I have fucked up holiday

I booked a holiday in tunisa. I have never been abroad before as an adult. I did not know tunisa is not a safe place to go. I didn't even know you could look it up. I just thought that if its not safe that all flights to that area stop . But that's not the case . I tried changing it but they told me I can't because airline operator do not go to the area I want . Its with tunisa airlines so basically it only gos to tunisa? . So i can't go change to a different destination. But unless I pay a load of money I can't cancel either.

Just to add . I do have learning difficulties. Which is probably why I did not realise all of this . I'm so pissed of

I think it's fine, none of my friends that have been had any issues. I've been to Israel on when there's been unrest and that was fine too, just got to keep doing life

DenholmElliot11 · 21/03/2025 14:32

Honestly I would just cancel.

You won't have to pay anything, they'll just not refund the whole amount thats all.

That money is already spent so you won't have to spend any more.

latelydaydreams · 21/03/2025 14:33

That text on the Gov website is a bit misleading at first glance. It advises against ALL travel to SOME parts.

if you look at the map underneath large parts are green for travel- just read the advice

mumonthehill · 21/03/2025 14:35

Ds went with his gf last year, stayed in a resort and had a very good time. Fab beach and food was ok. I think you will be fine.

Well there was a mass shooting in a beach hotel in Sousse in 2015
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Sousse_attacks
but I would imagine that would have served to make the authorities tighten up security. Personally I wouldn’t fancy a holiday where you’re advised not to leave the compound but each to his own. I think you’ll just have to make the best of it.

I think you've missed the whole point. The op isn't saying that is the type of holiday she wants. Unfortunately through not understanding she has booked a holiday that is not one where you can go off and explore independently if you arent an experienced travell. Other posters are reassuring her that, because she cant cancel, she will still be able to have a nice holiday staying in the resort. There is no need to be so snippy.

ChanceMet · 21/03/2025 14:36

You'll be fine in a tourist resort, OP.

UpMyself · 21/03/2025 14:38

I've been to Tunisia a few times and would go again. Loved it.

I went exploring a bit in Sousse, alone, and didn't get hassled.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 21/03/2025 14:39

You will be ok in that tourist resort OP. It is only the areas of Tunisia that are in red that the FCO advises against travelling to.

Barleysugar86 · 21/03/2025 14:40

Hi Op, you will be absolutely fine with what you have booked I'm sure, it's 10 years since the awful beach attack- many European countries have had more recent attacks and we still travel there. No doubt the resorts really amped up their security. My Mum had a great holiday in Tunisia a couple of years ago. Keep your wits about you if you go far from the resort but otherwise I would absolutely still visit the country. I haven't been to Tunisa yet but we went to Morocco, they had a terrorist attack on the main tourist square in Marrakech once, and Bali, ditto with a nightclub, and New York with 9/11, not to mention UK has had it's fair share of them too (I use the tube daily to get to work).

Rh0dedenr0n · 21/03/2025 14:41

Hammamet is completely safe. We went last year.

YouveGotAFastCar · 21/03/2025 14:41

Ellie1015 · 21/03/2025 14:13

If gov.uk link is advising against travel perhaps your insurance will cover the costs that are nonrefundable? Did you book a while ago?

Not if the FCO was advising against travel when she booked.

There have also been terrorist attacks in the UK, France, Germany…

Scutterbug · 21/03/2025 14:42

My son went last year and had an amazing time x

ChinaChina · 21/03/2025 14:42

I went the year before last on my own and had a lovely trip. I booked excursions through Tui and Musement and I also had lots of spa treatments.

LilacPeer · 21/03/2025 14:43

It will be absolutely fine, we had a holiday booked to tunisia for the summer but Ive changed it because the kids found another hotel they preferred elsewhere, otherwise we'd have happily gone there x

ScribblingPixie · 21/03/2025 14:44

The government advice map is green for Hammamet and the area around it - ie they are not advising tourists to avoid it. I have travelled right across Tunisia including in retrospect some dodgy areas, and IMO the important thing is to be in an environment that is (and with professional people who are) pro tourist and concerned for your safety and enjoyment. In a decent hotel, you have both of those things.

SamTG · 21/03/2025 14:44

I just came back from Tunisia 3 weeks ago.

We were there for a week, travelling around, both with and without a guide, it was totally fine.
The people were incredibly helpful and patient.

The advice is only about avoiding the border areas and they’re not places anyone would get to accidentally.

Go and have a lovely time!

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 21/03/2025 14:00

My understanding of Tunisia is that you are perfectly safe if you stay in resort.

Well, it is ten years since 38 tourists were gunned down on the beach in Sousse, with the active involvement of a policeman…..

AngelicKaty · 21/03/2025 14:45

@Youagain2025 You haven't f*cked up OP. You're staying in Hammamet on the North-East coast. If you look at the FCO's current travel advice (https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tunisia) you'll see the only real risks are on the Western border with Algeria and the Southern border with Libya.
Go and enjoy your holiday!

Sugargliderwombat · 21/03/2025 14:50

You're fine OP, there are scary warnings online but you'll be fine in a resort. The. Gov website has similar warnings about Germany but noone panics about going to there.

ItGhoul · 21/03/2025 14:52

Youagain2025 · 21/03/2025 14:11

We are going here

You'll be perfectly safe there.

Dery · 21/03/2025 14:54

Tunisia is pretty safe.

Yes, there was a mass shooting there in 2016 but there was a much bigger mass shooting in Paris and there have been terror attacks in London. And let’s not get started on the US where mass shootings are fairly commonplace. I’m guessing you would happily go to Paris, London or NY. I know I would. I live in London.

My elder DD was in Tunisia last June for 3 weeks and loved it and a good friend of mine took her daughter there for a winter break and had a great time. My sister went many moons ago and really enjoyed it. I’ve not been myself yet but have heard very good things about it. Friendly people, lovely beaches and weather, delicious food and also some fantastic historical places to visit. You should have a lovely time.

Echobelly · 21/03/2025 14:58

I'm not aware of any advisory not to go there, I'm sure it'll be fine. Plenty of people holiday safely in countries that have some no-go areas.

I am a single female, 60's, and I travel all over Tunisia. There are a few (very few) areas where it is advised not to travel (and I have accidentally been to one of those - "the road went the wrong way") and they are all a very long way from the main tourist areas. There is nothing to worry about.

Well there was a mass shooting in a beach hotel in Sousse in 2015
There was a bombing in Manchester, others in London, etc, etc. Nowhere in the world is 100% safe, but you can also get run over crossing the road.

@rosydreams I also travel all over Mexico!
