in our garden. Google to see size

minnienono · 18/04/2025 08:39

Rats tails aren’t black in my experience. We had plenty in my wild overgrown (large) garden that were pretty sweet, and they had pinky flesh coloured tails, as did the mice that didn’t have the courtesy to stay in the garden!

I've reported you twice for advertising. You are clearly spamming across several threads.

Contact water board. It’s possible the cap has come off a nearby sewer.

Look in your garden. Any tell tale holes, particularly near drain covers?

Take the bath panel off. Any droppings?

Any other signs of infestation? Nibbled chocolate etc?

Oh god this reminds me of the time when DC was about 2, they claimed they saw a tiny hand poking out of the little overflow hole in the sink (like the one under the tap). They were very freaked out by this and even now, 6 years on it's mentioned fairly often. It gave me the creeps.

Did you add sugar, or were they naturally sweet?

She gonna fix that rat, that's what she gonna do....

UB40

Slow worms aren't going to go near sewers, or into houses.

A tiny hand sounds like a frog. Someone I know found a frog in the toilet after they'd flushed it. He didn't know whether it was already there and he'd done his business on it or it came down with the flush.

The tail of a rat in the toilet! Oh my goodness the very thought of that is terrifying.
Are rats in the toilet " a thing"?

I have heard of snakes in the toilet. One of the reasons I'll never use the loo at night without the bathroom light being on.

Edited

OMG !!! I always use the loo at night in the dark and now, after reading this thread, I can't in case a rat bites my bum 🥺

Thank you 😀. It's been ages since I listened to this and am now enjoying listening to UB40 whilst perusing Mumsnet.

They might look black after they have been swimming about in the sewers for a while.

A friend of mine was woken one night by her cat. Rigid with stress, wide panicked eyes, pawing at her chest.

As she woke, she heard a tapping noise and realised it was coming from the bathroom. A rat was in the loo and trying to push open the lid. She was half asleep and actually opened the lid!!!! 😱😱😱

Luckily it didn’t jump out so she weighed it down and it was gone by morning. She said it looked totally black, which might be due to the water? I do think a rat is far more likely than a snake.

Tell DD it was a big worm. That sounds far less scary I think?

I hope she had a word with the cat. Rigid with stress, indeed. They have one job!

Gettingbysomehow · 18/04/2025 09:08

Eek!!! I'm never using my toilet again. It's a bucket from now on.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 18/04/2025 09:12

If anyone wants to borrow a terrier...She's available for loan rent, very reasonable.

The downside is that you have to have my terrier in the house and, to be honest, I'd keep the rat.

Can slow worms get into toilets, do they survive?

Slow worms like hot sunny banks.

I would think possible rat, they do live in sewers and can swim really well. But I would play it right down for the child, 'look nothing there', or you could start a phobia.

Report it to the authority responsible for your sewage if you are convinced it was a rat.

FlowerFairy12 · 18/04/2025 09:33

Did you have to put this online?

BoiledOrRoastPotatoes · 18/04/2025 09:36

I had a clay sewer pipe replaced last year as it had cracked and was causing the toilets in my house and next door to back up. Previous to that I had found an earthworm in the toilet - hopefully it was just something like that. A lot less scary than a rat or a snake.
