I have been on MN for 15 years or so and only just realised via a post in Active Threads, that there is a Surrogacy board on Mumsnet??

I only read a couple of the discussions there, along the lines of can I buy my baby abroad? has anyone else had a baby via Surrogacy?? so, looks to be a chat board to SUPPORT people try to remove babies from their mothers using cash.

huh?? on Mumsnet?

My posts have been centred around the thread topic that it should be banned and it's a horrid practice. I've had that many replies that it's hard to remember the ins and outs of all posters but I'm basically for surrogacy and most replies to me have been people against it.

Why would I not have sympathy for any human being who might have suffered some form of physical or mental pain. You could argue anything in life can sometimes go wrong. So I'm not wanting to nit pik around that because its silly.

Women being coerced, trafficked and financially abused is NOT ‘not picking’ and is not ‘silly’.

Someone I know had an early menopause. cancer and the chemo gave her the extra "gift" of an early menopause. They both wanted a child that reflected their mixed racial heritage.

You'd deny them that because you disapprove? Really?

I would deny someone that if it was my choice. Just because you want a baby doesn’t mean that you’re entitled to one. And if the hand you’re dealt means it’s not possible, unfortunate as it may be, it doesn’t give you the right to buy access to someone’s body to create a baby for you.

nevertuesday · 20/03/2025 12:49

for clarity, I 100% want Surrogacy to be banned. it is the trafficking of babies, there is no justification for it

Well in this country it does as it's legal. Plenty women in politics now so let's just wait and see if that ever changes.

Anchorage hasn't claimed to be the product of a surrogate pregnancy unless I've missed something. There was a hypothetical post above saying 'if my parents told me they used a surrogate' or something like that.

And the fact she has been going along with pp’s assumption rather than correcting it tells you how genuine she (or he) is on here about any of it.
Clearly getting something out of posting so frequently though.

You’re correct, that’s my bad, I read it incorrectly.

However all that has done has lost her the modicum of respect I had for her. Who goes along with the pretence they are the child of surrogacy?! Bizarre.

Precisely, it’s disingenuous and weird.

I didnt go along with anything as I've got quite a lot of points and posts to reply to. I think it 'funny' that you would assume that because I'm for something that must mean I'm for it simply because it benefitted me. Shows how wrong you are about my motives.

You and I were engaged in conversation for a while there with no other posts. You either deliberately neglected to correct me, twice, or you didn’t read what I was saying properly and simply responded with your usual disinterest in other people’s views.

Either way, it reveals a lot about you.

It's not quite as Agatha Christie as you are making out I'm afraid. If I was trying to hide anything I wouldn't have put a post up that basically says I'm not a child of surrogacy. The person who had to point that out to you I liked their comment indicating to them I'm pleased they noticed.

Not all relationships are as transactional as you appear to believe. Someone in my friends family donated an egg out of the goodness of their heart. Wanted nothing in return, except that the family member be content and happy.

It gives you a legal channel to access a woman’s body for your own gain. It doesn’t give you the moral right just because you want a baby.

It’s a horrific practice and I wish it was banned worldwide.

Egg donation is another issue which is not exactly the same as surrogacy. It doesn’t involve ripping a newborn from its mother and handing it over to strangers. Which is barbaric.

Edited to add: it’s not about the adults in these situations. It’s the baby that should be advocated for.

Well no ripping is involved. The adults involved generally do want the best for the baby. The intended parents will want the surrogate to be as healthy as possible through pregnancy and then they will love and care for the child they have put so much effort into trying to have.

TheaBrandt1 · 20/03/2025 15:45

What’s your agenda Anchorage? Odd to see a woman so intransigent and unable to see or to even acknowledge the issues here. I can only assume you have a financial interest in surrogacy.

I think the people without compassion are more likely to be the ones who look at surrogacy as something people would only want to do for money. Your obviously not able to see past that. Well at the very start of the thread it was about working out why OP was raging about it, then over the last 24 hours its turned into replying to endless responses to my posts.

We don't know that Anchorage is female. We do know that Anchorage appears to have a touching faith in human nature. I don't.

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 20/03/2025 16:17

I sort of agree OP, but I do think there’s a huge difference between someone carrying a child for a family member or friend, and commercial surrogacy where the baby has no contact with its birth mother.

If possible. There are always exceptions, but ordering a baby knowing that it will be removed from its gestational mother and handed to strangers is abhorrent.

Your earlier post saying that “the adults involved generally do want the best for the baby” is flawed as they have started a process in their own self interest which includes a cruel and unnatural start for the baby.

I'm female. Nobody here has any way of verifying that, of course, but my posting history is pretty consistent.
