Emma Bridgewater mug handles keep dropping off!

Earlier posts on the same subject are a bit old now.
I love EB mugs and have bought 14/15 but I’m now down to about 7. The handles simply drop off. At £25 each I think this is ridiculous.
I emailed EB pointing out the weakness, making it clear I was not seeking recompense but telling them I am no longer collecting them.

I received a reply explaining their quality control. Not much help.
if anyone else has had the same experience please contribute to the thread and I shall advise EB to have a look at your responses.
Many thanks.

I’ve got quite a few EB mugs, had them for quite a few years, always wash in the dishwasher and never had a problem. But like a PP mine are all seconds as I think they’re outrageously expensive!

ThePoshUns · 28/03/2025 01:14

Definitely not worth the money. I have had 2 in the past and yes the handle came off both. I hadn’t realised it was so common. Shame as they are such nice looking pieces. Wouldn’t buy again.

Elektra1 · 28/03/2025 05:56

This has happened to me too. I used to have a lot 8 of them and love them as the shape is perfect for a cup of tea. But at £25 a go I have stopped replacing them. You can buy beautiful hand-thrown mugs from independent potters for the same price

I have maybe 50 (possibly more, I haven't actually counted) of them and none have broken, touch wood. But I'd already decided I'm definitely not going to buy any more.

They're a good size for a cuppa and kind of fun/sweet but the prices really are a bit much. I have never paid full price.

They are made in a mould.

Of they're poured into mould then the body of the mug must be too heavy for the handle and therefore puts pressure on it. Denby all the way as they add the handles.

AnotherHappyCamper · 28/03/2025 08:06

Yes I've decided to change over at some point but for now they are going strong.

Thisbastardcomputer · 28/03/2025 08:09

Yes l agree, it’s happened to many of mine. They are pretty useless and I’ve had many free items from EB, ordered an enamel gravy jug, got sent a colander, complained, told to keep it and they’d send the gravy jug. Got another colander and two small meat trays and finally they sent the gravy jug, so four free items.

FlappyBat · 28/03/2025 08:31

This has happened to me lots of times, and I think it’s because they don’t like the microwave. I heat lattes is in the microwave every morning, and it’s always the ones I use for lattes that lose their handles. I won’t buy them anymore either.

AnotherHappyCamper · 28/03/2025 08:42

Yes they do say quite clearly not to use them in the microwave, but I still do.

Serpentstooth · 28/03/2025 08:53

This is quite worrying, who wants half a pint of boiling tea dropped in their lap? I haven't got any EB mugs but given the number of you reporting this issue, it's probably one for Trading Standards. Goods sold have to be 'fit for purpose' and EB is ignoring the matter whilst making a lot of money from their overpriced goods.

I have had several lose handles over the years but none since I started storing them upright after I noticed the handle is taller than the mug. Like a previous poster, I think storing them upside down puts pressure on the handle over time and weakens it.

I never stored mine upside down, it sat upright on the shelf. And I don’t own a dishwasher , but the handle still dropped off after a couple of years. I’ve had cheap mugs from supermarkets still going strong for 10 years or so 🤷‍♀️

Never used mine in the microwave, still lost the handle

AnotherHappyCamper · 28/03/2025 09:09

I wonder if mine will start to fail at some point - thinking about it, my oldest ones are probably a couple of years old by now.

Yes it's quite dangerous for handles to be falling off mugs!

FatherFrosty · 28/03/2025 09:19

I stopped buying/ asking for them about 10 years ago as this just kept happening

Chasingaces · 28/03/2025 10:03

I’ve got two in casualty corner at the moment waiting for husband to glue them… Confused

Good point.

buy the cheap mugs!

Allthegoodhorses · 28/03/2025 10:10

I'm the same as you OP. I have bought about 20 mugs over the years, and the handles have fallen off about 10. I have plenty of other mugs where this doesn't happen so it's nothing to do with the way I handle them. I complained bitterly to EB and got nowhere. They do guarantee the mugs for two years and have a pattern on the bottom to denote the year of manufacture and surprise surprise all my mugs with handles fallen off were older than two years. I buy Le Crueset now and will never buy an EB mug again.

I like character mugs but the price is mad.

I'm drinking out of an old Halloween mug bought years ago at Asda. It's still going strong. DH will only use bone china. Handles go and they crack.

TheTwirlyPoos · 28/03/2025 10:13

Yep same here. Don't buy them anymore.

If anybody wants another alternative, I LOVE the Le Creuset mugs. Have 9 or 10 of them in a variety of lovely colours, they are sturdy and weighty, and bombproof - we've had them years now, they are used every single day, in the dishwasher every single day - and they're as good as the day they were bought. Worth every penny, and I often buy them as housewarming presents for others now.
None of our other mugs get used unless under duress!

Thanks for this, I have just switched to Le Crueset after EB because the handles kept falling off. I love them, got some gorgeous colours.

MerryBeret · 28/03/2025 10:24

hattie43 · 27/03/2025 16:26

I’ve got about 10 of them and it’s happened once so has never been a red flag about buying more .

1 in ten handles dropping off is quite a high rate!

I've never ever had it happen with any other mugs or cups and I have some that were bought in the 80s.

NotMeNoNo · 28/03/2025 10:31

Denby and Le Creuset pottery is stoneware as well which is a stronger type of clay/firing than EB's earthenware. All ceramics are definitely not the same.

AnotherHappyCamper · 28/03/2025 10:33

Oh yes Le Creuset is vastly superior.

suburburban · 28/03/2025 10:36

I liked the Laura Ashley ones when it was a shop and also Cath Kidston but some of the latter do chip

the EB ones seem quite chunky to me. Bad designs if handles fall off.

never had a mug where a handle fell off just some tended to chip on rim
