I booked a holiday in tunisa. I have never been abroad before as an adult. I did not know tunisa is not a safe place to go. I didn't even know you could look it up. I just thought that if its not safe that all flights to that area stop . But that's not the case . I tried changing it but they told me I can't because airline operator do not go to the area I want . Its with tunisa airlines so basically it only gos to tunisa? . So i can't go change to a different destination. But unless I pay a load of money I can't cancel either.

Just to add . I do have learning difficulties. Which is probably why I did not realise all of this . I'm so pissed of

I have fucked up holiday

It'll be fine

notacooldad · 21/03/2025 15:01

Me and my friend went to Tunisia last year.
We had a great time. We got the train into Tunis and we also used taxis. Beware of taxis, they charged by the seat. We got caught out and had to pay for 7 spaces!! 😆 live and learn eh?
I know people said there was a shooting there in 2015, but there was a shooting in France, attacks in Austria, Berlin London etc.
Go with an open mind, enjoy the weather and also the beautiful country.

greatfrontage · 21/03/2025 15:01

OP, it looks like you have booked an absolutely lovely holiday. As others have said, there are no problems with the area you are going to, so you don't need to be worried about whether or not your should cancel. I'm really jealous - the resort looks fantastic! You'll have a brilliant time.

Do you have everything else sorted - passports with plenty of time to run on them? Travel insurance?

Crazybaby123 · 21/03/2025 15:01

Youagain2025 · 21/03/2025 14:11

We are going here

This will be lovely. Just stick to the resort and tours that are recommended by the hotel.
Look up travel safety checklists about how to keep your money and passports safe. If toubare going abroad for the first time then this will be a good thing to do whatever country you were going to.
Make sure you have insurance and print outs, a broken wrist can cost thousands for example as medical care will be privately paid for as a tourist, so insurance is important.

Mumsgirls · 21/03/2025 15:02

Went years ago. Same place as you, tormented on the stunning beach by sellers and much too hot. My worry would be the gun attacks on tourists a few years back, but feel sorry for the tourist industry. Personally I would lose the money rather than go there, especially alone. You really would have to stay in the hotel all week if alone. Perhaps I am being over cautious, but depends what your attitude to risk is though. There have been no attacks for years. My family live in Southport, so I suppose these days anywhere can be deadly.

Tgilaura · 21/03/2025 15:02

We have been to Tunisia twice in the last two years, once to Hammamet and once to sousse.
We found it perfectly fine, we went out exploring alone and had no issues. There is a lot of police about but I think hammamet is a pretty touristy area so it reassured us more than anything.
We didnt get any hassle, only the usual trying of vendors to get you to step into their shop - similar to Turkey honestly.
I would go and enjoy it!
Depending on when you ve booked for - if summer months it will be boiling so bear that in mind. 😊

My understanding of Tunisia is that you are perfectly safe if you stay in resort.
Well, it is ten years since 38 tourists were gunned down on the beach in Sousse, with the active involvement of a policeman…..
Would you advice people not yours ho to London Spain, France, Austria Germany etc because of attacks that have happened there? Let's stay at home!

StElse · 21/03/2025 15:08

Oh we went there. It was lovely, fine. Pool a bit chilly.

I don't understand, what's the fuck up? Has some part (flight/hotel) cancelled? Is there a refund?

From your post you've just sent the booking info. It all looks good. What has happened to fuck it up?

PinkFrogss · 21/03/2025 15:08

As others have said if you stay in the resort you’ll be fine, that hotel looks lovely! Bring lots of books and sunscreen and relax around the pool.

thankyounextplease · 21/03/2025 15:09

Totally fine, majority of UK cities more dangerous.

Youagain2025 · 21/03/2025 14:58

They won't it says i one them. On the pic of my op

Why do you pick up on that post instead of all the posts reassuring you that it’s fine?

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 21/03/2025 15:10

@Youagain2025

I'm assuming you've paid in full for the holiday so ignore the advice that says you'll only lose your deposit.

You will be 500kms [Hammamet to Zarzis] by road to the border of an amber area, never mind red.

Unless you planned to hire a car and go touring, you will be fine.

Make sure you have travel insurance. You shouldn't go anywhere without it. Just look at the closures in Heathrow today.

Do buy some anti diarrhoea meds and make sure not to drink the tap water.

Have a lovely time.

notacooldad · 21/03/2025 15:10

I've just remembered the first solo holiday i went on was to Tunisia. I was really stressed at the time and all my worries just melted away. I went with my mum another time and again last year with my friend. The people were nice and chatty when we went exploring.
Sure there's hustlers but I've had that in Morocco, Turkey, Egypt, Jamaica etc.
Have a fantastic time!

I stayed in Hammamet although it was way back in 2004 for my honeymoon but it was safe enough then. There was this cool waterpark nearby but may not be there at all now. We really loved it there moreso than Port El Kantaoui where we went for our second week.

Loub1987 · 21/03/2025 15:19

I’ve been to that hotel and it’s lovely. Unless I’ve missed some recent update, it is in a safe area.

Scirocco · 21/03/2025 15:23

That looks lovely. I'd try not to worry too much. If you're in a safe, touristy area, you're unlikely to have problems. You'll be quite a long way away from amber/red warning areas, as far as I can see.

theDudesmummy · 21/03/2025 15:25

OP, who told you that it would be unsafe?

Tiredofallthis101 · 21/03/2025 15:25

Tunisia is largely safe, don't worry. Just make sure you aren't going to one of the 'advise against all travel' areas. Follow the FCDO travel advice. https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tunisia

squeaver · 21/03/2025 15:26

You have insurance - you would not be able to get insurance if it was unsafe to travel.

You have booked with an ATOL protected firm so, if they go bust, you will be covered.

You are travelling to a part of the country which is a long way from where there are problems.

Go on your holiday.

Doggymummar · 21/03/2025 15:27

I've been to Tunisia over 10 times. Just be careful same as you would in Spain Turkey etc even the tube in London. It's a lovely country with lovely people gorgeous food and lovely beaches and sunshine. I don't know what's spooked you. Did something happen today I haven't seen on the news?

Antonania · 21/03/2025 15:30

latelydaydreams · 21/03/2025 14:33

That text on the Gov website is a bit misleading at first glance. It advises against ALL travel to SOME parts.

if you look at the map underneath large parts are green for travel- just read the advice

This! I have just given myself a small heart attack checking for my holiday too - but the area we are booked for us is in green just like yours is. It's just ALL travel to the red bits that is advised against.

FrenchandSaunders · 21/03/2025 15:36

Why would anyone mention an attack from 10 years ago 🤦‍♀️. All sorts can happen anywhere OP. It’s statistically hugely unlikely you’ll get caught up in anything like that.

Reminds me of one of the London bombings and people putting on Facebook “OMG I walked across that bridge in 1987” …

dairydebris · 21/03/2025 15:41

If by holiday you mean 'I'd like to wander around aimlessly and explore, catch a few buses to a few different cities, maybe head out to the desert on my own a bit' then I'd cancel, I wouldn't do that alone in Tunisia.

But if you just wanted to sit by the hotel pool, enjoy some sunshine, read a book, eat drink and relax I'd still go, it'll be fine.

Hope you have a lovely time!
