I have fucked up holiday

I booked a holiday in tunisa. I have never been abroad before as an adult. I did not know tunisa is not a safe place to go. I didn't even know you could look it up. I just thought that if its not safe that all flights to that area stop . But that's not the case . I tried changing it but they told me I can't because airline operator do not go to the area I want . Its with tunisa airlines so basically it only gos to tunisa? . So i can't go change to a different destination. But unless I pay a load of money I can't cancel either.

Just to add . I do have learning difficulties. Which is probably why I did not realise all of this . I'm so pissed of

I have never been to church in my life is would probably set on fire 😭. So if I go to the beach I would have to wear leggings and a t-shirt ?

No! If you are going shopping or to a museum or a restaurant, you want to be covered down to above the elbows and below the knees eg T shirt and leggings/capri pants/longer skirt/trousers. You will need a headscarf, long sleeves and a skirt if you are going to a religious site.

CalleOcho · 21/03/2025 17:02

@Youagain2025 OP, look at some of the hotel/resort YouTube vlogs and reviews. I’ve linked one below, hopefully the link works.

You can see other guests and the general dress code.

I promise you, you will be absolutely fine.

It would be very unlikely that you’d need to cover up on the beach. I would imagine it would be a very touristy beach next to the hotel.

To get more of an idea, I would suggest going onto trip advisor and putting your hotel name in. There will be loads of pictures and I bet you can find some of the beach and see what the people in the pics are wearing. There will also be loads of reviews and there’s a Q&A section as well where people who’ve been can help you out.

Namechangean · 21/03/2025 17:05

That resort relies on tourists, they will not be expecting you to be modest. Make sensible choices. But you can wear a swimsuit round the pool and at the private beaches. You will be fine in the resort in normal holiday clothes. Take a light blanket scarf with you so if you find yourself in an area where you it might be respectful to cover up you can wrap it round your shoulders and chest. I’ve been to Tunisia and had no issues. It’s a very tourist friendly destination in tourist areas, if you are worried you can just stick to your resort.

If you go in to the local town just be considerate, don’t go in your bikini etc, wear a dress to cover up, but you don’t need to be covered from head to toe unless your Muslim, as if you are Muslim they may have higher expectations of modesty. But the resorts will sell alcohol etc because they want Europeans to come there on holiday

Tunisia is an absolutely wonderful country and Tunisians are largely pretty relaxed - I know manyyyyyy. You don’t need to worry about what you’re wearing. No need for leggings on the beach. A normal swimsuit. This is a good time of year to go too - it isn’t too hot. Go and have a lovely time.

OP, what has changed your mind between making the booking and now?

I changed my mind pretty fast because I came across something that saud they don't advice travel . I'm quite sure ut was the government site. It did say it was certain areas . But then I'm thinking are them areas an hour away by car . Are they actually that far . Then what's to stop something happening at the hotel/resort don't terrorists aim to kill as many as they can. Then are children safe .

I get where you’re coming from but sadly terrorist attacks happen everywhere, here, France, Tunisia, Sri Lanka… lots of people go to Tunisia, Egypt etc and are perfectly safe

londongirl12 · 21/03/2025 17:12

Op, maybe give us more information. Who are you going with? What has given you concern? Have you paid the holiday in full? When are you going?

i haven’t been, but this website gives you information about the country, especially clothing. https://nickipoststravelstuff.com/know-before-visiting-tunisia/

But things like that can happen here. Look at the Manchester arena bombing.

Scirocco · 21/03/2025 17:13

@Youagain2025 honestly, you will likely be fine there. It's a lovely resort in a safe area. You've had some good advice about clothing too. What is it that's causing you to feel like you want to cancel? Is there anyone going with you who could go through things with you to reassure you?

You do, of course, have the option to cancel if you decide you don't want to go, but you would still need to pay what's owed for a cancellation.

Youagain2025 · 21/03/2025 17:14

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 21/03/2025 16:57

Why?

Literally everyone apart from one or two posters have told you that it’s fine. What was the point in posting if you ignore all the comments?

I haven't said im ignoring all comments. I just said I saw that abd replied. When I got home I went back to page 1 and started reading.

If you were persuaded by the government (FCO) site that some parts of Tunisia can be unsafe, then you should also be reassured by the fact that the area you are going to is classified as safe by the same site. The package companies also risk assess all their sites and they have no interest in sending their customers to unsafe places, that would be terrible publicity for them. Yes, things can happen anywhere, but no-one can fully remove that chance, whether you are in the UK or anywhere else.

Youagain2025 · 21/03/2025 17:18

KnickerFolder · 21/03/2025 16:50

@Youagain2025 The US government equivalent of the FCO travel advice website rates Tunisia and the UK at the same level for risks, if that helps put it into perspective? You can get some lovely tiles or pottery for your colourful home! 😂

Beach wear is fine in the resort. You can wear a normal swimsuit, shorts and vest top. If you are sightseeing, it’s best to keep arms and legs covered (long sleeves/trousers/long skirts) but short sleeves and capri pants/below the knee skirts are okay. No vest tops or shorts or bare shoulders. If you are visiting religious sites, you need long sleeves, a long skirt and a scarf to cover your hair.

Don’t stress! It will be fine.

Edited

The clothes thing is still confusing me . I did feel a bit better now I know that uk is the same level of danger to tunisa though.

Cheesandcrackers · 21/03/2025 17:19

Stay in the resort, pack sunscreen and try to drink bottled water. You'll be booking next year's holiday there before u know it.

Here's a map of Tunisia. Hammamet is in the top right area.

To travel from Hammamet to Thala (in the orange bit on the left) by car would take a bit over 4 hours.

Nobody can ever promise complete safety anywhere, but this looks like a pretty safe resort. Lots of positive reviews and feedback online, too.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 21/03/2025 17:22

You will be fine, the holiday companies would not sell holidays if it were that dangerous.

As for clothing - whilst you are in the resort you are fine and I think you may stay all the time in the resort anyway ?

but just be respectful if you do go out of the resort i.e. don't wear a bikini to go to shops.

you do not need to be fully covered up as long as you are not visiting any places of worship - as that would be disrespectful if wearing a bikini.

theDudesmummy · 21/03/2025 17:24

Re the clothing, it's pretty simple: As people said:
By the pool or beach: normal holiday clothes eg swimsuit, t-shirt, shorts
Inside the hotel/ resort restaurants: t-shirt and shorts or short sundress
Outside of the resort: skirt below knee, shirt below elbows
Visiting religious sites: Take a scarf for your head

The risk of the UK having a terror attack at the moment is Substantial according to the Home Office....

Yeah I’m not surprised you can’t even go on the tube these days without someone trying to rob your phone…….

Youagain2025 · 21/03/2025 17:27

KnickerFolder · 21/03/2025 16:57

I would add, it is better not to wear shorts or a vest top in the hotel restaurant. I guess cover up in the restaurant in a suitable for work way. You wouldn’t be showing lots of cleavage or your midriff or wear shorts to work in (most offices).

This has really put me off now . I wish I had known all this before. I mean i don't want to be panicking about what I can and can't wear whilst eating. And I feel like I would have to get changed every time we want to eat . I wanted to travel light to. I was just expecting . Vest tops /t shirts / shorts . Type thing . I'm thinking if I was say near the pool in shorts and a top I would then have to go get changed just to eat lunch/dinner . It just feels like hassle.

I'm so confused. So if I'm litterly just staying in the resort by the pool. And maybe go to the beach . Can I wear shorts and top ? Do I (have) to wear long sleeves? Can I wear a basic type swim suit . Do I have to keep shoulder's covered . Do I have to be careful if there's a small amount of cleverage on show or anything like that .

Around the hotel and beach you can wear exactly what you want- shorts and tops and bikinis and swim suits are fine. you don't need to wear long sleeves unless going into a mosque.
I probably wouldn't do a thong swimsuit or go topless on the beach or around the pool, but some people may. You'll be absolutely fine.
It won't be boiling hot at this time of the year, but will be pleasantly warm. It gets dark suddenly early evening, and you may need a light cardigan/ jacket in the evening.
Enjoy, and stop worrying!

Just ignore all these comments you can wear what you want, we went donkeys years ago and you could wear what you want and my mum would sunbath bloody topless so just ignore these ott comments, you’ll be fine unless you’re wandering around naked……..

Well there was a mass shooting in a beach hotel in Sousse in 2015
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Sousse_attacks
but I would imagine that would have served to make the authorities tighten up security. Personally I wouldn’t fancy a holiday where you’re advised not to leave the compound but each to his own. I think you’ll just have to make the best of it.

well that's really helpful and will surely put the OP's mind at rest. ffs

Anything can happen anywhere. There are no gov restrictions to places where TUI go. Just exercise caution, stay on resort or take an organised trip. Get a proper transfer. I@ve been to loads of places where people say 'omg you're not going there are you.' but seriously, things happen in spain too and in the UK

KellySeveride · 21/03/2025 17:31

For the love of all things shiny….you don’t need to cover up if you leave the hotel. If you haven’t been to Tunisia recently please don’t make this comment.

Normal hot weather wear of shorts and tops are perfectly accepted wandering around the towns.

Please don’t worry. You are going to a very touristy area. There will be lots of people all around you wearing normal holiday clothes.

I’m sure you weren’t planning on going into a restaurant or walking around the shops in your bikini anyway. Normal hot weather holiday clothes will be just fine.

You will feel safe and have a lovely time in the sun. Exactly what you were expecting.

I know it’s scary going somewhere new for the first time but please don’t worry.

I wouldn’t write this if I thought you had anything to worry about at all.
