The further cuts are, like the originally announced cuts, nothing to do with principle or decency. They’re to save money because the economy is in deep shit.

No shit Sherlock

This is Whatley's statement:

"This is a now or never chance to seize the moment, a now or never for millions of people who will otherwise be signed off for what could end up being a lifetime on benefits, but this announcement today leaves me with more questions than answers.

How many people will this help back into work? By when? Surely we haven’t been waiting eight months just for another green paper? Where is the fit note reform, crucial to stem the flow of people onto benefits? Where is the action on people being signed off sick for the everyday ups and downs of life?

Why is she only planning to save £5bn when the bill is forecast to rise to over £100bn?

Fundamentally, this is too little, too late. The fact is £5bn just doesn’t cut it. With a bill so big, going up so fast, she needed to be tougher. She should be saying no more hard working taxpayers funding the family next door not to work. No more free top of the range cars for people who don’t need them"

That's a shocking statement. 'Top of the range cars' how dare she say that.

Lovely photos and thanks again for your lovely wishes.

My sister and brother went to the grave today and sent pictures. The sun was shining and the flowers beautiful, my mum is buried in Northern Ireland.

My day has gone so well and beautiful and thoughtful gifts from my three fabulous children. Not feeling so upset today. Much love to all.

Are top range cars the new flat screen tv's?

Yes , it seems so.

Silly, ethical (social conscience washing, if you will) Audi offering up their cars for Motability schemes. What absolute bastards.

I'm surprised she forgot to mention the goat for full ignorance points.

DuncinToffee · 30/03/2025 15:40

You don't see many range rovers, bmw's or Mercedes' in the blue badge bays at our local supermarkets.

P&c bays on the other hand....

Why the caring, sharing tripe from Starmer, Reeves and Kendall then?

Can we conclude that everything Labour says is a pack of lies? Including everything they said when in opposition?

After all, if they can’t come clean about welfare cuts, imagine what lies they’d feel able to tell about everything else.

DuncinToffee · 30/03/2025 15:45

I am not defending Labour, I am agreeing that the economy is in deep shit.

Tories and Reform are not the answer, maybe Lib Dems?

PickAChew · 30/03/2025 15:47

I think, to be fair, most of us are wondering the same, ourselves, @Rummly but we are also wondering if Labour can't be relied upon to look after some of the most vulnerable people in society then who can?

placemats · 30/03/2025 15:48

Actually @Rummly you keep this up. I was close to cancelling my membership but your posts have inspired me to stay and to put in an application for councillor elections. Thank you.

PandoraSox · 30/03/2025 15:50

I an certainly not defending Labour. They are basically repeating austerity. It is madness.

As a left wing person I am now politically homeless. The choice is between Red Tories, hard right Tories and far right Tories.

I knew when my pencil hovered over the Labour tick box that this was a risk, but I really hoped it wasn't going to happen.

Excellent stuff. The Tory Party is the natural home of good, clever people like the regulars on this thread. You’ll do well in the party, I’ve no doubt.

I am sure you appreciate the welfare system is available and you won't be left destitute then

I do hope so.

It's counter intuitive, but the best way to get a party to move in the direction you want is not to vote for it. That's the only way to focus the leadership. This is why anyone who simply votes by rosette is a tad dim. They know now what they do.

Labour are free to travel down this road. But - like the Tories before them - they will end up shaking off supporters on the cobblestones of principle.

Maybe by 2028½ the LibDems can be reconsidered as a credible alternative.

My voting preferences are whatever keeps the Tories out (which is a reckoning that Reform will continue to be like an alt-Right SDP*). So it's no skin off my nose to vote Green, LD, or Labour.

Since agenda have been mentioned 😀I've just sorted out some clothes for charity prompted by making sure I have some decent rags for tomorrow as I'm off on a site visit which is where I will meet my new bosses in person. Working from home on net zero technology won't make me too many friends here, I fear 😫. But someone has to do it. If just to annoy Elon Musk 😎. After that it will be dinner, TV and an early night.

Gentle humour not your thing?

It must be exhausting being so touchy and aggressive all the time.

BIossomtoes · 30/03/2025 16:19

because the OBR didn’t agree with the extent of savings that Labour has trumpeted a few days before.

That isn’t true, is it? The additional rise was because of Trump’s announcement of increasing tariffs to 25%. According to all the news and commentary I’ve read and heard anyway.

It has to be funny to count as humour. Following it by a descent into insults doesn't help convince anyone it was humour.

I’d say that none of that applies to me.

But assuming it does, did BIWI insult me? And if so, whose insults were the more aggressive?

I didn’t much care for the commentary on regular posters’ behaviour that some newer posters made some pages back. But I think you’re beginning to bear those posters out.

Llttledrummergirl · 30/03/2025 16:37

My agenda today so far has been to pack up and leave the holiday home we spent the weekend in, visit a cider farm and drive home.
I've got a load of washing in the machine, have called dm to say happy mothers day, and am now watching football.

I know a couple of Tory councillors who do great work locally. Kind and helpful with local matters.

Unlike you.

That’s not what I’ve been seeing.

And, anyway, Trump’s actions were known or, at the very least, expected for a long time.

Reeves’s infamous ‘headroom’ is dictated by the official figures. Including the OBR’s. She cut a further £500m from benefits to stop the ceiling falling on her. No other reason.

I am joining ilovesooty's agenda at the moment, not quite tag teaming as I am supporting the opposition Grin
