Emma Bridgewater mug handles keep dropping off!

Earlier posts on the same subject are a bit old now.
I love EB mugs and have bought 14/15 but I’m now down to about 7. The handles simply drop off. At £25 each I think this is ridiculous.
I emailed EB pointing out the weakness, making it clear I was not seeking recompense but telling them I am no longer collecting them.

I received a reply explaining their quality control. Not much help.
if anyone else has had the same experience please contribute to the thread and I shall advise EB to have a look at your responses.
Many thanks.

OK, I've looked at my 6 (3 sets of "pairs").

The older ones have a "dimple" where the lower part of the handle is attached to the mug.
The newest one has a smooth interior, no "dimple" mark.

I'm positive I read (so knew) that placing a mug upside down with the weight on the handle may cause the handle to break of the mug and I think I read it here, years ago.

Sevendust · 30/03/2025 07:39

I bought a set of 8 of them around 10 years ago, plus another 4 at various points since... Have had one handle come off, so that one is now a plant pot. All of the others are still as good as new though. Seems I'm lucky!

It's really worrying to think what could happen if a handle came off a mug full of scalding liquid. Has anyone sent a link to this thread to EB? I too think it should be looked at by Trading Standards if it's such a wide issue, and EB aren't doing anything about it.

Thank you to all the people who have helped me understand that my EB mugs losing their handles, when other mugs treated in the same way didn't, wasn't a result of me doing something wrong. It's sad because some of them are so pretty.

Bandol · 31/03/2025 10:25

Ugh, DH accidentally clipped the rim of my favourite EB mug (used for my morning tea everyday) with the EB butter dish and knocked out a big chip out of the rim of my mug.

(no handles falling off but I thought you’d be a sympathetic audience for this morning’s tale of woe).

Look what happened to me this morning ... Not happy and my clothes covered in coffee

Bloody hell! This is ridiculous, isn’t it?
I’ve stopped using mine, as they clearly can’t be trusted 🙄

Yikes! I’ve never had a EB mug but I feel invested in this thread as they are such a well known brand, and they aren’t exactly cheap, so this seems completely outrageous that there is a well known problem and they won’t address it.

I had to zoom in on your shards as I was wondering why on earth you would want a mug adorned with lard and speculating whether it was a part of the beef dripping range.

lolly792 · 01/04/2025 16:21

Same here, almost scalded myself recently. I won’t buy EB any more : not just mugs, I won’t buy bowls or plates now as it’s really irresponsible of the company. People could be really badly burnt. I’ve always washed the (few) items I have by hand as well. All my less expensive crockery is fine

RosieMilkJug · 01/04/2025 16:25

My poor DH. I’ve been blaming him for putting them in the dishwasher carelessly. We’ve gone through at least 6 of them.

And fgs don’t put an Emma Bridgwater mug into a microwave otherwise you’ll get second degree burns.

RosieMilkJug · 01/04/2025 16:28

It’s metal in the glaze, apparently, which makes the mug hotter than the liquid.

Oldandcobwebby · 01/04/2025 16:33

Never mind the handles falling off; it's the bulbous base I hate. If you want to carry two cups with one hand, that stupid design stops you (unless you want to spill everything). And don't get me started on the crappy, twee designs! Absolute rubbish.

TwilightAb · 01/04/2025 16:35

I've got a few and has never happened to mine. Are you putting them in the dishwasher as they are not dishwasher safe.

They are, according to the Emma Bridgewater website.

That can’t be true surely!

Well I wash mine by hand and haven't had any handles come off yet.

That’s v similar to my incident last week! Maybe all the EB mugs are rebelling at once?

This is terrible, must have been frightening too.

I won't be buying any more and now tempted to just throw my chipped ones to get rid

ChiaraRimini · 02/04/2025 08:13

Yes this happened to loads of mine. They were bought between 5 and 10 years ago so not a new thing. Also one of my DSs is clumsy and has broken a few. I have had 18 in total and only have two left.

LivelyFinch · 02/04/2025 09:16

Love EB mugs but have stopped buying them for the same reason. Also my newer ones don't keep the drinks as hot. They chip really easily as well, all hand washed as I don't have a dishwasher.

CountryQueen · 02/04/2025 09:17

This is so dangerous. They know of the issue yet are ignoring it. Shocking.

DeanElderberry · 02/04/2025 09:51

It really is shocking that so many of us have been scammed into buying expensive but disgracefully shoddy products because they look pretty and are a nice size.

Clever though, I must concede.

I am so relieved this thread arrived now - I have a little money on the way and had been planning to go mad with it and buy a few EB mugs. I got a very nice mimosa-patterned big mug (not EB) in TK Maxx a few weeks ago - I wonder whether there are any left.
