I booked a holiday in tunisa. I have never been abroad before as an adult. I did not know tunisa is not a safe place to go. I didn't even know you could look it up. I just thought that if its not safe that all flights to that area stop . But that's not the case . I tried changing it but they told me I can't because airline operator do not go to the area I want . Its with tunisa airlines so basically it only gos to tunisa? . So i can't go change to a different destination. But unless I pay a load of money I can't cancel either.

Just to add . I do have learning difficulties. Which is probably why I did not realise all of this . I'm so pissed of

I have fucked up holiday

A good friend of mine went to Tunisia and was stopped on a road by a man who said if she didn't give him all her belongings / money / jewelry he would rape her. So she was robbed, but not raped.

I wouldn't dream of visiting.

You will be fine in that hotel / resort. And surrounding tourist area.

Do proper official excursions rather than setting off on your own, you’ll have a lovely time 🙂

While I agree Op will be fine in the hotel I would suggest caution in booking trips and even going out and about in resort.
I am pretty well travelled (including other African countries) and Tunisia was the only place I felt unsafe and had attention from men that tipped over into threatening.

To be fair, this can happen anywhere. It happened to me in the town where I live in the UK.

NilByMuff · 21/03/2025 15:49

The oddest thing that happened to me there was some beach seller trying to BUY me for camels 🐫 😂😂

If there are no red warnings for the area you are travelling to, go and enjoy (just avoid enthusiastic men trying to sell you shit)

We are going here

Hammamet isn't unsafe. You'll be fine.

SometimesCalmPerson · 21/03/2025 15:53

Tunisia is a great holiday destination. I have been and had a lovely time, as well as feeling very safe.

Go and enjoy yourself.

My friend was robbed in London. Should we all emigrate now?

im sure it’ll be fine

Nowvoyager99 · 21/03/2025 16:05

Honestly @Youagain2025 please try not to worry.

I am a single old lady and I have stayed in a similar hotel in Tunisia. It was all absolutely fine.

I did an organised trip to a nearby palace which was amazing, and I got a little tourist train to Port El Kantoui which was a charming Mediterranean style marina with great restaurants.

You will have a great time.

Why didn’t she scream her head off and get help? Presumably she wasn’t being stupid enough to wander about in a remote area on her own? Very narrow minded of you to rule out an entire country based on the actions of one person.

OP ignore these scare stories, bad things can happen anywhere in the world. Stay in the tourist areas or on organised trips. Your holiday will be lovely, as agreed by most people who’ve actually been to Tunisia.

You know that happens in UK cities every day, right?

They do that because they know the tourists expect it.

And you can be robbed and raped anywhere in the UK too. Scaremongering post.

Clocloxx · 21/03/2025 16:10

Me and my family went on a holiday in Tunisia it was lovely we went on many day trips, ate the nicest food in little villages up the mountains, took a trip to sahara Desert rode camels, experienced under ground houses, really memorable trip, friendly people, cheap, great to experienced new cultures! We never felt unsafe there

PhilippaGeorgiou · 21/03/2025 16:12

@FrenchandSaunders Reminds me of one of the London bombings and people putting on Facebook “OMG I walked across that bridge in 1987” …

😂In 2015 my friend and I were looking at some news photos and saying "OMG, we were sitting on the third floor balcony of that restaurant last year..." and looking at the rubble which was all that remained of the place after an earthquake levelled it! But tbf I'd go back in a flash - I believe it was all rebuilt. That was Nepal.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 21/03/2025 14:06

Where have you booked to go to? Honestly it's probably fine, it's unlikely you'd have been able to book somewhere through loveholidays in the areas that are advised no travel.

Are you planning a beach holiday and staying in the hotel/resort? If you're not planning to travel around much, again, it's unlikely you'll be in any danger.

I've been to Tunisia many years ago, and it's gorgeous. So in all likelyhood you'll have a fantastic time.

Just be aware it is a Muslim country so modest clothing is expected when out and about. Who are you going with? Alone/partner/DC?

Oh so what would we need to keep covered?

FortyElephants · 21/03/2025 16:12

Why do you think Tunisia isn't safe?

theDudesmummy · 21/03/2025 16:14

Thousands of people every year go on holiday to Cape Town, which is where I was mugged with a knife to my throat, in the car park outside a shopping centre in the middle of the afternoon. Things can happen anywhere you travel to. But if the package companies are booking travel and the FCO is colouring the area green, I would not worry too much, unless you have some additional information? I repeat my query, who told you it was unsafe?

PhilippaGeorgiou · 21/03/2025 16:17

Youagain2025 · 21/03/2025 16:12

Don't go mad - most of them do not wear "Islamic dress". Don't wear your bikini around town. Cropped leggings, skirt, T-shirt is fine. Take long sleeves (to protect from sun) when wondering around. If you are going into a mosque they will provide you with modest cover - but a scarf over your head, long sleeves and covered ankles (long trousers or skirt) are generally acceptable.

Angie1409 · 21/03/2025 16:17

Please don't worry. Like @ohcrikeynotagain said, the tourist areas are perfectly fine. Check the map they sent and you will see that Hammamet is on the east coast and perfectly safe. Just stay in the touristy areas and book organised tours, don't leave the hotel alone and you will be fine.

pinkyredrose · 21/03/2025 16:18

I didn't even know you could look it up.

What do you mean by this? Do you mean you weren't aware that you could research Tunisia on the Internet?

Apreslapluielesoleil · 21/03/2025 16:20

There are areas of every country, every city that are rough, higher crime.
, dodgy in some way.
In the resort you’ll be fine. Have a room safe and lock your passports away, Kerp cash to a minimum and use credit cards.
These are sensible precautions anyone would take on holiday so just relax and have a lovely time. Make sure you have insurance.

You may have missed that OP explained she has learning difficulties…

DaisyChain505 · 21/03/2025 16:25

You’ve booked through a reputable travel agency. They wouldn’t be selling you a holiday to somewhere and unsafe and if world events changed, they would change the booking for you.

Just make sure you have your transportation to the resort sorted, I wouldn’t go off resort unless on planned excursions.

It’s only if you’re outside the hotel that you’re expected to dress modestly and when I went T-shirts and shorts wasn’t an issue.

If you’re having worries give the agency you booked through a call to double check everything with them like how they recommend you get from the airport to the hotel etc if your transport isn’t included.

You’ll be ok :)
