I have fucked up holiday

I booked a holiday in tunisa. I have never been abroad before as an adult. I did not know tunisa is not a safe place to go. I didn't even know you could look it up. I just thought that if its not safe that all flights to that area stop . But that's not the case . I tried changing it but they told me I can't because airline operator do not go to the area I want . Its with tunisa airlines so basically it only gos to tunisa? . So i can't go change to a different destination. But unless I pay a load of money I can't cancel either.

Just to add . I do have learning difficulties. Which is probably why I did not realise all of this . I'm so pissed of

Of course it's safe - I keep reading articles recommending Tunisia, and it sounds fab.
Don't be influenced by people who are scared by their own shadows, OP, and just go and have a lovely holiday.

KellySeveride · 21/03/2025 16:28

OP you don’t even need to worry about covering up too much. We went to Tunisia when it first opened back up after the shootings. I wandered round in shorts and T-shirts the whole time we were there. If you visit a mosque then understandably you would need to be modest. But in the town it’s fine to be in shorts and top.

I didn't even know you could look it up.

What do you mean by this? Do you mean you weren't aware that you could research Tunisia on the Internet?

Don't be a wanker, @pinkyredrose . She said in her OP that she has learning difficulties, why be nasty to someone who is already struggling?

@Youagain2025 , the area of Tunisia you are travelling to is as safe as any other tourist area. My daughters boyfriend goes to Tunisia most years with his family. They are happy lounging by the pool, messing about in the sea, and eating and drinking loads. What sort of things do you like to do on holiday?

Sugarfish · 21/03/2025 16:30

You’ll be fine op and you’ll probably really enjoy it. Yes it has some unsafe areas, and there was a horrific terrorist attack at a hotel a few years ago, but attacks have also happened recently in Manchester, London, and Paris. I used to be a rep in Morocco, and whilst it’s a bit more relaxed than Tunisia it still had a reputation as being unsafe, and difficult to live in due to it being a Muslim country but I absolutely loved it. I’ve had mates who worked in Tunisia and they had a great time. Loads of British tourists go year after year.
You do need to watch out for the young lads trying to chat you up. That is a thing! As far as covering up you can wear what you like in the hotel but dress as if you were going to church when outside. You don’t need a full headscarf or anything but just cover up legs, cleavage, stomach and shoulders. If you do day trips book them through your holiday rep or hotel.

CalleOcho · 21/03/2025 16:31

Don’t beat yourself up about it OP 💐

I’ve never been to Tunisia personally, but know people who have and have loved it.

As previous posters have said- if you stick to your hotel and resort you’ll be absolutely fine. And you have hotel transfers - so you will be extra safe rather than getting random taxis.

A lot of people deem the UK an “unsafe country” as we also have terrorist incidents in the (not so distant) past, knife crime and muggings in big cities. I’m sure most of us in the UK feel safe.

I hope you all enjoy the holiday!

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 21/03/2025 15:09

Why do you pick up on that post instead of all the posts reassuring you that it’s fine?

I was on the school run abd just hapoen to see that post. I'm reading through others now. But if I could I would refund that would be my first choice.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/03/2025 16:34

Have you got the passports delivered already?

PhilippaGeorgiou · 21/03/2025 16:34

Just to say - and I am not suggesting anyone do it - but we got a little lost last time I was there and strayed into one of the "unsafe areas". It's the last time I let my friends husband map read. But just to say... there was nobody in! Literally. We knew we'd strayed there because we saw a road sign saying that the Algerian border was a few hundred yards "that way". We just kept going along the road. Nobody was there. It was the biggest non-event of my life.

333FionaG · 21/03/2025 16:36

You haven't fucked up, Hammamet is a lovely resort, catering for tourists. We stayed there with our DC a few years ago, and everyone was friendly, albeit a little too enthusiastic, when trying to sell us fake Rolex watches and bracelets made of seashells.

recipientofraspberries · 21/03/2025 16:36

Are you travelling with others, OP?

JellyBeanSpring25 · 21/03/2025 16:36

why have you changed your mind OP @Youagain2025?

what specifically is worrying you?

please don’t fret, you’ll have a great time. Take all the normal precautions when away from home in an unfamiliar place and it’ll be just fine.

theDudesmummy · 21/03/2025 16:36

OP, what has changed your mind between making the booking and now?

ParrotParty · 21/03/2025 16:37

Going to a resort is fine. Just dress modestly.
The resort wouldn't still be open if it wasn't busy.

notacooldad · 21/03/2025 16:39

But if I could I would refund that would be my first choice
Why though.
You are going to a lovely hotel in a fabulous area with great weather. What's not to like?
As previous posters have said- if you stick to your hotel and resort you’ll be absolutely fine.
Why limit yourself to the resort? She's not going to Afghanistan. There's no harm in getting the train to the city or a taxi or bus to the next town and trying different restaurants.
I just don't get the angst about Tunisia.

I think OP meant she wasn't aware that the Foreign & Commonwealth Office publishes its travel advice on its own .gov pages and if they advise not to travel to a particular country, or area of a country, then you shouldn't. However, Hammamet is not deemed unsafe by the FCO: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tunisia

I went to Hammamet years ago, you’ll be fine, there’s risks wherever you go………even London these days……….

PhilippaGeorgiou · 21/03/2025 16:17

Don't go mad - most of them do not wear "Islamic dress". Don't wear your bikini around town. Cropped leggings, skirt, T-shirt is fine. Take long sleeves (to protect from sun) when wondering around. If you are going into a mosque they will provide you with modest cover - but a scarf over your head, long sleeves and covered ankles (long trousers or skirt) are generally acceptable.

I'm so confused. So if I'm litterly just staying in the resort by the pool. And maybe go to the beach . Can I wear shorts and top ? Do I (have) to wear long sleeves? Can I wear a basic type swim suit . Do I have to keep shoulder's covered . Do I have to be careful if there's a small amount of cleverage on show or anything like that .

OP posts:
KnickerFolder · 21/03/2025 16:50

@Youagain2025 The US government equivalent of the FCO travel advice website rates Tunisia and the UK at the same level for risks, if that helps put it into perspective? You can get some lovely tiles or pottery for your colourful home! 😂

Beach wear is fine in the resort. You can wear a normal swimsuit, shorts and vest top. If you are sightseeing, it’s best to keep arms and legs covered (long sleeves/trousers/long skirts) but short sleeves and capri pants/below the knee skirts are okay. No vest tops or shorts or bare shoulders. If you are visiting religious sites, you need long sleeves, a long skirt and a scarf to cover your hair.

Don’t stress! It will be fine.

No. All of this will be fine. Just throw on a cover up before heading to beach cafe or walking around hotel, rather than swimwear.

Shorts and t shirts fine for resort and beach.

Wintersgirl · 21/03/2025 16:53

Try not to stress OP, your holiday looks great and beats the UK for weather at the moment! I promise you the big holiday companies wouldn't go there if it was totally unsafe, just relax on a sunbed grab a book and relax, you won't be the only British person in the hotel either.

I have never been to church in my life is would probably set on fire 😭. So if I go to the beach I would have to wear leggings and a t-shirt ?

Why?

Literally everyone apart from one or two posters have told you that it’s fine. What was the point in posting if you ignore all the comments?

KnickerFolder · 21/03/2025 16:57

I would add, it is better not to wear shorts or a vest top in the hotel restaurant. I guess cover up in the restaurant in a suitable for work way. You wouldn’t be showing lots of cleavage or your midriff or wear shorts to work in (most offices).

The risk of the UK having a terror attack at the moment is Substantial according to the Home Office....
