Sky & BBC doing the usual "..but fears grow this wont continue as NI increases coming in" and i bet the more right wing press will not mention any of it, just as the 1500 extra GPs ignored/or rubbished.

Its a huge issue for Labour & one thats hard to counter.

Edited

As the US shows, facts are very much a secondary factor in peoples political views.

No10 sources confirm that parliament will sit tomorrow to debate the nationalisation of British Steel in Scunthorpe.

If it wasn't for the fact bookies won't take bets on dead cert, you could make a mint betting that no Reform MPs will be there. Although I guess learning Arabic - like Russian - is a full time hobby.

The MP for Clacton is a bit busy with his 10th job, commentator for Sky News Australia.

As that points out, he’d be out by now if he stopped repeating the libel that got him put in there. Easy fix.

PandoraSox · 11/04/2025 16:32

Boo hoo.

Karistyleaftea · 11/04/2025 17:01

I've been to Clacton today (first time ever) and thankfully Farage was not seen.
The press RW bias is a difficulty for our Govt but I don't think they can do anything about it.
It is the money talking.
Even if someone with the best ever CV on "spin" capability joined the Labour comms team it would not change much .
I approve wholeheartedly of Labour just getting on with the job .

DuncinToffee · 11/04/2025 17:27

The House of Lords is also to be recalled over the future of British Steel

This ‘right-wing bias’ is fascinating. Does it include the BBC and ITN? Does it include The Guardian, Mirror or Byline Times? The last is a laughable load of nonsense that only a fool would take seriously, granted, but what about the others?

I guess we can also conclude from this thread that all economic results are by now caused by this government and not by its predecessors.

Good economic news for the government. Credit where credit’s due.

The rules are:

Good economic news is the result of the Government
Poor economic news is external causes.

This applies to any Government in power. Clearly any Opposition thinks the opposite.

DuncinToffee · 11/04/2025 17:39

Farage is backing the nationalisation of British Steel and has been campaigning on it this week so I expect him to show up

The Greens and Lib dems are in support as well

Recalling HoC and HoL, having debates and getting people on the record is a good plan.

PandoraSox · 11/04/2025 17:42

Frog face will probably claim the credit if it does happen.

Tell you what, mate. Why don't you try and find out what happened to the 6 million + signature petition that was calling for a second referendum on the government website. A good way to start would be to use a tool that correlates number of stories against number of signatures on government petitions.

If there is little or no bias in "the news" then you would expect the ranking of stories to follow the number of signatures.

Only they don't.

That immediately tells you that "news" and "news reported on" aren't actually directly proportional.

If you like your data big and bouncy, feel free to add in an extra dimension of viewers reached.

It's amazing what you can do with data, if you want. Although it's actually getting to be more amazing what isn't being done with data even though you can.

The BBC exists for the right wing to threaten to remove it's charter. It plays well with a certain voters. Over the last decade I suspect it overcompensated to neutralise that explicit threat.
Richard Sharp did donate to the Conservative Party and was a director at Centre of Policy Studies. Robbie Gibb worked for Francis Maude and Theresa May and tweeted his support for Brexit whilst working at the BBC. He was also involved in raising funds for GBNews. Tim Davie of course ran as Conservative candidate in local elections. I also note Justin Webb's recent output for the Telegraph.
Do I think their politics may have filtered through to their newsroom? I can imagine how that might happen or atleast how influence from the top down might play its part. Certainly ex-BBC journalists seem to think so although obviously their experiences will be viewed meaningless by some.

But Gary Lineker and Chris Packham etc etc are obviously the real threat to BBC impartiality - thats where the real scandal lies 🙄

Whatever that means - which I suspect is not a lot - it doesn’t answer anything. Nobody thinks that news coverage in any outlet reflects ‘data’: it reflects editorial judgement. Petitions are not usually newsworthy, even ones - shock! - about the EU.

There is plenty of media edited from a left-wing perspective. And the bigger ‘right-wing’ newspapers didn’t and don’t shun positive news about Labour or negative news about the Tories anyway. Choice of subjects for opinion pieces in different papers will vary, obviously.

There’s a touch of the conspiracy theory about complaints of media bias. It’s fair enough to question a paper or, say, the BBC on a particular story, but Labour is not being misrepresented by the media generally.

Well electoral reform was supposed to be one of Reforms key priorities - you know all that cobblers about "We had x million votes and all we got were 5 lousy seats".

Only the number of debates any Reform MPs have attended on electoral reform is .... zero.

But that really just continues the theme set when Farage was an MEP and turned up to zero debates on fishing.

The local elections will be intersting.

In some ways I would like Reform to take control of a council. It would be a helpful indication of (un)fitness to govern. But at the same time I don't want to inflict that on anyone.

If people vote for them, they inflict them on themselves.

Just prepare for the 'not all reform voters are racist' rhetoric

@LittleBowSheep happy days for you 🍾🎉
also have an Irish passport one more reason I’m grateful to my parents.
I dunno even if no media bias exists, it does feel a lot of the time as though Labour are pushing a very big boulder up a hill & a lot of the good things they have achieved aren’t widely reported maybe it depends if you lean right or left
i remember the Mail headline the day after the Truss budget proclaiming that it was a true conservative budget wtf was that about.
really sorry reading about posters with eye problems, do hope that everyone receives the treatment they need🫰
itsgettingweird really sorry that your housing situation is causing issues & concerns especially if the organisation that are meant to be helping make you feel as they don’t give a damm.

BIossomtoes · 11/04/2025 19:30

Is there? Any examples other than the Mirror? Because the Guardian certainly isn’t.

Karistyleaftea · 11/04/2025 19:30

@Rummly I disagree,
I do feel there absolutely is right wing media bias, very obvious indeed with the BBC in particular.
Have a look at QT or LK on a sunday,
I do sometimes have to stifle my own laughter when I watch Fiona Bruce's "sneery" face if she disagrees with what a Labour MP is saying.
And her constant interruptions, dear me!
